Who is eating crow on Dupree?

He finally listened to my coaching and gave up the long looping outside rush that took him 5 yds past the QB on every play and cut it short inside

Yes, I take full credit for his improvement
 
Great season so far, but he's been in the cross hairs before because he's deserved it. I am all about what he's doing because I thought he was a great grab where they got him for THIS reason. Take what you're getting and hope the "light" has come on.

Wish he would have listened to you earlier, but some players take longer to develop. Good job Spike!

I think part of it has to do with better coverage in the secondary and experience.

I previously posted a QB view of a Dupree pass rush. I am also glad he is doing better.

He's playing great right now, that can't be disputed but he didn't for the past 4 years. I still say the Steelers make a reasonable offer to him (hometown discount) but he will ultimately leave as someone is going to pay him big and the Steelers have to pay Watt, JuJu and Fitzpatrick coming up. I think for Bud and even Conner, they will have to take what the Steelers offer or they won't get another contract in the Burgh.
 
I never labeled him a bust but I also will not forget that the light came on in a contract year. So that is slightly concerning in relation to a new contract. And there is the fact he is aided by Watt receiving a lot of attention on the other side. Wouldn't prevent me from signing him, but I think the money you offer him has to keep all factors in mind.

I think last year BUD didn't get the credit due to his previous 3 years of play. His light started to shine last year and now this year it is brighter and brighter.

He may work himself out of PITTSBURGH due to numbers game of pay but I'm thinking they retain him at a relatively fair deal for both sides.

If you believe that he has played one good year out of five, then what kind of contract do you offer him? Do you even offer him a contract? He has been excellent this year. Last year he was ok, and his first three years were really meh. I would have a hard time handing him a lucrative long term contract. I wouldn't low ball him, but I wouldn't break the bank. Yet.

Does 10M/Y sounds like a win/win deal? I doubt we can go higher than that

I think he is making $9M this year, right? I wouldn't go much, if any, higher than that. Would hate to hand him a pile of money and he reverts back to 2nd year Bud. But I guess that is the chance you take with any player.

As others said last year was an improvement, this year is consolidation. I think his following years he will be an 8-11 sacks average plus solid run D and average coverage

I'd think base pay 8mil with incentives to add up to 12 million per, entice with bigger guarantee of base into lump sum. 4 year deal w/option of 5th.

you obviously havent been paying attention. he was asked to do more than "get qb" "get ball". he'd stated numerous times over the past two years he was asked to drop back in coverage more and more.
 
What I take from his progression is that he was what he was projected to be when drafted. Helluva athlete who needed time to learn (and under a suspect teacher). When they finally put him in a natural spot for him and let him do what he does best, he began to ball. Moreover, he is enjoying it. He isn't going through the motions out there...he is emotional and playing with passion. I don't see a guy who was lazy and likely to fo fat cat on the team. I think he is legit and I think if he hits FA he is going to get a nice deal from someone.

He may well end up being the poster model for player development. Fans want high draft picks to be HoF material day one. Generally doesn't happen. Sure, every year a couple of guys come out of the cannon hot, but most guys take some time. His was an extreme case of that slow development which makes him a great case study.

Bottom line. Hoot sees a guy who the light has gone on for. Hoot does not see a guy who will become complacent when that contract comes. and it is coming from someone.
 
I guess money is a big motivator for some. I’m glad he’s having a good season, he won’t be in Pittsburgh next year though.
