This is my assessment and hope for Tomlin. Early on he was handed a stacked team just a year removed from the super bowl and was able to maintain enough to get us back to the dance and won one and lost another. But as Cowhers team got old the team regressed and the young coach had to try to develop his own team. He had some successes (Lev Bell/Marcus Gilbert) but more misses (Golson, Archer, Adams, Jones) but as of recent that trend has turned around. IMO he had his best year coaching and if he can conquer game time adjustments and clock management he might just turn that corner from slightly above average to great.
My assessment is Tomlin was not ready to be a head coach when hired. He as a DB and DB coach had the worst pass defense in the nfl in his one year as vikings D-coordinator. The Rooney’s (who went from great owners, Chief, to the leagues jackasses, Art the deuce) hired based on skin color not ability and track record. At age 35 Tomlin wasn’t ready. But he is now 48 and I feel if his natural progression would have been allowed to take place he’d be ready to take the helm of a team and turn them around. Again, remember most nfl head coaches take over bad nfl teams. Tomlin got the keys to a HOF QB and a great team. I hope that he takes that next step and he ends up being a HOF coach.
