Steelers select Dri Archer in Round 3

Teddy Bruschi says we have had the best draft so far.

Yeah, they said that back in 2009 too.

So far, I'm not impressed. Shazier pick is ok, but why waste a 3rd pick on a little, fast guy that will be lucky to touch the ball 8 times a game? Like I said, could have found probably this same guy or a similar one in much later rounds.

I'm sorry Tomlin and Colbert have to go I absolutely hate the way this team is going

Hahahaha. Oooooh this board.

You havent seen one of these guys suit up yet for a Steelers practice yet- but youre already starting up the 'fire Tomlin/Colbert' chant already.

Dont know what youre seeing, but I think the first 2 picks were solid B+'s, Dri maybe a C- but I can take that with 4.26 speed and production...

2009? The same year we got Wallace, K.Allen, Ramon Foster, and the Bills starting Center? You dont think that is a solid year?!

Damn, I hope we have the same luck this year!

Here is what you have to understand. There are like 10 people that truly believe in their heart of hearts that it should be THEM sitting in the Steeler's war room on Draft Day putting their expertise to work because they once played high school football and watch a lot of draft coverage. Their venom seems to come from feeling they somehow got cheated out of their rightful job or something. Once you get that part sorted out, you expect the constant tantrums and it isn't hard to figure out who they are.

Let me add, that I think this pick is suspect too considering the needs. But you can spot the difference between the mostly rational people complaining and the ones who go into nuclear tantrum mode every 5 minutes.

I'm hesitant.

On one hand, I liked what Haley was doing with Rainey. Problem with him was that he could not stay on his feet after a cut to save his life (which made him worthless in space) or catch. If Dri can do either of these things he'll be interesting.

On the other, man is he a shrimp. Sproles works because while he's short, he's thick and can take some punishment when he has to. A stiff breeze knocked Rainey down and this guy looks shrimpier than him.

they will use him like mcluster in kc

he benched 20 reps at the combine and was clocked at 4 ,24 and 4 ,18

Like I said last night - this was Coach Haley pick. He's stronger than Rainey and after looking at his tape and combine - appears to have better balance as well.

Welcome to the team, Young Archer...

TMC, this is what I was yelling at the tv when they picked him. I know we need some depth at RB but man this pick made me scratch my head, I am shocked we have not landed a WR, CB or TE with one of our 1st 3 picks. If we were looking for return help wouldn't a guy like Gallon(wr) or Allen(cb) make more sense later in the draft while still adding depth to position of need?
Now as far as Archer goes the question is going to be are they going to use him as a Sproles type of player? Let me know if you see this as well but when I watched his film I seen good vision and good speed, but what scares me is the speed of the game changes from college to pro and will he be able to do what he did in college? Still think he is drafted way to high here....at least for us.

I really do not know how they plan on using him. This is what I know, the only player in the NFL that is his size and successfully played RB is Dexter McCluster. Now, McCluster has been moved to WR and that transition has been okay, not great. As a runningback, McCluster had one season with 516 yards and 114 carries. The other three seasons, 38 carries for 146 yards combined. So, that one season appears more of an anomaly than a trend. As far as being a receiver, he is a guy that has had 46, 52, and 53 receptions in the last three seasons, but he has only topped 500 yards once as a receiver. He has 6 career TDs.

The one, bright, shining star, has less impact on his team than our own Manny Sanders.

I know that RBs under 180 don't make it in this day and age. I know this because none have done it in over a decade. The players in the NFL are too big and too fast. People point towards Archer's durability. Sure, he is a tough kid. But, he had a shoulder issue. He had a knee injury in the bowl game in 2013. He had an ankle prior to that. He injured his ankle to start this season and it hampered him all season. Injuries have become more frequently for him lately. Just do not see how he will hold up. If he does, he will be the first. Not sure why the Steelers want to be the one team that always bucks the damn trends. Why not look at guys that statistically have a better chance of succeeding and selecting from them?

As a WR, short with short arms. Tiny hands. Poor route runner. While he is athletic, his catch radius is small. He is not a guy that goes down for balls or uses his leaping ability to go up after passes. Shoulders to knees, better hit him in that area. Not going to come in as a slot guy and give you good minutes for a while, if ever. We all laughed when Clark folded up Wes Welker, won't be as funny when someone does it to Archer, who is about 20+ pounds less.

NFL players are bigger and faster. They hit like a ton of bricks. People think because coaches state he is tough it means he will be more durable. Yep, his bones and muscles are just tougher than other guys. Bullshit. If they wanted a fast back, Lache Seastrunk was there and he is 200 pounds.

Just hard to wrap my head around this one......same old ****, did not work before, just find another one and keep slamming picks at it until it works. People compare him to Tavon Austin, but Austin is a very polished WR. This guy is a RB that will have to learn the position. I just do not get it.

I like the Tavon Austin comparison as a slot WR & return weapon, and a "Sproles-type scatback" would be his ceiling as a RB. I don't care one bit how other "midget" players flamed-out in the past - be it Rainey, or anyone else. Archer deserves a chance to show what he can do.

Combine results:

Austin vs Archer:

40 Time:
Austin, 4.34 sec
Archer, 4.26 sec

Bench:
Austin, 14 reps
Archer, 20 reps

Vertical:

Archer, 38 inches

Broad Jump:

Pretty good actually, and thanks, it is very nice of you to be concerned about my work life. Been doing it for 12 years now and I enjoy it quite a bit.

Already this season, he has delivered 30 plays of 10 yards or more -- including 18 beyond 20 yards -- in runs, receptions and returns. He has 11 touchdowns on just 71 touches. That's a touchdown every 6.4 times he touches the football, 13.2 points a game.

They use [Archer] like USC used to use Reggie Bush," English said, referring to the former USC star now with the Miami Dolphins. "They put him at tailback, they put him as a slot receiver, they motion him back and forth and move him a lot of places to get him the football.

What i liked from the highlight tape is how natural he caught the football. He made some WR catches on that reel. Over the shoulder. Some in traffic. All fluid catches. He was relaxed. Thats something that cant be taught. If he can line up in the slot. He is drawing a CB and he better have help. I was thinking Desir or Bryant when the pick came up too but im excited to see what this kid can do. We still have 6 picks.

Short Area Handling + Long Speed = Instant Offense

Here’s a jet sweep in the first half of the Go Daddy Bowl where Archer gains 44 yards on one of the best individual displays of speed and agility I saw in 2012. This is a 1st and 10 at the Kent State 34 from a 1×2 receiver, 11 personnel set. Archer is the single receiver on the strong side of the formation and motions towards the quarterback, taking the jet sweep as the strong side guard and running back pulls to the weak side edge. Here’s the play and below it, my thoughts on how it unfolds.

Clip starts at 1:07

Archer sets up his blocks with a fantastic cut inside the running back, who has to contend with an edge defender penetrating seven yards deep into the backfield. It’s not just the deep penetration early in the play that makes the ball carrier’s adjustment so impressive, it’s the fact that he has to dip inside the running back and away from the quarterback.

Avoiding one obstacle this early in a play is enough to foil most runners, but I’ve seen enough quarterback-runner collisions in my day to believe that what Archer does here is that 1 out of 10 scenario that worked in his favor. Archer then makes a second dip inside the pulling guard as he gets just outside the hash to reach the line of scrimmage.

These two cuts not only prevent a loss, but open the field for a huge gain up the hash and flat. He beats the backside defender with his acceleration is in the second level. Eight yards later, he dips outside the safety with a lightning-quick change of direction at top speed as he crosses the first down marker.

Archer beats the defensive back around the corner and reaches the 50 (16 yards into his 44-yard gain) with another secondary defender five yards down field with an angle on the runner. Archer reaches the 45, takes two steps and dips inside the corner, using his outside arm to ward off the defender.

This is a strong example of how a stiff arm can have value as either an expression of leverage or power. In Archer’s case it’s a simple tap of the flat-footed defensive back’s shoulder as he’s executing a swift cut to get behind three lineman working up field at the 40 and the stiff arm sends the defender to the ground.

Archer crosses behind these linemen at the 40, cuts across to the left hash at the 35, and makes a sharp cut inside the safety at the 30. If he doesn’t have to run into his wide receiver to make the cut he probably continues across the field and scores. However, the combination of his cut to avoid the corner and the flash of his teammate behind him forces Archer to cut towards traffic where there are five defenders within a five-yard radius.

As he reaches the 25 Archer is wrapped and it ends one of the best runs I’ve seen all year.

Again, I’ll recap why I loved this run and how it might give us a clue to what could make him a successful NFL prospect as an offensive/special teams weapon:

• Archer has a feel for anticipating and avoiding penetration.
• The ball carrier’s quickness and change of direction isn’t predicated on stop-start moves that don’t work as well in the NFL; he bends runs and accelerates through cuts, which coupled with his anticipation makes it even more difficult for backside pursuit to get easy plays when penetration alters the runner’s path.
• Archer has a feel for setting up blocks and despite his electronically timed 4.28-speed, he has the patience to work behind his blockers.
• Kent State’s big-play weapon plays with good pad level, keeps his legs moving, and understands the value of using a stiff arm to ward off contact as opposed to an instrument of punishment.

Come on guys....haven't you heard?

No more OT in the NFL...

Czar Goodell just announced they are going to a "run off"...like a shootout in the NHL, so the league eliminates injuries during OT..

Player with the Fastest 40 wins the game for the team...

Great pick!

He would have been a decent pick....in the 4th or later rounds. I just don't see any other team picking him this high. Oh well, I hope he kicks *** and makes me a believer.

Heard all the same **** with Chris Rainey. All of it. Same arguments. Basically had people stating I was not a Steeler fan, blah, blah, blah.

I am still here. Where is Rainey? Everyone does realize that Chris Rainey would only be in his 3rd season right now. He did not make it to a 2nd season, much less 2nd contract. Then, they bring in LSH for the role. Where is he? Lost for the season. Two tiny backs in 2 seasons, both one and done.

And we think they will use Archer in a way that protects him? They will magically find some way to make him productive?

If this were the combine, many here would have tested positive......

Can't believe that Spike has chimed in:

FIVE WIDE *******!!!!!!!!!

According to ESPN, he had the HIGHEST FUMBLE PERCENTAGE of all RBs. Percentage is number of fumbles per touch. He had 13 fumbles, lost 10. He only touched the ball 424 times in his career. Le'Veon Bell had 414 touches his FINAL SEASON in college.

Archer sprained an ankle in 2012, then in the bowl game, he sprained his knee. In 2013, he sprained the same ankle and it stayed with him most of the year. Also had a shoulder issue.

Also, cannot find them, what were his stats for the 2011 college season? Just curious......

Very good question. I can't find it anywhere?

This is a bad pick. They should have taken Bryant. Take a flier on a dude like this in later rounds but not in the 3rd when you have other needs. There is no way, he was the BPA, no way.

Rumor has it the steelers want no part of Bryant. We will see.

I think it might of been a little bit of a reach. They probably would of still been there in the 5th or 6th round.
