Franchise QB's have never been easy to find. This is why I have tried to enjoy Ben as much as possible. The time between TB and BB was a long and bumpy ride. I don't expect the ride after BB and the next one to be any smoother (although hopefully shorter)
I also have tried to enjoy Ben as much as possible. I was too young to appreciate Terry Bradshaw in the San Diego playoff game and vs. the Jets in his final game.
Every year from 1984-2004 I was searching and wanting the Steelers to find a QB.
Almost every draft I used to scour and rate to see if there was a QB for us to take.
In truth, especially in the 1990s, there were not that many good QBs to be drafted -- it got better late in the decade, but there was a real dry spell.
Nonetheless, I will admit that I was devastated when we drafted a Guard: John Reinstra #9 Overall in 1986 when I was certain we would take Chuck Long. While they were both monumental busts, I found it odd that Noll said they were happy with the QB situation but still used a 3rd round pick on Bubby Brister.
I hated Stoudt, but I was one of the first to be on the "
Should have drafted Dan Marino bandwagon"
I never understood why Chuck Noll went with Mark Malone over David Woodley, but doesn't matter since both were garbage.
The one that angered me the most was NOT trading for Steve Young in 1987, then trading for Todd Blackledge in 1988 and attempting to trade for Jack Trudeau after that. If we took Marino, we likely never would have gotten Rod Woodson, but oh how amazing that team could have been with a core of Young, Woodson, Lloyd, etc.
It wasn't long after the Neil O'Donnell pick that I remember reading an NFL GM questioning the Steelers QB strategy -- never trying to find a great QB as it was against his mindset. I think we were all happy to see Neil go,
I would be remiss if I didn't say I badly wanted Todd Marinovich in 1991. But dear god we took Huey Richardson. *I really did a lot of mock drafts at this time, and Brett Favre was a guy I was intrigued with. I've never claimed I wanted us to take him, but the way the Jets (GM Ron Wolf) wanted him then traded a #1 pick for him to go to GB the next year....before he was a star it kinda irked me....
I hated the Browns, yet wanted us to pick up Bernie Kosar and insert him in for O'Donnell. No, he goes to Dallas.
I was on the Kordell bandwagon in 1997 and firmly off by 1998.
I was pissed Dante Culpepper was drafted a few picks before us in 1999.
I was livid we took Plaxico Burress over Chad Pennington in 2000.
I was literally on knees praying for Drew Brees to be our 1st round pick in 2001.
I hoped Kordell would get injured in 2001 and Tommy Maddox would start and was outright calling for Maddox in 2002 to be the starter before the season.
I was wrong on a lot of guys through the years, but one thing that must be done when Ben retires, don't sit on hands hoping for someone to drop. Be aggressive and trade up, even if its one lousy pick, if you think he's the guy. Don't wait and hope cuz it could be a long while. The Chiefs got aggressive with Patrick Mahomes, the Packers were aggressive with Brett Favre and lucky with Aaron Rodgers. The Eagles made a good move for Carson Wentz, the Browns just drafted trash, it's a gamble. But the worst thing to do is sit and hope for your guy to drop, because it can be a long time before you get lucky enough for it to happen.
