Steelers select Dri Archer in Round 3

Anywhere you look, Archer is listed as a 3-4 rnd pick.

Archer figures to put up impressive numbers at the combine, especially at the speed and agility drills. McCluster’s success will help teams to see what he can do, and his draft stock will benefit. He’s not likely to go in the first few rounds because of a lack of a definitive position, but he could find himself as a round three selection based on his athleticism and versatility.

if he has good hands and good cuts..i could see him runnings slants all day over the middle. They don't kill you anymore so it's a good spot. I'd have him trying out kickoffs,punts,in on trick play reverses...BLAZING SPEED kills. Let's see what he can do.
 
This team has needs almost everywhere but RB. It was a stupid *** pick, and it follows a trend of those types of picks since Dumb and Dumber have been working together (Yes, I think they both deserve the blame if they're both in the room.). If they miss the playoffs again after another piss poor draft, one of the Rooney's needs to shoot some Geritol and wake up. Time for them to go.
 
Also with Munchak installing the Outside Zone all I'm saying is watch out with all that speed.
 
MT and Colbert are having a horrible draft so far, and this pick was abysmal.
 
I like the pick. While the odds may be against Archer, Has unbelievable speed and after watching his highlights, he seems to have a great vision, anticipation, and patience. also better body control/ agility and has much better balance than Chris Rainey. I don't like his size but that does not automatically make him the next Rainey.
The thing that impressed me most with his highlights were his awareness and anticipation, almost dare i say antonio brown like the way he gets through tight windows and heavy traffic and makes people whiff with smooth cuts and shifts a full speed.

Despite his diminutive stature, he has a lot of strengths that can't be taught or coached.
Mike Wallace has 60 million reasons why sometimes if you have speed you don't need much else.
Not saying Archer will be a huge impact to our offense (I don't think the Steelers drafted him to be)
But you never know?

If we were looking for return help wouldn't a guy like Gallon(wr) or Allen(cb) make more sense later in the draft while still adding depth to position of need?
Now as far as Archer goes the question is going to be are they going to use him as a Sproles type of player? Let me know if you see this as well but when I watched his film I seen good vision and good speed, but what scares me is the speed of the game changes from college to pro and will he be able to do what he did in college? Still think he is drafted way to high here....at least for us.

Speed is speed...but hes doesnt have "just speed"...hes got Olympic brand (Chris Johnson class) speed. How many guys in the NFL have ran down 4.23 guys ? Prime Time ran a 4.21....Our fastest ever (Mike Wallace) ran 4.28 and Rainey a 4.37.....Im sure the coaching staff is aware this is a risky pick, but its a gamble they believe can pay off somewhere.

I dont like it, but im gonna move past it and let Haley and Munchak work out blocking and play calling and try and get Dri-Speed in adventageous situations to exploit defense or find that one seam and break it long. It takes just one man (to miss) and you could see lots of turf estate between Dri and the original LOS.

Speed does translate to the pros.....you fear it in the collegiate ranks and you fear it in the pro ranks (when its sub 4.3)...everybody now runs 4.5s and 4.4s...therey MIGHT be two or three in the entire league running 4.27 or less. Regardless, its hard to catch on a fast surface and you WONT catch it once its behind you. Look for him on lots of reverses and misdirections...

So, im not necessarily defending the pick, but i understand what the draft room is seeing (Haley wanted this gazelle im quite positive)

maybe they secretly tested all of the draft prospects for the ability to punt. Because of Roger punters are untouchable therefore if we field a team of punters, we will be unstoppable.

Horrible by landing the fastest and most versatile LB - where we have a need??? Or horrible by landing the fastest offensive player in round 3 where he was projected to be drafted??? Or maybe it's horrible because they filled the void that a departing Keisel created???

Horrible because they didn't get who he wanted it's that simple, some people need to just go play madden and do their own draft maybe they'll feel better.
 
I want the best for him, but I don't get this pick at all. He has highlights against Ball State and Towson. That speaks volumes to me. He's fast and explosive, clearly versitile. Still.......

If we still had Kreider and Fanceca it would be OK. They made Fast Willie Parker. Speed alone won't do it in the NFL, unless you bust him open. I would love to be proven wrong over time, but this pick is just out there.
 
Hope he works out, but this is the first pick I don't like at all. They hit on two big needs with their first two picks and then get cute. If they were an 11-5 ball club, ok, but two years running of 8-8 isn't the right time.
 
This pick makes no sense to me. TMC is spot on. Where is he going to play? Yes, speed is dangerous but it's only dangerous when it can be used correctly. If straight ahead speed were so great then the Raiders would have 10 SBs by now. The fact is that Archer is small... but not just small, tiny by NFL standards. He's frail, rail thin and won't last in the NFL.
 
Where are his touches coming from? Are they taking Bell off the field now? They told us last year that they wanted Bell because he's an every down back and a great receiver.

If ARcher was a 5th round pick, i'd be all for it, but using a 3rd on a role player is crazy when there are good CBs on the board and such a huge need.

I would have loved Jaylen Watkins who just went to the Eagles.
 
I think what happens with a lotta naysayers in this group, is that they fall in love with a name/named player, so it becomes embedded in their spirit as to who the logical choices should be (not taking into account character issues with a player, work ethic, college coaches feedback on a certain player, etc)

Everybody wanted (outside of Watkins) Mike Evans or Allen Robinson or a name such as Marquis Lee...a name floating around like Dennard etc...when we pass on players theyve attached themselves to, its like theyve lost something...so not much else will make them happy and anything else done in the draft becomes moot to them. Then theres the group that was gonna piss on this draft no matter who we took...

Look, folks didnt want to admit it but, we were/are in a rebuilding mode, especially on defense. Yeah we have our franchise QB at the helm but for the most part we are far away from a finished product (serious title contender). Our Oline is young (Pouncey is probably the most tenured), our backfield had a rookie starting.Behind him we had two fat kids (Redmon and Dwyer) that we hoped would embody the 3 yrds and clouds of dust philosophy. Well, thats not whats working in this league anymore. Fatbacks are extinct. Deal with that and accept it.

In a league thats evolved into a showcase of high powered offenses that are predicated on spreading defenders out and using slot wr's, hbrid TEs and running backs in the passing game to exploit big, beefy linebackers with no footspeed, we have had to adjust how we draft on defense. Players like Levon Kirkland, JPeezy and (as we saw in his last year here), Silverback would be eaten alive in todays passing NFL.Philosophies have change...theres no more power game. Im afraid many of us realize it but DONT wish to accept it.

I don't know why you assume this. People are providing long, detailed explanations as to why Archer was a bad pick. I don't see a whole lot of "Archer sucks! Peace out" posts.

That's very cute online psychiatry, but it's not based on anything. I think you'd prefer everyone love every Steeler, every pick, every move they make.

I'm not naysaying. I'm just saying he might of been a little too expensive for his worth.

Look, back with Chris Rainey, I was okay with it. I understood the risks, but I argued it was pretty late in the draft (5th round) and AT THE TIME, there weren't a lot of other great options on the board.

This is completely different. This is a top-100 pick in (according to Colbert) the deepest draft ever. You can not justify in a supposed deep draft a risky pick like this. One that statistically WILL NOT WORK. You want to throw away pick 160 on a risk? Fine. You want to throw away pick 97 on a risk? No way.

Like I've been harping on over and over and over again. Our GM has no concept of asset valuation and risk vs. reward. That pick was a resource and he risked on something that has very little possibility of resulting in reward. I wonder if Colbert invests his 401k in penny stocks, because that is exactly what this is.

As an organization we are just not investing our resources as wisely as other teams around the league. Period. And we are suffering in depth, talent and wins/losses because of it.

Until the investments get better, the returns are going to continue to be lousy. You can't change that fact.
 
Well he should contribute immediately. That is more than we will get out of our 1st and 2nd round pick this year. When I think of this pick, I can not get the image of Chris Rainey his rookie year getting hit, fumbling and falling to the ground like a dead man...
