Who is eating crow on Dupree?

His first good year is year 5, and in a contract year, I hope they don't tag him or resign him.

If... and its a big if, dupree continues to show this high level of play, they absolutely should tag him with the non exclusive franchise tag... this gives them the option to match with compensation if someone overpays... and another year for him to prove it isn’t a fluke season...

That is likely a big discussion amongst the Steeler Illuminati.

I lean towards Bud.
Not going to happen, we don't utilize 3 DLINENMEN enough to justify signing Hargrave, especially after the money they tied up in Tuitt. Giving Bud would be a big mistake IMO. They need money to sign Watt and Minka down the road

I think we offer Bud a hometown discount kinda deal.

He probably won't take it.

Yeah I don’t want to see a long term deal with him just yet... I mean basically it’s going to come down to Watt or him at some point... id love to try to keep this d together for Bens return next season though... so again a non exclusive franchise or at a minimum a transition tag so if he gets a reasonable low ball offer we can match it, i am fine with...

Ive never had the dupree hate some have had here, however i am worried a bit that he will regress when paid

Its just so hard to judge because his development might have been boosted by porter leaving, or it could be that his biggest knock of being slow to diagnose plays has finally been solved by experience, or it could be that the play design is more to his strengths, or he could just be trying harder cause its a contract year

I just hope they have a better long term grasp of him by this offseason...

Sorry man, he's not playing at a second round pick level. He's playing at a first round pick level, that should be clear to everyone. Give credit where credit is due.

I would say TJ is playing at a first round level. Do you believe the two are equal?

They're both playing at a first round level, let's be thankful for that.

I forget where I saw it but there was a very nice video breakdown of Bud Dupree early on this season and the changes that he's made to his rush. Little things like adding power by driving the punch through improved footwork and cutting off the loop going round the tackle. It highlighted technique improvements - maybe Butler taking over as OLB coach has identified enough small things to make the difference..?

Either way it sucks that it's in a contract year as it makes him more attractive to everyone else just as he's finally getting it.

Jason Worilds got pretty good in his contract year too. I'd franchise tag him and see if he's good for a second year in a row.

I'm sure coaching is partially responsible so that even makes this point greater a fact. Bud partially was held back by coaching. Why was Joey Porter even hired and yet kept so long?

Salute the nation

Isn't the franchise tag worth something like 16M ? **** that

Next year you theoretically get a healthy Ben and Tuitt back... you don’t have a first and need a wr that is a deep threat... dupree will in theory may be the best available olb available and every young guy needs a one or two year acclimation period... the ben window is two years... any free agent olb worth getting would be pricey... unless you are certain someone is ready to produce right now, 16 million is 100% worth being a legitimate super bowl contender

Just as a point of reference ,, yes i know they are different positions.

After the Bears traded for Oakland Raiders pass rusher Khalil Mack on Saturday, they promptly signed him to a six-year, $141 million contract extension, a source informed of the deal told NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. Thats 23 million/yr for coach.

It's great to finally see the light come on. My point was TJ has played up to his draft position since day one, while it's taken Bud over 4 years and a 9 million dollar extension to finally start living up to the billing. You expect that out of your 3s and later not your 1s. I'm glad he's looking more like Worlids than Jones that's for sure. Hopefully they can keep him without overpaying.

One out of 5 productive seasons. Not really a quality return on a first round draft pick. There's no crow to eat.

Thing is that we would theoretically have that amount of money after cutting chickillo and cutting Barron. There would be no money left to maneuver other needs

The steelers always rework contracts if they need money. If they wanted to keep Dupree they could do it. With them doing everything they can to win right now I wouldn't be shocked if they re-sign him.

Dupree would be stupid to not see what's out there, especially if he hits double digits sack #'s.

I’d just rather it be a low year deal... restructure and extend some other guys if you need to... i think you make a push for 2020 and 2021 then dramatically retool... i think he should get a non exclusive tender though... let him see whats out there... if he goes at least there is compensation coming back...

Nobody is eating crow over Dupree. He’s playing for a contract so he’s paying attention to what he’s doing and actually putting in effort to beat his man.
