Why is everyone assuming a franchise tag on Bell will cost $14.5 million?

I don't think he is greedy at all. Some might, and that is their prerogative.

Really with that short shelf life, I think he knows this is his last big contract. If he didn't know I am sure his agent let him know. And he is trying to squeeze what he can.

I don't blame either side on their stance.

I suspect a contract will be worked out, and a little more than what the Steelers initially wanted to pay, but less than what Bell wanted.

I just prefer they settle this sooner than later. In regards to free agency. But I think the Steelers will restructure regardless.

So in this round and round, all parties including fans will be happy when it is a done deal.

Us fans are impatient as hell. We want instant gratification and as slash says, the deal will get done somewhere in between. The slight increase in cap only adds to the FA sifning(s) we may obtain. 4year 32mil GAURANTEED 55mil contract.

Ben is already making well below the top QBs, and now he should take a pay cut so Bell can get twice as much as the next RB???? Thats just dumb, Ben makes well below his market value.

Peterson's contract doesn't exist anymore, so quit bringing it up.

The dead money in Bell's deal he turned down would've made it very unlikely he gets cut after just two seasons, so unless something major happened he'd be here at least 3 seasons.
He was guaranteed 30 million, Freeman was only guaranteed 18.

I don't get all the Freeman talk? That dude isn't in Bell's league and it's not close. Forget the one dimensional Peterson's contract? Why? He got a lot of money and he was never the all around back Bell is. Ultimately it's up to the Steelers and his agent to figure it out. How much he wants, or will get doesn't mean anything to me other than whether he's on the team. When your team is loaded on offense you're going to have cap issues. It's just part of the deal.

Because he signed his deal years ago. The value has went up since he signed that deal. Im talking about now when he signs this new deal why cant he take less? So we can sign Bell and some defensive guys. Does his new deal need to be what Cousins and Garoppolo are making??

OK, then why can't BELL sign for less so we can sign defensive guys????? And don't give me that crap that BEN has made his money and doesn't need as much. Bell needs to sign for a competitive market value and not some "set the new market" value for RBs. The STEELERS will tag him and then he has the opportunity to find out "market value" with that value probably not being the value he says it is. I just don't want to end up in "CAP HELL" like we had been in the past not to long ago. No one can predict injury but this RB has been well used. If the defense is NOT upgraded then BELL will not make a difference.

Why is that arguement crap?

I can't see Bell taking the offer from last year, so that means they'll have to up their deal. To tag him it's like 14.6 million, I don't care what anyone says, he's not that much better than all other rbs where you pay him 6 million more than the next highest paid RB

Freaken A. He's not that much better, and he's a distraction, and one off the field incident away from a long vacation. Did I mention the guy hurt his knee twice, and most RB's don't do as well as they age?

No he doesn't, and I bet he doesn't make as much as they do, even though he has every right to ask for that. When he signed his deal it was quite a bit lower than what he'd get on the open market, so he did sign a cap friendly deal.

Ben signed his extension in 2015, he was the 14th highest paid QB in 2016, I'd say that is a pretty team friendly deal

You realize, that father time is undefeated. All RBs, all players in general degrade in skill when they age.

What does your Madden game say he’s worth?

Ant,

His last contact ext I think Ben got 17 mil in the second year, and he gets 12 mil the final 3 years (2016/17/18/19). So he has two more 12 mil guarantees. Top of my head guess.

so let's delve into hypothetical, since none of us will ever see that kind of money...

say the Steelers sign him to a 5-year $$$-contract with $xx guaranteed.

can they put stipulations in the contract that IF Bell is suspended for violating the drug policy, that the contract is null and void?

I think the reports were that it was $30m. He was already, practically, guaranteed $26m+ without signing it, though.
Not if he got hurt, or failed another drug test.

The 3rd year would be pretty much guaranteed too because it would be a big hit to cut him after two seasons.
Just take the 30 million guaranteed. That's 12 million more than what the #2 RB is guaranteed and 6 million less than Hopkins, the 3rd highest paid WR.

But the drug thing is completely within his control, so that is a non factor. Injury *might* be a factor and might not. It would have had to be a season or career ending injury. Could happen. He was betting that it wouldnt and won.

And also in Bells case its not guaranteed to him. The steelers taking a cap hit if they had too doesnt guarantee him anything

He still would've had 30 million instead of 26(if he signs the tag), and a 3rd year at an extra 10 or 12 million. For them to cut him after two seasons, his dead money hit would be around 18 million I think. 30 million signing bonus prorated over the 5 years would be 6 million per, with 3 years left if cut after the first two.

Like I said, 30 million is 12 million more guaranteed than the #2 RB and puts him around top 5 in guaranteed wr money
