The senior bowl measurements, practices and game thread.

He's starting to fall out of the top ten at NFL draft sites. I never said he sucked, I just don't see the hype. I think people overrate him based on media hype. I'm conformable in my own evaluation and prefer to be alone, as it will make the hindsight sweeter. If by chance I'm wrong and Oliver turns out to be a pro bowl player it will show I can go out on a limb.

Oliver is an undersized DT who is average at best as a pass rusher. What NFL team wants that? His sacks this year can against two very bad teams. And if he plays at 275 pounds as the Houston staff says he did, good luck vs 315 pound NFL Guards and Centers. But he's not in any senior bowl or bowl games, so let's leave him out if this thread from here on in.

I said Troy wasn't very good as a rookie. The big head comment was factually and really had to do it is a bigger part of his stature than most. My point, if I can remember way back was he's a shorter guy, and his shoulders for a guy 5'10" tall are below most others of the same height. Something close to that. I never called him a bust, and by the way, loved the Ike Taylor pick. The rookies I called a bust was Jarvis Jones and Ziggy Hood. 2 for 2 there.

Cool it man. I said he’s not in the senior bowl or any bowl game for that matter.

Also stop lying. I’ve seen him play far you’re giving me credit for.

We all saw Ed get emotional when they asked him to take off the jacket and cry about things later. I actually preferred your comments about that small and slow receiver trying to stay on the Steelers roster. At least that was sort of funny. I didn’t think much of him and neither did the Steelers.

Stop! You told us multiple times he’s playing nose tackle. I see him as a 4-3 DT only. I have said before it’s too bad Oliver won’t play in any of the college all star games. I never said he’s skipping the senior bowl. Man you have a Lying issue.

I did say he bolted from his bowl game coming back from the injury after playing.

Houston’s measurements and weights will be embarrassing!

What do you think of those recent mock drafts :). Oliver not in the top ten!

so two posts here have you saying he is not going to any senior bowls...again how could a true Junior go to those?

Find any post where I say Oliver will be a NT on the next level. All I have ever posted is that he played NT at UH...which he did. You are not some great prognosticator, almost everything written about him says he would likely be a 3 technique on the NFL level.

Call me a liar again without posting proof of it and you will be gone for a while.

Mocks right now don't mean ****. Oliver has slipped a bit due to his missing 4 games this season. But if his measurements are roughly what Aaron Donald's were at the combine, and he shows his athletic ability during the drills, he will start to move back up again.

There are still plenty of mocks out there with him going between 5 and 10...so what do you think of those.....it is not like in the one's you cherry pick show him falling to the bottom of the first.

and just remember, YOU are the one who brought Oliver into this discussion....

Isaiah Johnson, Houston Actual height 6'2" tall as measured at the senior bowl.

Houston Cougars listed height. They say 6'4" tall!

Sorry, Coolie, fudge an inch or 5 pounds, but this one is pretty bad. Any my does he have small hands :) Having said that I want to see Johnson in the practices and game. How much will Ed Oliver shrink in height and weight? Time will tell, no what he's 6'3" tall 290 pounds as Houston lists.

yeah, I've already posted Johnson's weigh-in info....

6'2" with his speed is still a good size corner and arms at 33 5/8ths is not bad

I've said the kid is kind of raw in DB skills. He has good hips but needs to work on his footwork.

You mentioned he was playing nose tackle plenty of times. Possibility to mitigate that he's such a pedestrian type of pass rusher. My retort was he was on plenty of four-man lines and had many chances to rush the passer.

Aaron Donald was far more productive in college and a man among boys at the senior bowl. He's also much stronger than Oliver. And he was picked 13th overall.

I had to chuckle about these " Houston Measurements " I. Joshnon shrunk nearly two full inches from what their program listed him as. I know their competition isn't very good, but to fudge the basic numbers to the degree they are...

I mentioned he played NT in college...I never stated he would play NT in the NFL as you claimed. As I have pointed out numerous times, the 4 man lines you report were when a LB moved up on the LOS but Oliver remained at NT in most of those sets this past season. They had multiple injuries to DL players and very rarely went to a true 4 man line.

and I really don't care one way or another about the measurements listed on UH's site...

Trace McSorley measured in at 6 ft 2/8, close to Mayfield’s size and 9 1/4 hands which is acceptable. Will be interesting if he does drills at other positions. With those measurements though, I think he’ll stay at QB. He will likely be impressive in interviews and it only takes 1 team doing RPO to like him.

Clemson WR Hunter Renfro hand measured only 7 3/4. That’s tiny. At 5’10 and 175 he better run under 4.5 or show elite quickness in 3 cone or he probably won’t get drafted.

Since I have a good memory and reading comprehension, I do remember Coolie stating that if Oliver played at a large school like Alabama, he would have been a 3 tech or DE. This isn't revisionist fake news...

Coolie, I know Oliver has the speed and hands, do you think he could make the transition to OLB in a 3-4 D?

I think he would give it a hell of a shot. He is very athletic for a DL, but that would be a huge change. I am curious what his 40 time will be. He chased down plays way down field several times at UH...

That's why I thought that Coolie. If he dropped some weight, you're talking about a guy with his leverage, and his hands, rushing the passer against tackles instead of G/Cs. Coming out of college, I'd think he'd have the club, and the rip down off of the edge, and he's already fast at his weight. Drop another 20lbs and look out!

5. Isaiah Johnson, CB, Houston
I wasn’t able to get Johnson in the interviews, and I’m sorry about that: interesting player who swapped to corner late in his Houston career and has a great outlook on life.

But that said, we’re here to watch ’em ball, and Johnson balled today. He locked up Deebo Samuel and David Sills V — two of the best receivers on his South squad — with ease. Length, foot speed, and long speed: Johnson has everything you like to see on film to leave in a Cover 3 outside zone and let him run with wideouts. He fits that Seattle mold to a T.

34″ arms’ll do that, as well as a 6-foot-2 build at over 200 pounds. I was told the Senior Bowl staff expects him to run in the 4.4s, which is absolutely flying for a dude his size. I’m locked in Johnson as my favorite Day 2 corner prospect.

UH had Oliver tasked with covering Mixon out in the flat when they faced each other but that is the only time I remember them using him like that. I think it would be a good challenge for the kid with the right coach....

Eh, these threads carry a bit of entertainment value, so I can deal. Truly though, I get what you are saying.

Senior bowl standouts, practice #1

I've seen about half of practice day #1. Not much stand out on the DB side :), but I did see a few good edge guys and LBs.

Edge : Montez Sweat

Sweat flashed power in his hands, agility, and speed as a pass rusher. I liked his power and effort more so than his pure speed. He has improved his stock already and should be a mid to late first round pick. If the value for ILB and CB doesn't make sense at pick #20, the Steelers could consider a player like Sweat in round one to replace a very mediocre Bud Dupree.

https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/montez-sweat-1.html

LB/Nickle: Terrill Hanks Hanks delivered a fantastic hit, standing up and stopping running back near the hole. Hanks has been impressive statistically in pass coverage. He showed he can hit and tackle well. If he runs well, I think he can make a 3 down ILB. Hanks could be a day two pick. I like what I saw so far.

https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/terrill-hanks-1.html

WR Renfro: As expected Renfo runs crips route and shows fine hands. He's a little undersized, but teams with an accurate QB with rythm like passing will like him a lot. While his upside isn't high, I can see him being a plug and play type for a ## or #4 WR.

Rock was burned in practice, I think it was Deebo. Anyways the SB will be a good watch to see who has progressed or struggling once the pads are on...

Check back in a year. Whoever showed out as a rookie will be the "guy" Coach loved.

Okay, let's check back a few years.

I wasn't a fan of the Dupree pick. He has just been okay.

I did not like the Burns pick, I wanted the trade down ( given the Steelers and extra 3rd ) and would have selected PRO BOWL CB X Howard. Howard had seven interceptions this year. We could use that; meanwhile Burns was benched.

I was perhaps TJ Watt/s greatest advocate and want him in round one. He's in the Pro Bowl.

In the last draft, I wanted Saftey J. Reid in round one, and he easily outperformed Edmunds as a rookie at the same position. For round two I like LB Baker, and he was much better than a disappointing Washington.

So Kev, there you have it. Sure I'll miss some too, but you wanted to see the guys I liked.
