Are Pouncey and DeCastro Mediocre?

I agree Tape. These guys are getting paid like Dawson and Faneca, but I don't think they are on the same level. It's great that Ben has time to throw, but OL paid that high should be able to run and pass block equally well.

Getting sick of Pouncey getting hurt all of the time. We had Velasco a while back, I would have signed him (he would have been dirt cheap) and gotten rid of china doll pouncey. Decastro can leave as well.

When you see 53 and 66 down field blocking on plays you know those two are the main dogs on the line. I seem to always spot them upfield blocking on long plays. This ain't the old OL we used to ***** about Ben getting killed with. This OL keeps Ben upright and we've got a RB who can put 100 yards up every week. I'm not sure what else we can ask of them. Problem with the OL is there are many on this board who feel like we shouldn't be paying huge contracts out at those positions. Ultimately when you have a franchise QB you have a responsibility to take the best care of him as possible so he doesn't get beat to **** every week. Go see Andrew Luck this year if you want to see what that looks like.

I think this OL is a lot better at pass blocking than they are run blocking. Solid at run blocking but not dominate by any means.

Pouncey and Decastro have the best feet and speed in the game. We went for a fast, athletic line. Not a big, road grading line. Pouncey and Decastro are pulling quickly and getting 10-20 yards downfield on blocks. No other tandem on Oline in the league can do that. We are no longer 3yds and a cloud of dust. We are an active pulling, athletic line.

Also the idea that Pouncey is soft is played out. Dude hasn't missed a game this season. Not even the same week he had surgery on his snapping thumb to repair it. Pouncey is a freakin monster.

thats my point is that the steelers run game depends on the defense being afraid of the pass and not the blocking. With so much invested, I don't think it's too much to ask that our highly paid interior can open holes without help.

Dallas played half the year without Dez Bryant. They were rolling out Terence Williams, Cole Beasley and Witten, coupled with a rookie QB. Every defense stacked the box to stuff the run and the cowboy OL is making holes anyway. That's what real impact players are supposed to do. Most Cowboy runs are right up the gut.

Dallas reinvented the run game in the early 90's and it seems like it may have done it again.

It's a copy cat league and everyone has been taking the Patriots lead in using the pass to set up the run. Dallas seems to be going against the grain.

Amen. Combined their cap number is what for 2017? Try $22,000,000.00 Wouldn't you rather spend the money on more impact positons?

Pouncey is not Dawson, and DeCastro is No Faneca.

Dallas drafted very well. You can't replicate that. Nor can you replace the Patirots coaching ( and cheating )

That would fix everything! I understand Velasco is not playing because he is waiting for the 5 years to expire for his HOF nomination.

Who have the Steelers lost because they signed Pouncey and DeCastro? I hope we aren't playing Madden GM and pretending they'd go out and sign a bunch of big money free agents instead.

I'll say, when Pouncey is healthy. He is damn good. I think he may be the best Olineman the Steelers have at the moment. As a fan I still feel DeCastro can get better. I guess just cause the #66, I hold him up to a perform like Faneca standard

Just curious.....what were their salaries ranked at their respective positions during the prime of their careers? What are 53 and 66 salaries ranked at?

You are comparing two current players to one, probably two (come February) HOF's. Of which both only played 3 years together in their 13 year careers. A little premature in your assessment you think?

They are both above average but they are not elite. I don't want to lose either of them.

But we're paying them as if they are elite. That's how you get in trouble with the cap, paying good players like elite players.

Some interesting stuff here. Steelers are 7th in spending on the OL. over half of the OL spending is on Center and LG.

I would think our OL is easily a top 7 line. Pouncy is second highest cap hit for Center (brother is 3rd btw) while De Castro is 13th for Guards. I think DeCastro is definitely in the top 13 of guards in the game. Pouncy may not be the second best Center, but I'd say to 7 or 8.

Dallas is going to have to pay their guys or try to find new ones while picking later in each round.

We are 20th in DL and 29th in Secondary. 3rd for LB, but 1/2 of that is Timmon's 2016 Cap hit that goes away next year.

Pouncey has 1 penalty and ZERO sacks allowed this season .

We spend years on a iffy O-line, get a good one, and some want to dismantle it. lulz go figure.

No peeps we fortify other areas of the team that is a weakness (OLB.ILB,WR) and keep other areas in tact.

We are trying to improve not decline.

But they are probably closer to them than any other lineman we've ever had. And that ain't bad.

The site I linked says ~$15.7m.

However, I would suggest that keeping Ben upright as his career winds down IS an impact, although, not a splashy one.

The question is, I think, rather than by position, is how much does it cost to put together a good OL, and, just as importantly, to keep them together? What would you consider a "reasonable" price for that? Seems like we have a good product on the OL with some decent depth (although injuries to both Backup Centers has hurt that).

Presumably, Dallas will need to pay through the nose to keep their OL together when contracts come up (still on rookie contracts?) all while having to pay through the nose to keep Dak and Elliott.

Sorry, the page hadn't updated when I changed it to 2017. $22m is correct.

puts us 3rd in OL spending for 2017, btw.

if you look at that page and change the year to 2017 while on the team list, then click on a team to see the individuals, it defaults back to 2016.

Pouncey has a bad track record with injures. did velasco do just as good as pouncey, yes. was velasco cheaper than pouncey? yes. was velasco hurt everytime u turn around? no

Sorry, I don't remember Velasco getting 10yards down field to block, pulling effectively, or allowing zero sacks. Pouncey returned to play this year, the same week he had surgery. No other Steeler has had surgery and returned the same week. Especially since it was on his snapping thumb, he is dealing with a lot of pain each time he snaps.

If Velasco was so great, he should have been a probowler for another team right? I mean that's all Pouncey does is make pro bowls. Velasco couldn't stay healthy and only started 8 games in 2 years before he was out of the league. Heck your memory must be fading, because Velasco couldn't even make it through the season he started after Pouncey went down. He got injured and joined Pouncey in IR...

2010=missed superbowl due to injury
2011-missed playoffs
2013-out whole season
2014= signed a gigantic contract (despite those injuries) and played the whole season. Making big 10 yard blocks down the field
2015= oh no...out whole season because he got hit by a Dix
2016= doing good so far...hope you don't crap out for the playoffs...if we get there.

So you are wanting to pay big time money to a guy that is hurt most of the time and one in while does his job by making 10 yard blocks and allowing zero sacks? Not me. I bet you are the guy that is telling tomlin to keep Golson on the payroll. If pouncey would have played for the Pats, he would have been traded for more draft picks. Tomlin has a bad history if keeping injured people on the team. I guess you are the brains behind that operation

and don't tell me about the pro bowl..it is american idol of football...even the dog killer got to a pro bowl.
