When was the last time a QB looked bad/avg well into year 2, and still turned out to

Demote fichtner to QB coach, get a new OC and see how Mason does the rest of the season. He needs a QB coach to work on his progressions and pocket awareness.

The new OC has to do something like Haley did and design an offense revolving around quick reads and getting rid of the ball fast to protect the young QB from the pass rush that has been killing Rudolph

If he isn't the guy we will know by the end of the season and the FO will have the 2021 draft to look fo the heir to Ben.

Also the team needs to draft a top TE more urgently than WR. With Juju, DJ and Washington there's enough talent to work for the future, don't forget they are still so young, really green. Instead a Big target with skills in the middle of the field would elevate the rest of the O like another WR wouldn't.

We absolutely should have had a QB coach for Rudolph and actually we should have had one since Dobbs was drafted. The QB position needs its own coach just like you need someone in the booth for help in calling for play reviews but Tomlin refuses. Maybe they will get one after this season but by then it may be too late for Rudolph and, obviously Dobbs, but maybe not for Duck.

The thread says well into year 2. He was a 3rd stringer last year getting no reps and minimal practice throughout the year. This year he is now a starter but missed most of 2 games. You have to give him through this year and even into next year (if he even starts a game next year) to throw in the towel on him. Plus, this coming weeks game will be a write off as he will probably be missing his No. 1 and No. 2 WR's. He hasn't looked great but his receivers haven't looked good either. A lot of dropped balls even when he hits them in the hands. And, the play calling has been brutal this year.

I will admit I was hoping for more from him but I certainly am not writing him off yet.
He knows the offense though, yeah little reps, but he's had the playbook and system since day 1. He's been here for over a year and a half, he played a ton in the preseason, he's on his what 7th or 8th start.

Having the playbook and going out and executing it against vanilla defenses(preseason) is totally different then playing against regular season defenses and first string players. He didnt even get the majority of the backup snaps this summer because he split them with Dobbs cause they were competing for the backup job. He needs more time.

Here are some key stats:

31st in QBR
25th in QB rating
12th in TD%
29th in INT%
32nd in YPA
31st in YPC
30th in Net Yards per Attempt
7th in Sack %
34th in YPG
34th in 1st% (among QBs with at least 100 pass attempts)

Preseason, 3rd string reps or lack thereof in his 1st year and starting part way into the season are entirely different animals. He also was battling Dobbs for backup reps until final cut downs this year. So, realistically, he didn't practice that much with the 1st team until Ben went down.

With that aside, I don't care who the young QB is, coming into this shithole this year would be tough on anyone. We have no running game to speak of. On top of that, we've had many games without 2 of our top 3 RB's. Our o-line that was a strength is mediocre at best. We just recently think we found a No. 2 WR and he is a rookie. More dropped balls that hit the receiver in both hands than you can count. No QB coach. Countless injuries, including a concussion that kept him out 2 weeks. Terrible play calling and refusal to use the TE, throw short quick crossing patterns that work for every team, etc.. And, now, our top 2 WR's are probably out this week and missed big portions of the Clowns game. I could go on and on.

Sure, as I said, I was hoping for more but this year is a complete loss other than getting Minkah and getting some practice reps for guys that will be or might be on the team in the future. Hopefully, Ben will be back next year. Best case though, might be if Ben was ready around game 3 of next year. That way, we hopefully get to see an improved Rudolph after enduring this hell this year and maybe even with a QB coach. We will then have a good feel for what we really have. As I said in another post, Tomlin got a pass this year when Ben went down no matter what we the fans thought and Rudolph should probably be getting the same based on what I have outlined.
