Why is everyone assuming a franchise tag on Bell will cost $14.5 million?

To the first post-

4. Someone offers Bell a contract after the draft that we can't match. We let him go and receive 2 first round picks, but since the offer was after the draft we get 2019 and 2020 #1 selections. We then have to find a starting RB in the scrap heaps since the draft and FA are all over.

(that's why you exclusive tag him)

So the draft comes and he isn't signed? I don't see that happening regardless.

Bell is a rapper a ****** one, but a rapper. I doubt he would rap to a Pink Floyd song.

Perhaps he would do a ****** rap rendition of QUOTE]

Because rappers never do their takes on old school rock songs........say Aerosmith and Run DMC.

Very seldom. Look how far you went back on your example. There is more recent ones like in present day.(Post Malone) But yeah. BTW that is usually being paired up with a rock/pop/country artist. What artist is going to want to pair up with Bell's ****** rap sound and lyrics?

Vegas has already learned that they need a prominent Pittsburgh athlete to be a viable franchise...

All the talk is posturing. The team wants to get a deal done. Bell doesn't want another one year deal, he wants a long term deal. They are posturing to get the best deal they can. All said, if ARII says he wants him locked up then you know the deal will get done. The owner isn't going to come out and say this without some action behind his words.

They offered him around 15 per last season on a long term deal, far and away would've made him the highest paid RB in the NFL and he turned it down.
Do you think the Steelers are going to up that? I don't see him signing for that this season

Don't know what they are going to offer. I do know that the salary cap is going up this year and Bell will use that to his advantage at the negotiating table. My only concern is the length of the contract given that Bell is now 26. Do you want to give him a long term deal when RBs wear down more than any other position in the game?

I front load the **** out of his contract and make it easy to cut him in year 4 or 5 so they can get out of jail so to speak if his play drops off.

I can't see Bell taking the offer from last year, so that means they'll have to up their deal. To tag him it's like 14.6 million, I don't care what anyone says, he's not that much better than all other rbs where you pay him 6 million more than the next highest paid RB

I thought it was more like $13 mill a year.

Bell already said he won't accept what they offered last year. If they sign him, it will be for $15 million or so per year with at least $30 million guaranteed. It's just crazy money for any RB in the league. That's almost double what the next closest RB makes. There just really is no justification for it with the other needs our team has.

Early retirement for Bell?

Just to to remind everyone......the contract offer was initially accepted in terms by Bell’s agent. However Bell declined it altogether. There was speculation his agent felt the deal was fair based upon the original parameters, but Bell “got whispered” he knows he’s worth more security. This is where the guaranteed money concern came from.

Well maybe it's time he finds out.
The contract was 5 years 60 million with the first two years @15 each guaranteed(freemans guaranteed $ for his contract was only 18), the last 3 @10 million each, and unless he was hurt, he'd be here for at least 3 years so he'd make at the minimum 40 million.

Yeah, I think the sticking point is he wants 3 years guaranteed. The Steelers like to set contracts for future push (like they did to AB and Tuitt) on bonus flexing, but Bell may think his position has a greater injury risk (which is somewhat accurate) and wants those bonuses for three years guaranteed. I thinks that doable but with that extra 10 guaranteed as the 3rd year. Pretty much the same $, but that 3rd year is guaranteed.

I'm quickly getting tired of his greedy self. He doesn't realize that giving him over 15M (almost twice as much as the next highest RB) will hurt the team at other positions.

Welcome to professional sports. Bell is getting ripped apart because he wants to reset the market for RB's. A position that touches the ball the second most after a QB, and somehow he's the greedy one? Brown, who is the best WR in the game, will go down as one of the greatest WR to ever play, yet still only touches the ball 5-10 times a game on average, and is making $17m/year. Ben, our franchise QB is making $22m/year. Either one of these guys could have signed a "team friendly" deal that wouldn't have "hurt the team in other positions" but didn't. But it's cool because, Ben and Brown.

Now lets not get it twisted, I love those guys. Two of my favorite ALL TIME Steelers, but lets not pretend that Bell is the only "greedy" one on the team here. The problem we are having, is having so many GREAT players on one team. It's a rarity, and it is going to take some cap maneuvering to make it all work. But I have faith that the FO is doing everything they can to make it work.

To say that Leveon Bell isn't worth what he's asking for because Devonta Freeman is making $8.25m/year is dumb. It's a strawmans argument. First Bell was our leading rusher, and in a "down year" he had 400 yards MORE than Freeman did rushing. Bell is also our second leading receiver with 85 receptions, Freeman was 4th on the falcons with 36. It's not even worth comparing, because Bell is double the player he is. Both on the field, and with what he causes defensive coordinators to do to try and stop him.

Bell is absolutely worth $7m more than Freeman, and it isn't even close. Adrian Peterson was making $14m/year when he signed his extension with the Vikings, it was clear he was the best back in football and it wasn't even close. And he didn't have the receiving skills that Bell has. The only issue I have with this whole situation, is making it work somehow. But I absolutely try to get it done.

Freeman played 14 games vs. Bell’s 16 so the yardage difference isn’t that big. Plus, Freeman averaged 4.4 yd per carry vs. Bell’s 4.0. I think we’d be fine with Freeman.

A lot here act as though you just can't replace BELL. You don't have to as you need to replace 75% of him (in touches). Other members on the team will make up that last 20% and we will lose the remaining 5%. Bell's money is a lot to handle but if there is a way that makes it all happen and we can still get the two players (ILB & S) that we desperately need in. FA, then I'm all for it. Does he deserve that much money,........ I'm not the expert. I do know you can't pay one player two player money, just think if he gets hurt..... Which is always a possibility due to those wheels finally falling off.......!!!!!!!

Salute the nation

Yep and he turned that down last year.

Freeman's contract is a total of 41, the guaranteed is only 18 million.

Bell turned down basically 40 million guaranteed, and 60 million total. His guaranteed $ is Freeman's total contract.

Bell turned that down last 7 million more than Freeman last year. Do you just want to give him a blank check? AB is making what 1 million more than the next wr? Ben has never been the highest paid QB, hell Stafford and Garappolo are making nearly 10 million more per him

Bell played 15 games, the yardage and receptions are a big difference. More than double the receptions...DOUBLE!

So because Ben isn't making as much as two other QBs, that somehow makes Bell greedy? Got it. Quit comparing Bell to Freeman, it's not a fair comparison. The contract to compare Bell to is Peterson's extension from the Vikings in 2011. That was $14m/year. You are making my point by bringing up the fact that other QBs are making more than Ben, the value increases. Bell IS twice the player Freeman is and its not even close.

He turned down the last contract because of the guaranteed money, he wants 3 years guaranteed, and each year, his demands will prob go up until he signs a long term deal. Inflation, cap increase, etc etc.

If David Johnson hadn't got hurt, this could have been a historic year for RB contracts, still could be.

Just like i mentioned before at this point why cant ben take less to help keep Bell. Why cant he take less to help sign some defensive guys. Bell had made 16 million in his career, Ben had made 179 million. With the rules in place Ben had been able to play 14 years and wants to play 3 more. We all know the shelf life for RBs isnt as long but Bell is greedy for trying to get as much as he can..
