The aftermath: what the talking heads are saying.

Please explain how Harbaugh out coached Tomlin.....what did he specifically do that was out coaching anyone?
From where I was watching it was painfully apparent that a QB starting his first NFL game having a handful of plays was able to move the football with quick passes and exploited huge openings in the middle of the field getting mismatches with TE's. The fact that the Steelers did not correct this one glaring problem somehow either means they were content giving the Rats this yardage OR Voila, had no idea how to compensate for it. Sounds like a "coaching shortcoming" to me!

Yes an instance when you've used it concerning other ethnic backgrounds. In what context did you use it?

Ok, here's an example that I can recall from a few weeks ago. I was talking with a co-worker, who just happens to be white, about the fact that his kid wants a brand new Iphone 6S, for Christmas, essentially went something like this:

Co-worker: So, Ethan says he wants Santa to bring him one of those new Iphones for Christmas, says there's a gold one out there that he wants.
Me: Seriously? Your son is only 8 years old, why in the hell does he need an Iphone?
Co-worker: Yeah, I hear ya, my wife is really wanting to get it for him, but I dunno, kinda pricey. Maybe I'll get him another, cheaper, phone and he'll be happy anyway.
Me: Ha! You know that's a bunch of bull-jive, kids these days have to have the "coolest" crap that comes around.

Completely innocuous statement, no one did a double-take, no one gasped, we both just chuckled and went about our days.

So sure calling someone a dumb *** who if you took the time to read up on is far from dumb is OK. When we had a another coach from 92 to 05 was never referred to in this way. Sure it's just me.

C'mon man.....you've never referred to someone a dumb *** regardless of their actual level of intelligence?

IIRC someone here called him a jive-talking fool...

I asked the question because you weren't the only one to use that phrase. I asked the question because the word isn't associated with all races. So it didn't matter to me what your race was. Racism isn't restricted to black vs white it could also be black on black, white on white etc.. you can be racist to your own race. Now if you had used the other examples you used we wouldn't be having thus convo because those aren't specifically associated with a certain race.

The slang word "jive" (along with hip and dig) is generally attributed to the black culture. One example of that below but there are many.

http://itre.cis.upenn.edu/~myl/languagelog/archives/001966.html

How is it racist then to label a black mans words with a word attributed to the black culture? I seriously doubt anyone would be feeling or feigning butthurtness if someone had said they "dig" the way Tomlin coaches or that his words were "hip."

If I said Tomlin was rapping about the the play at the presser, would that be racist too? Or just outdated, ergo, not hip? I just think sometimes people need to shorten their butthurt antennae and quit looking so hard for reasons to be offended.

You ignored why I said he was discouraged. I said it was because he knew Harbaugh was out coaching Tomlin again and he felt helpless. That is on Tomlin.

Where do you get this ****.....? Do you just randomly draw **** from the pits of ridiculousness.....? At WHAT point did Ben KNOW Tomlin was being outcoached ? 2 minutes to go, second to last drive, did he just go thru the motions knowing a TD would seal the win ? But nah, "**** coach...he was outsmarted by Harbaugh so I'll tank this driven and take the sack, make high risk throws in 3rd and 4th down....."

Im gonna say, go with it.......😉 see if it sells

It was a disappointing game as a Steeler's fan and fantasy owner whose team is loaded with Steelers. It was my lowest point output of the year. I should have simply looked at our recent history against Baltimore and benched them all, but no. The homer in me, coupled with the fact Baltimore is ******* terrible, was starting a qb who had been on their roster for 12 days, and us fighting to control our playoff destiny, said this time would be different. Shame on me.

You suck. :)

Nope. I suck. :)

I blame El Nino. It simply was not chili weather. I grilled burgers.

I will do better this week. I will have that chili prepared well in advance and it will have ATTITUDE!! It's going to unleash hell! :)

6) If the Steelers miss the playoffs for the third time in four years, it’s time the national media take a hard look at Mike Tomlin.

Tomlin seems to be above second-guessing because he’s won a Super Bowl and coached in a second. He doesn’t get a pass in my book. Big Ben Roethlisberger, in my opinion, is in the same class as Tom Brady. Big Ben is the modern-day John Elway. Tomlin has not maximized Roethlisberger’s prime years.

It’s inexcusable for the Steelers to miss the playoffs three of four years. After Sunday’s loss to the Ravens, Tomlin’s squad is out of the playoffs unless they get some help from the Jets or the Broncos.

Tomlin consistently makes odd late-game decisions. He coaches like someone who knows he’ll never get seriously questioned. He was born on coaching third base. At a young age, he was given the most stable head-coaching position in professional sports and a franchise quarterback. He needs to do more with it. As someone who roots for Roethlisberger, the Steelers and Tomlin every season, I’m not impressed.

I've seen a couple of articles like this now. Others are starting to see what we've been watching for years. I actually started to like Tomlin again after last weeks win. This loss though is just a harsh reminder of our reality. Obviously.

Nice story glad you attempted. But if you think that's the context in which was alluded no problem. Case closed smh

As far as B&GB goes, I generally ignore him - but, apparently, I'm his internet hero...

And I generally ignore you too as its pretty much garbage reading. But im really tired of you bringing up race when it comes to Tomlins Defense. Or am I just being brave again?

HA!! We needed that... :)

Sorry man but that's Bravo Sierra. Unless somebody flat says they don't like Tomlin because he is black you can't say it's racism that causes the criticism. Mr Tomlin has more than earned everything we faulted him for. I personally have compared him to a white coach with similar issues (John Gruden) and suggested that we try to lure Tony Dungy out of retirement. I also pointed out Luvie Smith who coached Chicago to the Super Bowl with a big handful of nothing at QB as another option over Mr Tomlin when he came available. Notice Tampa is improving under Coach Smith while our Steelers remain stagnant under Mr Tomlin.

I personally compare him to another white Head Cloach with similar luck: Barry Switzer

Cowher was never referred like that because he was not ever close as being as dumb as Tomlin. Cowher had his faults, and I critisised him a lot and even wanted him out by the turn of the millenium. But now, seeing what Tomlin has done with this once feared and respected organisation, I wish he had stayed. Putting Tomlin in the same bracket with Cowher is just stupid.

Of course buddy. Not even during the 5-11 6-10 7-9 years

To me that is still on everyone. You're playing in the National Football League and a professional football player you should be motivated to get the job done every week.

Point taken though it is also on Tomlin and the coaching staff. And Tomlin deserves the criticism that comes with that, no argument from me on that.

My initial response was to the first post. Ben got discouraged???? Really? I suppose that is on Tomlin too? Players need to be accountable as well. If you're discouraged. pick yourself up and get on with it.

Some people act like this is peewee league where the coach needs to micromanage every little damn thing a player does. Oh Ben's a little discouraged Tomlin better go over give him a hug and give him the remembering Titans speech.

Phil Simms put it well. I have heard him say (paraphrasing) that football is such a hard sport, that the majority of players need coaches to push them and push them, or they won't push themselves hard enough to do what is needed to win. He said for every Jerry Rice, who has the drive to push himself without a coach needing to give him the extra kick in the ***, there are 100 players who need coached. This is where Tomlin is fail. He thinks he can motivate by being buddies and being "cool" and the rest takes care of itself. That is an *** clown plan. I prefer a Chuck Noll who spends zero energy on saying cliches and trying to appear cool. As a matter of fact, when Noll did speak, the players often didn't even know what his point was. But that didn't matter, because Noll was about ACTIONS, not using cliches such as "We don't live in our fears." Belichick is similar: very little blather, but you know if you don't do your job, you will be benched or cut, no discussion needed.

Everyboy knew the Steelers were re-building in those seasons and after that, back to being a feared smashmouth, hard hitting team, and more importantly, back to winning in the play-offs.

Tomlin came and along with Arians, lost the identity of the team. Care to remind us when was the Steelers last win in play-offs under your heroe Tomlin?

I was very sick of Cowher, starting during the Kordell years. He did blow coaching during home AFCC games, three times. (SD, Denver, NE). Belichick typically plowed the field with him. And when MT came on the scene, I loved him; I felt that he always said the right things. But as time wore on, most of us noticed his rhetoric was mostly empty. And while BC was becoming infamous for being stubborn on pulling players (thus admitting being wrong, and keeping ****** players like Kordell, Scott, Gildon, Washington, etc.) MT is much more flawed in this area. His insistence on keeping Blake on the field is beyond imbecilic.

difference is that switzer actually coached his *** off prior to getting the job and taking over a loaded squad and then the championship that followed.
mikey T had never been a head coach at any goddamn level. one of the single greatest franchises at the highest level is NOT where you should start

Of course buddy. Not even during the 5-11 6-10 7-9 years

in the 5-11 and 6-10 years, those teams did not have the horses to line up and beat the **** out of anyone they played against.
top 3 running back
top 3 wide receiver
top 3 quarterback

this team SHOULD compete for the championship every single year

Of course buddy. Not even during the 5-11 6-10 7-9 years
But only a clown like you would point to that because really a few years at the bottom where you amass talent leads to great drafts. IThe absolute worst thing a team can do is hang around in the middle for years on end picking up more mediocre talent to go with their mediocre talent. If they don't some how get in this weekend and go on a run, I wish they would be 6-10 and get some good picks. They ****** need it even by your own words on defense where their only players are Heyward and Timmons.
