The more I think of the upcoming season and salary cap conundrum the Steelers are going to be in. One of these things may happen- Ben stays and seriously restructures his salary.
Ben is cut or retires- they bring in a stop gap vet or extend Rudolph for a few years as the rebuild quarterback. No matter what- the salary cap is what will dictate what happens. It appears we may be headed back to the Malone era for a while.
The transition from Ben and his well earned salary is, of course, inevitable and upon us. Extending Ben just kicks the can down the road. He may not get top QB dollar, but he isn't going to play for cheap either. So much rides on how his arm and body feel after the season. Then, of course, is the cap situation. I am fully in the camp that the cap won't go down nearly as much as people think. My guess is the NFLPA and NFL will come to some sort of agreement to spread the losses out over time. Anything else is just bad business. And as much as it pains me to say, there is still a reasonable chance that next season many states will not be allowing full capacity for some or all of the season next year as well. Either way, it is not in players or teams favor to have huge reduction to the cap next year. My best guess for Ben (assuming his body is okay), is that he will finish his contract next year and then retire. MP will go with him and perhaps even DD. I'd also bet Kevin Colbert rides into the sunset as well. The inevitable rebuild is coming. The good news is, the debates around here should be pretty epic.
