With the 102nd overall pick, the Pittsburgh Steelers select OLB Alex Highsmith

Asked and answered ....

Just got to your post.

20 reps. Certainly well below average, wouldn't you say? Only 5 less than "tiny" Sutton Smith.

Sooooo, you didn't really want the injury and bench press information?

Sooooo, you evidently think 20 reps is impressive? For a guy who'll be taking on skilled 320 pound NFL lineman on a regular basis?

And yet, exactly the same amount of reps as Gross-Matos. Two more than Uche. So, Yetur and Josh must be pretty weak too.

You're absolutely right ... Glad we didn't get Yetur or Uche too!

Both TJ Watt and Von Miller only did 21 reps, Khalil Mack 23. I’d say they proved they were plenty strong enough from day 1 of their careers, wouldn’t you?

Anthony Barr 19 reps named to pro bowl 4 times in a six year career. Most of these edge rushers are tall guys with long arms and the bench press isn’t their strength. Bench press proves little in the grand scheme of things in regards to functional strength in a football player. If they’re doing 10 reps maybe you got something to ***** about but 20 is fine.

TJ Watt says hello.

Forget it, if the guy did 30 reps he'd probably say that they were dummy weights like the cousin did to Doug in "The King of Queens". He first was too embarrassed to bench for the combine apparently (before he did any research about perhaps why he didn't) -- and then when he finds out he does, it's not good enough.

And yeah, just maybe a 22 year-old just entering the NFL needs to fill out and develop some more strength, novel ******* concept.

Holy ****, would you look at this. These are the combine measurements/results for two of our OLBs:

#1

HT: 6'4" WT: 252 LBS
POSITION: OLB
ARM LENGTH: 33 1/8"

40 YARD DASH: 4.69 SEC
BENCH PRESS: 21 REPS
VERTICAL JUMP: 37.0 INCH
BROAD JUMP: 128.0 INCH
3 CONE DRILL: 6.79 SEC
20 YARD SHUTTLE: 4.13 SEC

#2

HT: 6'3" WT: 250 LBS
POSITION: OLB
ARM LENGTH: 33 1/8"

40 YARD DASH: 4.70 SEC
BENCH PRESS: DNP (video sent to teams shows 20 reps)
VERTICAL JUMP: 33.0 INCH
BROAD JUMP: 125.0 INCH
3 CONE DRILL: 7.32 SEC
20 YARD SHUTTLE: 4.31 SEC

#1 is Pro-Bowler and beast TJ Watt. #2 is Alex Highsmith. But OMG he he he's the reincarnation of Sutton Smith! *the sky is falling*

Get the **** outta here.

And this guy and Sutton Smith are not even similar physically:

Alex Highsmith -- 6'3" 250 lbs 33 1/8" arms (per his NFL.com draft profile)

Sutton Smith -- 6'0" 233 lbs 30 3/4" arms (per his NFL.com draft profile)
Which was the knock on Sutton his size hurt him. His lack of arm length hurt him. Steelers still took a look but the concern was there. The difference between drafting one prospect in the 3rd and one much later. Just a bad comparison not all "tweener' pass rushers are the same that right there was a silly concept.

I picked Highsmith in several of my mocks but not in the 3rd round. I think I had him in the 4th round. What sucks about this year is there will be no OTA's, no mini-camp, probably no camp and probably no pre-season games. So, what are teams going to do with players that need to develop? Hopefully, the league will make practice squads off limits this year so teams can put their players there without worrying about losing someone they just drafted but have no idea if he can play in the league.

Like with Claypool, I would have looked at another position, but do not have an issue with the player.

Late 3rd is about when you start more looking at tools and projections than refined products, and Highsmith has the tools.

It's not like we're talking Jarvis Jones with a safety build and turtle-like speed.

Welcome to the PITTSBURGH STEELERS Mr. Highsmith, may your field presence be known and best of your abilities represent the team both on and off the field of play.

Salute the nation

Wow, how this guy saw it. Complete opposite from our view:

2nd Round, No. 49 overall | Chase Claypool, WR, Notre Dame

Instant grade: B

Analysis: Claypool is 6-foot-4 and ran a 4.42 40 in the combine, which is impressive. Notre Dame wasn't creative in using him; he ran a lot of streaks, which is OK for a guy of his size and speed? We'll see if he can use the rest of the route tree in Pittsburgh.

3rd Round, No. 102 overall (compensatory) | Alex Highsmith, OLB, Charlotte

Instant grade: A-minus

Analysis: Highsmith needs to add weight, but he is a quick player who knows where the ball is. A plus pass rusher.

You sir, are either drunk, have anger issues or didn't receive enough hugs as a child. This amount of rage about a draft pick is alarming. Are you OK? Is the lock down/social distancing thing breaking you? They have hotlines that can help.

He needs a hug and some fresh air.

should of went OL now i want 2 big uglies in rnd 4 G bredeson Simpson/ Biadez and OT Bartch if we get 1 then take Easton or Fromm.
and trade the rnd 6 ad 7 and 1 next years pick to move up and get another OT Charles LSU

Ithink they are sold on Solu in rnd 6 thus why not taking the bpa at 49 JK

Wow, Highsmith might be the new Archer! Guys this is a "3rd" (more like 4th) round pick. Looking at the draft last night this is what I think happened. Tanner Muse is our guy and he is just fallling right in our laps and we are happy and then BAM Raiders take him. Steelers panick as always and grab the next guy they wanted at #124 which is Alex Highsmith. He is not that big of a reach. CBS has him ranked #140, thedraftnetwork had him rated #98, Ryan Wilson big board #125, drafttek had him at #123, bleacher report does things differently and ranked him a bottom of the third round pick. SO I guess what I am saying definitely did not get great value but people who think he was lasting to the 6th round need to get a grip as well. We got average value in my opinion.

Here's the film I watched on Highsmith. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnP6iynRTjg&t

He holds his own and has multiple QB pressures, a sack (irnoically one of the better times being blocked), fumble recovery and a tackle for loss. He did not dominate but he showed he deserved to be on the field with the likes of a national champion contender. I feel he will take Chicks place on special teams and backs up both Bud and Watt eventually. I think we won't be happy this year because I don't think he gets a hat on Sunday right away. 2021 is when I feel he starts contributing.

Here are his plays against #1 Clemson. Looks pretty good to me. He has more than one move and VERY GOOD get off at the snap. Seems Clemson went away from his side quit often as well. He let one run get by him and was swallowed up another play but over-all I like what I see.
