Update : Weddle signs 29 mil deal with Ravens

Here's my question. The Steeler window, realistically, is 3-4 years, the offense is SB caliber and the defense is not, more specifically, the 2ndary is not SB caliber. Even with Weddle's reduced production and age what gives the Steelers a better chance at winning the SB in the next 3-4 years, an experienced and not completely done Weddle or a rookie SS? IMO, it's Weddle, now, they can't break the bank for him, but he definitely fits in the window of opportunity. The 2ndary needs to be average, they just can't be bottom 1/3, IMO.

Papillon

But if you look at Troy the Steelers probably should have cut ties with him at 31 and not hope he gets better miraculously. Do we really want to bid with the Oaklands and other teams who need to spend to get their cap up or do we wait and see if what we think his price is worth and his demands fall in line. I personally don't see Weddle being that piece that drives us to the super bowl. Maybe if he was 27 I would be all in on signing him but at 31 I feel we can look elsewhere.

I am not saying a rookie but with signing Golden we don't need to sign anyone we don't feel is the right fit at the right price.

Well Sean Smith just signed with the Raiders. Hopefully that drops Weddle's price.

Weddle will prob end up in Oak. The Raiders are working on a deal.

Ju forgot Jarvis???

no but he improved even if it was slightly...... he needs to become a better pass rusher. I question if he can.... But nobody stunk up the place quite like Blake. And with Allen gone their is a need for a starter at both spots.

yeah we wont compete and overbid for Weddle.....

is a shame I liked him...

Weddle is way past his prime. His tackles dropped off 30% last year with no turnovers of any kind. At 31 he's not going to find the fountain of youth so I would prefer waiting or signing Tyvon Branch at 29 who when healthy is a very good safety and with us signing Golden we can limit his snap count or at least monitor it wisely. I would take Todman, Garvin, and Spence with Branch over Weddle.

Hmmm, then no thanks on Weddle. I hate signing FAs over 30.

All quiet on the Weddle front. Maybe bodes well for Pit as it seems he really is considering the offers in front of him instead of taking the money with Oak.

For those reasons, I say no to Weddle. It would be a bad move. Over 30, production already plummeted last year, no thanks. How many times have former great safeties went on to make a difference on a new team in their 30's? It's a short list, but the list of those who never played up to their prime after moving to a new team in their 30's is long. As great as Ed Reed and Sean Dawkins were for their org. teams (Ravens, Eagles) they were shadows of their former selves after leaving.

Yeah, he is looking to cash in and I don't want to be the team he breaks the bank on.

Steelers are in the mix with 3 other teams. 2 being Ravens and Cowboys brill look at rosters, schools, etc and pick two teams and negotiate. Will decide Monday

Damn. Beat me to it lefty

Well I HOPE we don't put ourselves in "cap hell", but we REALLY do need his caliber of play. Coin Flip

Salute the nation

Steelersdepot also says he's expected to make his decision Monday, one has to think it's between us and the Raiders, but honestly I think the edge might go to them, they have more cap space, he already lives in CA, and the Raiders are a team on the rise and Some expect them to win thier division this year.

If he really is looking at schools for his kids I think Raiders are out LOL
