Yes, it is only practice...

I got no dog in this fight but the thread is funny as **** to me. Especially when I read comments like "He didn't get any tackles". The first thing I think reading that is how many snaps did he play and of those plays, how many times was it his responsibility to make the tackle on a play. So, for fun, I decided to run the replay and watch Oliver. I don't care if he looks good or bad, I just watched. I didn't watch the first game but he was going up against a pretty fine OG in that game (Quenton Nelson). My notes on the Carolina game:

1. Defensive right, three technique. Line slides his way and back threatens sweep to his side. He honors his running lane nicely and in perfect position to spill the ball carrier to the sidelines. However, it was play action and the QB bootlegs the other way looking to throw. Oliver did his job perfectly on this play.

2. Defensive left, 3 tech. Pass play he draws a double team initially. OT eventually slides off to pick up another defender. OG is able to keep Oliver at bay at this point, but there isn’t a lot of places for him to go and he appears to be honoring the inside scramble lanes though. Pass is incomplete

3. Defensive right, 3 tech. Draws an initial double team. His left hand "punch" to the guard knocks the guards helmet off. Oliver gets hands high and gets one paw on the pass ending the play and the series. Carolina has to punt.

4. never get a clear look at a number, but I think it is him in a 3 tech on the defensive left. If it is him, he crashes down but the guard is pulling and the OT has the angle and locks him up. Oliver is pretty strong and giving a decent battle but gets folded backwards. First look, I thought OT folded him, but second look I see a Panther on the back of Oliver’s legs that collapses the back of his knee.

5. Defensive left, 3 tech, Offense pulls guards again so Oliver is crashing the B gap giving the OT the angle on the down block. Oliver recovers and stays locked up with the OT. This is a win for the OT, but he has a big advantage on the DL with the down block.

6. Def right, 3 tech. Draws initial double team on the backside before one blocker slides off. Run play is away from Oliver.

7. Def left, looks like a wide 3. Line showing high hat so he is in pass rush mode. Keeps to his lane and the pass is out quickly away from him.

8. D-right, 3 tech. Draws initial double team trying to seal him towards the center. Backside OG is pulling to help that side and its a train wreck in front of Oliver. Pass is out quickly to Oliver’s side but falls incomplete.

9. D-Right, 3tech. Pass play, Oliver gets stood up on the pass rush. QB is flushed and scrambles the other way.

10. Looks like wasn’t in for the next run play, but returns for a second down pass. D-right, 3 tech. He gets upfield on the high hat block of the guard; looks like he gonna get the better of the OG, but OC comes down and hits Oliver from the side. Oliver goes to the ground but bounce up pretty damn fast. Pass is already out though.

11. D-right, 3 tech, fires up field and is on the outside shoulder of the OG (the b-gap). Panthers show inside handoff with back attacking A gap. Oliver gets across the OG’s face and dives at back cutting at his legs. Had it been an handoff, the disruption to the back would have been significant and the backer would have dropped him for a loss. Oliver back on his feet instantly and sees QB release the ball and reacts that way. The pass was intentionally thrown at RB’s feet due to outside pressure on QB.

12. DR 3tech, ol shows high hats and Oliver motors upfield putting the OG on skates. OG is darn near driving into the QB. Allen gets the pass off but high and incomplete. Olivers hands up in the pass lane very quickly.

13. DR 3 tech. Its a pass and they have him gaming over to the left. He hits a little spin move and runs into the back working through the line to his underneath pass pattern. Pass is out to that back very quickly but Oliver still got his hands up.

He isn't in the game on the next two Carolina possessions so I assume he did not play the rest of the game. There you have it, 13 total plays, no tackles, and a third down pass tipped. Getting away from stats, the eye test is that the kid is both strong and fast but his play is disciplined. By that I mean he honors his run/pass lane responsibilities which doesn't always get you tackles, but it is correct play for the DL. If I had any real criticism of his play it would be his hand fighting. He is fast upfield and strong, but he will need to develop some hand techniques (which is normal for a rookie DL). Of course, I only saw 13 plays and 13 preseason plays is a really small sampling. One thing is clear, kids is a baller; good chance he will develop into a darn fine DL for the Bills.

Coach will take one lazy look at this and think he is reading Spanish.

Excellent synopsis Hoot. Informative, lucid, and clear.

Coach......this is how to communicate your player observations. Agenda free evaluation. If you learn it this way, maybe your analysis and or bets could be worth something on this board.

And to think, if the Bills traded their pick to the Steelers for AB, Oliver wouldn't have gone in the top ten...

So after two preseason games Ben has a 0.0 QBR, with no completions.......

It’s preseason Dumb ***.

Ben looked great last night. Oliver still does not have a have tackle. 0.0.

It’s easier to stand out in the preseason as not every stater plays hard and back ups are often playing. Get a clue.

From the Office Libre document I wrote it in as I watched the replay.

I see you didn't actually read what I wrote. Feel free to queue up the games on NFL Replay and watch for yourself and then come back with your own review.

Are you trying to find a better source, Coach?

Hoot has passion and does the research. Research takes time, and explaining it to others takes even more time.

I found Larry Donald:

iu

Currently pursuing a helmet grievance against the NFL that dates back to 1936.

Wants to play without a helmet, says that covering up his hair is a "national tragedy."

Yo Coolie. Did Oliver play last night? The man failed to register a tackle the entire pre-season.

Didn't watch the game...but since he is the starter he likely didn't suit up last night.

you pay an awful lot of attention to a guy who don't think much of. You seem obsessed....maybe you should get a hobby? Like watching football games. Maybe you could actually learn to see which players have it vs those that don't..

That’s interesting. I don’t have the time, but if he does I’d like to read his thoughts on Davis.

Hear that Hoot? Coach would like you to give him your assessment on Davis. Because, he can’t factually rationalize on his own why he thinks Davis sucks.

He doesn’t have the time because he’s too busy watching Oliver to overcome his huge fail on draft day against Coolie.

I had not noticed the comment, no. Thanks for pointing it out.

To the Oliver thing first...As I said above, I have no dog in that fight and don't care if Oliver busts or goes HoF. I just got a kick out of the thread and decided to watch him to see what all the hub bub was about and shared what I saw. What can I say, I enjoy watching tape and this is the first year I have been able to in a while so it was a chance to do it.

I've not done a deep dive on film with Davis in preseason or in past years so my view is the same broadcast view as everyone elses. That said, Davis is definitely in a Show Me year. Physically, he is strong enough and fast enough but the guy has been bounced around positions in a defense that has been a wreck the last couple of years (for various reasons). His rookie year, I saw a guy who could hit and make solid tackles but was learning NFL coverage. I was quite surprised by (and disappointed with) his regression his second year. He was moved to a new position and I expect mistakes with that, but his tackling and hitting fundamentals went to ****. Sadly, that was true about the entire team. Davis also had shoulder surgery before that season. Thump your chest all you want about tough guys, but full recovery from surgery is harder than most people realize (this I know all too well). I suspect his issues were in part due to that but also in part to a defense that, as a whole, did not tackle for ****. I actually laid much of that years defense on coaching. I don't know if it was changes to scheme or lack of focus on fundamentals in practice or what. But fundamentals across the entire defense was suspect that season but no arguing he regressed.

For 2018, there is a bit of a larger picture to consider. Davis was moving to his third spot in 3 years, but not just any position. He was moved to the Defender of Last Resort if you will. That means a lot of his role is mopping up when things break down in other places. The result is a lot of times it looks like he is coming over late or out of position when he really isn't. He is coming over to clean up someone else's mess (not always, but a lot of times). Well, what was around him? We had no replacement for Shaz so that means coverage issues in the middle. TJ and Bud flipped sides (for the better, but it is still a change). Burns was awful and Davis had a rookie starter beside him. That left a lot of areas where mopping up would be needed. Especially one - I felt Davis looked a lot better when Burns was not on the field. That is not a film based read...just a casual observation. Anyway, not making excuses for the guy, he left plenty on the field on his own. I am just saying it wasn't as bad as folks might think because a lot of times he was the mop man on Aisle 4 and not the guy who dropped the Garlic and Herb Prego jar in the first place. He did show some improvement in fundamentals as the season went on, but not where I thought he was at the end of his rookie year. In other words, the needle was going back up, but not there yet.

So, for this year. Nelson is in for Burns. Edmunds is looking like an absolute beast in preseason. Bush and Barron add much needed speed in the middle. There are signs the pass rush will be better. And, the guy is in his second year in the same spot. There is nothing standing in his way to a good year and make no mistake, it is a show me year for him. He is actually one of the guys high on my "watch" list for the season; it is a prove it year for him. I still see him as more of a physical/tackler type baller than cover guy despite his experience at CB. I don't see him as a ball hawk and I don't think the team is going to ask him to be that. I do think we will see a much better defense this year and a much better Davis. He is never going to be a HoF or likely even Pro Bowl. But most guys aren't and that doesn't mean they suck either.

Very much looking forward to September 8, 2019 at 5:20 p.m. Pittsburgh Steelers Time. Let's see how they do against the greatest dink-and-dunk passer of all time.

Nice summary Hoot. Agree with pretty much all you said. As you pointed out it’s his 2nd year at Free, so continuity will be a good thing. Kudos on the tackling issues commentary as most of the uninformed don’t take into account about covering the back end of the defense with a rook next to you. Lolley has stated numerous times Davis did what he was told last year about keeping long gains to a minimum. Something he did successfully by cutting 20 yds or longer by half. 7 from 14. It was emphasized early, that was the first priority, INTs 2nd by the back end. Towards the later 1/3 of the season, the defense game planned back to being more aggressive in playing the ball. Don’t know who it was on SiriusXM as a guest (Jayson Taylor I think) but he stated exactly your point in regards to the actual tackling issues. Fans can’t look at just one player, when several players on the same unit are missing tackles, it’s a technique issue, it’s a responsibility issue, especially if you are covering up for another player. Everything seems to collapse as it did in late 2017 because everyone trying to cover up each others mistakes. It appears it has started to clear up, and while there will always be missed tackles, the unit as a whole is showing some excellent form tackling. Bush and Edmonds specifically.

Expect to hear Coach provide his superfluous criticism of your take.

Very much looking forward to September 8, 2019 at 5:20 p.m. Pittsburgh Steelers Time. Let's see how they do against the greatest dink-and-dunk passer of all time.

I actually like our chances.
