I don't think anyone thinks that... we can all discern good calls from bad better than you think... we always hated Arians' 3rd-and-goal end arounds, even when they scored. A stupid call is a stupid call.

You're flat out wrong on this one. Since we had no timeouts, kicking the field goal immediately was the right play. If we run a play and get tackled in bounds, we would probably have enough time to spike the ball but any penalty (illegal formation, false start etc.) that occurs while we try to line up and spike it would end the game (10 second run-off rule).
Tomlin made the absolute correct call to kick the FG, to many variables trying another play.

I was calling for a squib kick there as well, but kicking to Jones worked out perfectly. It took 8 seconds for him to get just past the 20 (or 25, I can't remember). What you don't want there is a touchback since no time runs off the clock.

Can't agree with that one. Given no timeouts and the state of the game, kick the FG there. Can't risk any other crazy **** happening.

Yep. Tomlin has more than his share of brainfarts but that wasn't one of them. If we'd been tied, there's some benefit, but not when we need that FG.

Take knee and spike the ball more risky than kicking off to a dangerous returner and allowing the refs another chance to screw us, guess we'll agree to disagree. Can't risk crazy **** happening there
The refs could screw us by calling an illegal formation or false start as we spike the ball! As you know the Bengals would be doing everything they could do to make the offense jump (yelling "hike", jumping around etc.).

And then that would be yet another penalty on their stupid D putting us 5 yards closer. Yeah, because illegal formation called all the time on clock kill...much more so than on kickoff returns. You're right, now I agree with your point
I see. When we're spiking the ball, the refs are incapable of making a mistake. But when we kick off to the Bengals with 14 seconds left on the clock, we are in danger of getting screwed by the refs.
Just grow up, admit you were wrong and we will all forget this 5 minutes later.

Know this, Pacman returns leading to a score and the crucify Tomlin threads would be everywhere. Luckily this did not happen, we escape with a win and on to Denver.

Also, take the thought of a possible offensive penalty out of the equation, with the emotions running so high after the hit on brown and Pac Man penalties, do you really want to line up and have our oline mix it up with their D again and risk one of our guys losing their cool and taking a fifteen yarder?
I've gotten on Tomlin for plenty this year, but this call was spot on.

My main complaint with Tomlin is generally in game management, specifically clock management here. The lynch mob would be calling for Tomlin's firing had things unfolded differently.
The call was ok, my point is just that there was probably a safer way to ensure victory. The only reason I could see to kick there leaving the time remaining would be if you feared a bad snap ( as Cope also pointed out) or icing your own kicker

Penalty calls on kick returns are nearly always on the return team. Why would we be afraid of that?

Majority are on return team, but facemask and unnecessary roughness vs. the D are still more common than penalty on clock kills

Tomlin should buy Lewis dinner. Otherwise, he blew a 15-0 lead. Or just imagine if the Bengals had the ball last and the score was score was 18-16, and they kicked the FG to send the game into over time.
The 2 point conversion in the rain ( which to be made no sense, go up 16-0 ) would have been haunting.
Steeler fans went to bed on cloud 8, but we were as lucky as a warden in a women prison with a fist full of pardons that recently arrested 50 strippers.
Again, with no timeouts in the waning seconds you have to call for the field goal right there. remember calling a play risks a ten second run off and even past that a knee loses you a yard and a run takes 5 to 6 seconds, getting set for a spike can take up to 12 seconds... on top of that a bad snap leaves you with a second chance if you are quick enough to reset or smart enough to throw it out of bounds. If you are afraid of the runback or hail mary pass, then you shouldn't be playing the game... those are both extreme long shots not worth risking for the picture perfect 00 on the clock as the ball goes through the uprights ending..... The same with being down a TD, you get the score as soon as you can... you don't dick around with time in hopes of a perfect ending... people complain about that stuff too much
Agreed. And if there was ever a game in which something insane could happen - like a brawl after Ben takes a knee to run off a few seconds of clock - if you mess around too much trying to be perfect, it was last Saturday night.

Not disagreeing with you Madinsomniac, but if it takes 12 seconds to reset for a clock kill from taking a knee when everyone knows the plan the HC, OL coach and entire OL have serious issues. Usually takes 12 secs or more after a 10 yard plus first down where everyone has to run downfield
There is no "getting lucky" when you win a playoff game. That's just loser talk from someone who is disappointed because he can't "unleash hell" on Tomlin today by starting 37 different threads which are all about the same thing.
This is totally meaningless because it doesn't take into account that 1) we would be totally ****** by a 10-second run-off 2) the odds of "extracurricular" stuff happening at that point are just too high to be messing around.
I've gotten on Tomlin quite a bit, but IMO, Cincy is lucky that they were even in this game, if the refs let the Shazier play where he crushed Bernard play out like they are supposed to, Shazier returns that for a TD and we are up 22-0, game over.
Wish the refs would swallow the whistle and let these plays actually play out. Any time there is a change of possession they have an opportunity to correct themselves with review. They do not have a chance to correct themselves when they whistle the ball dead. To me this is a huge missed point for all of the officials.

Al, yes there is and some honest fans can admit we got lucky. I just find an attack oriented thread after we won a playoff game to be foreign.
Luck is when something very unlikely happens, in our case, it was in three's. A fumble when everyone knew Cincy should have run out the clock and just held on to the ball. Then Back to back silly personal fouls that cost the Bengals 30 yards moving Boswell into range in a rainy day.
To have these three things happen at the very end of the game is just lucky, or if you prefer very unlikely. I can not recall one Steeler win where the team was more fortunate late in the game.
