The head coach search

Another funny thing, somewhat related, I heard an interview with Bisciotti (Ravens owner) over the weekend. He mentioned for their HC interviews it will be an 'all day' event, with that candidate meeting several different people, teams, and departments. I started thinking about 'virtual' interviews with coaches that are in the playoffs. What exactly is that 'shortened' virtual interview producing? I think it produces an CYA for the Steelers front office to say, "look, we intereviewed all of these talented football people".

But are they are really? Is Art 2 and Omar REALLY looking or have they already made up their mind??

What makes you think this that have had a virtual interview won't be scheduled for in-person interviews???

Flores and McCarthy are known commodities so they would be the first logical in-person opportunities I'd bring in too.

Nate Scheelhaase is the guy I'm praying for. He calls a very good game and gets receivers and backs in the right place for QBs to succeed...

I think we all simply just want the very best candidate to bring this team into the current NFL.

I’m thinking we’ll lose a bidding war with Buffalo. Plus it’s a better job.

Once again… especially now with the buffalo situation..

I would be very much satisfied with Flores as the head coach and Mike McCarthy as the offensive coordinator of our football team.

I guess I just doubled down… as the kids today like to say.

That’s probably what we’ll get now.
I can’t see Shula or any of the top candidates choose us over Buffalo.
 
I'd be on the McDermitt train. You want someone that can turn it around quickly with success. I think he's our man. He's 51, not that old and can probably bring some good coordinators with him. I would have to kick those tires.

But Tomlin couldn't even set a good defense. He was just a good leader, zero x&o on either side of the ball.

Well, they cannot interview Shula or Scheelhaase again until the Rams are done playing, if that's what they're thinking about.

The problem is the Bills and Ravens might be looking at them too, and have the appeal of franchise QBs in place.

I'm a bit surprised we haven't heard anything about Klay Kubiak or Jesse Minter getting second interviews, though it's early in the week.

McDermott getting axed definitely took a **** in the punch bowl. It's just one position, but the Steelers may not have the overall options they had yesterday.
 
In the past Rooney would make the last move on the chess board and act like he was the smartest. Your comment?

They should've dumped their GM. Looking back on things, maybe a second for George Pickens would've been a good move for Buffalo. There's just no reason to not make aggressive moves when you have a QB like Allen.

If their philosophy aligns with the way they handle free agency 90% of the time, the new head coach will be taken off the scrap heap.

With the number of HC openings this year, the Steelers picked a bad year to be looking for one.

I don't think there's a lot of overlap with who they're looking at/who they want. I posted this in another thread:

Steelers candidates:
Nate Scheelhaase (Baltimore, Cleveland, Las Vegas)
Chris Shula (Arizona, Baltimore, Miami, Tennessee)
Anthony Weaver (Arizona, Baltimore)
Brian Flores (Baltimore)
Jesse Minter (Arizona, Baltimore, Cleveland, Las Vegas, Miami, Tennessee)
Ejiro Evero (Las Vegas)
Jeff Hafley (Arizona, Las Vegas, Miami, Tennessee)
Klay Kubiak
Mike McCarthy (Tennessee)

New York and Atlanta hired the AFCN coaches, who weren't on the Steelers' radar. I don't think Buffalo will go in the same direction as the Steelers either. Tennessee (rumored Nagy, Saleh, Hafley) and Miami (Hafley expected leading candidate) also don't seem focused on the Steelers' leading candidates.

Cleveland is a mystery with numerous second-round interviews (Monken, Schwartz, Minter, McDaniel, Scheelhaase, Udinski).

That leaves Arizona, Baltimore, and Las Vegas. Of this group, Minter and Kubiak are likely leading candidates.

Shula had 7 interview requests and only completed 5, meaning he probably feels good about getting one of the jobs.

I already explained to you that it's stupid to blame Flores and his #3 defense for Minnesota not making the playoffs this year. You ignored it.
I already explained to you that it doesn't make sense to blame his defense for a road playoff loss to the Rams in which they allowed under 300 yards. You ignored it.

I already explained to you that the Dolphins have been a shlt franchise that hasn't won a playoff game in 25 years, and had had one winning season in the ten years prior to BF's arrival, so it's not too hard believe that he didn't win one in his three years there. You ignored it.

I'm all for playoff victories, too. No, Flores has not won one, but I've pointed out enough reasons why he hasn't. You're not going to change your mind about the guy, which is fine.

What you cannot ignore or refute is that team defense rankings improved significantly under his tenure in both Miami and Minnesota. There's a good chance he will make similar progress if hired in Pittsburgh. As a fan, I can work with that.
 
I'm not sure what I think about Flores as the possible next coach. He seemed to mostly not do great coaching Miami and clashed big time with a young Tua. He's definitely good as a DC, but I'm not sure about HC. If he can hire a great OC and actually let that person do his thing on offense, then maybe. Last thing I want to watch is another defensive guy with zero tolerance for the offensive side.

No clue why they are bringing in 62 year old Mike McCarthy since it goes against their norm of hiring younger guys. Maybe they are already sold on Flores and are now looking at an established veteran offensive minded coach to come in for a year or two as the OC?. Especially, if they want Rodgers back next year and think his former coach might help make him stick around.
 
Now they can't interview the two Rams coaches again until they are out of the playoffs, it might be a while before any decisions are made if they are interested in them. They must not really be interested in Minter since they are not in a hurry to get him in.
