Watt’s Up?

Stillwright,

It's possible. The Broncos did it not that long ago with a washed up Peyton Manning.

Even if you want an average defense, you have to pay some guys.

I can agree with that. What about a bad offense?

The cap has NOTHING to do with it. It is all about the guarantees monies. Just like Bell wanted more guarantees. Watt wants more. What do you think Fitz will want? Guarantees that is.
Hold on here, doesn't guaranteed money change how it hits the cap? It IS about the cap because the money would hit this year more than if they pushed it out to other years as salary. I am not sure how you think it isn't about the cap. It is all about the cap. How do they give him what he wants and still fit in this years number which is tight.

Steelers don't have the $$$$$ to pay Watt $50 to $60 mill guaranteed. Then turn around and pay Fitz large guaranteed money. Then Bush as you feel the Steelers will do. The Steelers wouldn't pay Bell what he wanted which was peanuts compared to what Watt will want but you see them laying large guarantees for 3 deals in the next three years. Um...OK.

If the Steelers aren't going to change their ways you can forgot about them ever seriously competing again because they won't be able to keep any of their start players. They have to adapt.

Unless something has changed recently, future guarantees do need to be put into escrow. So cutting Watt a check for a 25 million signing and putting a huge chunk of future guaranteed money into escrow might be financially straining. Especially If you have to make large commitments to several players. The Steelers and Raiders aren’t sitting on huge reserves of cash like the owners who have separate businesses.

This....Steelers simply don't have the $$$$$. The reason Raiders traded Mack was this exact thing.

breakdown of bosa deal
Current Contract. Joey Bosa signed a 5 year, $135,000,000 contract with the Los Angeles Chargers, including $102,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual ...

Guaranteed at Signing: $78,000,000
Average Salary: $27,000,000

offer 5 130 mill
Guaranteed 70 mill

eithier adapt or let someone with big pockets buy shares of ownership into the team if Art doesn't want to pay the rates of SB now.
our whole D is built upon watt blitzing want not pay that much switch to a 4-3 then because watt as a stand-up edge rusher shows he is the best now pay him, and he is better than joey as well.

Man you are always so positive about things. The Steelers have the cap room to pay them AFTER this year. They have always spent the max or damn close to it. I am not sure what the hell you are going on about.

we have the cap room to fit bush minkah and watt all at big deals if ben wants to play he again either take a 4-5 mill pay cut or does a back end 2-3 extension, Haden perhaps 2 years lot of dead cap money from AB comes off as well as what's left on Pouncey DD deals. lock up watt this year spend modest tier 2 fa draft a QB and develop the young CB that one can either replace Haden. A lot will depend on how the OL develops. next year you lock up minkah and the year after bush these are your 3 building blocks, despite how juju does let him walk and replaced by Chase that will open a full spot for James to be full-time slot in every set

Positive or negative has nothing to do with it. Money does. The Steelers pockets are not deep like the Jerry Jones of the world.

I said paying Watt 2 years salary guaranteed and that is still peanuts compared to what Bosa and others get. If they stick to their guns, they very well may lose arguably the best D player in the league who is heading into his prime.

If they can’t adjust their ways they also will never be able to keep a franchise QB (if they draft one) into a second contract.

I'm hoping this isn't a sign that we're about to repeat the mid-1990s when the market for top players basically exceeded what the Rooney's were willing to pay.

I doubt that's the case, but if it is, there is no new stadium on the horizon to put more money in their pockets this time around.

What is your point? If the contract fits within the Salary Cap they will pa it if it doesn't they can't no matter how deep their pockets are? I really don't get your point here. This isn't baseball and the Rooneys will spend to the cap, they can't spend more.

They don't have the capital in their bank account to put $50 to $80 million in an escrow for the guarantees. Or if they have it they don't want to pay that out. 🙄

Purely speculation on your part. Again I seriously doubt that is the reason for any of this. unless you have something to back that up. I call BS.

Is it speculation? Or am I simply going off of the history how the Steelers have run their franchise? Yep. Steelers in the past have handed large contracts but the guarantees were always very franchise friendly. So what is your reason the new Watt deal isn't finished?

Because they are trying to figure out how to make it fit with this years cap if they do guarantees like I said. Simple. If this were next year it would be done already as the cap wouldn't be an issue. If they give him large upfront money right now a portion of it has to hit this year. They may want to give him that money now but the current cap situation makes it hard to do and that makes it a salary cap issue plain and simple. They are having to try and work out a way to make him happy and keep cap compliant for this year.

So you are just speculating like me. Ok.

I think that was good drafting and good money management. Went to SB XXX in 1995

It really wasn't until after that Superbowl that they really started bleeding talent.

Though they kept winning for a couple years, there was this helpless feeling as a fan whenever a key player hit free agency, knowing they were probably gone.

No, it is a fact that they have to fit this in under the cap this year. It is a fact that this years cap is tight and next years is not. It is a fact that guaranteed money has to partially hit this years cap in normal situations. So factually whatever they do has to work with this years cap. Correct? The only speculation is if it is the guaranteed money that is the hold up. We both speculate it is, the only difference is why. I am speculating it is the above facts not that the Rooneys are somehow cheap.

No...you are speculating the reason why it isn't done. Just as I was.
