The head coach search

God no, a twice fired/failed retread? A guy who failed on teams with every resource available to him? I’ll need a new phone because I’ll smash this one if this happens
I would be ok with McCarthy if they want a retread. Not my favorite, but I like him more than Flores.

Happier. It will be better. Better than we've had.

I dunno man, I think if the next coach manages only one playoff win in 9 years we’re gonna be calling for his head too!

And if that happens I’ll just turn to the music equivalent of “wait till next year” LOL

That concerns me, that the best guys will not come here because of money, or lack of, to put a quality staff together. I'm not saying Rooney is cheap, but there are rumors out there that he is with assistant coaches.

Salaries are out there
Not really rumors
They are what they are

Paying a better and more extensive support staff for a first time HC seems to just make too much sense.

The Steelers will have a cheap hire because it won't be a proven head coach. Hard to say ARII was cheap with the staff while making Tomlin one of the highest paid HCs in the NFL. Arthur Smith probably did pretty well as OC given his credentials as a former HC.

Ben Johnson was 5 year 65 mill as a first time HC and limited time as an OC, but he was a top candidate.

That’s the kind of experience cheap Art looks for, but not the price tag he’ll want.

So I guess if he wants cheap he’ll be waiting on the dance floor until everyone else has grabbed a dance partner and then he’ll choose to dance with the cheapest of the remaining “up and comer” dance partners.

This is a decision that costs several years of Art screws it up, and he’s been effing up the coaching staff for years. I’m hoping for the best but expecting the meh from the reactive one.

Just cuz Art overpaid Mediocre Mike doesn’t make him not cheap. Look what the rest of the very small staff made. Arthur Smith was a desperate departure from the norm actually making him a well paid OC as 6th highest paid OC in league.

7 second drops and long throws, Ben was making history early in his career for record length of completion average.

BEN would have also had the shortest career in history due to the hits, remember the OL play combined with holding the ball.

Salute the nation
3rd & short, empty back field... SACKED!!!

No White guys!
The Tomlin Fan Club gonna lose their collective **** if that happens.

That's what concerns me. Shula is probably the best candidate but he won't be the cheapest, and his price tag will go up the longer the Rams are in the playoffs.
If the Rams win the Super Bowl, fugghedaboutit.

Darnold led MIN to a 14-3 record last year
Led a new team to the 1 seed this year.

Starting to think maybe the Jets and Panthers were just horrid situations when he was there, maybe he needed some time too.

Given his last 2 years he’s definitely showing he deserves to be in the top QBs in the league convo.
Averaging 4200 30/13 with two different teams (1 year in both systems) is pretty good. Maybe next year we start talking about how great Darnold has become.

He’s better than anything we’ve seen in a LONG time
Not only all that about Donald., But he’s gonna have Super Bowl champion on his resume after this season also

Where can you find the Steelers assistant coach salaries?

I need AI expertise for this!

Rooney or Tomlin as Bobby McFerrin and the other 3 characters as Steeler fans!

McCarthy stopped by the office for a Primanti sammich and a cup of coffee. It wasn't really an interview.

This doesn’t surprise you guys right?
Y’all know the history of the Rooney family, correct?
If I’m not mistaken, the surname McCarthy gives a firm indication of being Irish
Catholic… and being a native Pittsburgher to boot!
Read the history of your favorite organization and how the Chief took favor upon players and coaches of Irish catholic descent over the years..
Hell he had a directive, even after he left running the organization, that he or those selecting players in the draft would select a player with an Irish Catholic surname sometime during the draft.
How do you think Rocky Blier became a Steeler? You all know Rocky, son of Irish immigrants, and Notre Dame football player. It was also the Chiefs directive to the team that no one take Rocky’s locker while he was basically incapacitated and told he would never play football again after being wounded serving-our country in Vietnam. No other owner in the league would’ve done this and kept Rocky on the team even after he couldn’t perform for the next year or two.
If it wasn’t for the Chiefs fondness of this fine young Irish Catholic man, we would’ve never had the honor of having Rocky as a proud member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, who continues to be a great ambassador to the organization in the entire city.

Not saying, this is the driving reason of the McCarthy interview, just saying sometimes the nut doesn’t fall far from the tree.

I think it is a waste of time to even bring him in, silly even.

Shula apparently has the league's lowest-paid defense and is still in the playoffs.
It stands to reason that he could great things with the league's highest-paid defense that did their usual one-and-done this season.
Possibly even...historic things.....
Not that you’re inferring this, but the highest paid doesn’t mean the most talented, although it should. Perhaps Omar overvalues players and the Steelers are strapped with bad contracts? I wouldn’t believe so given Omar’s reputation as one of the best in the league. I guess we’ll find out when we hopefully have a competent coaching staff.

Exactly! Total waste of time!
Probably just an obligatory type interview.
Pittsburgh guy, good NFL record, why not just bring him in for a talk.
No way they will hire a 62 year old twice fired HC.
As you know, it’s not their mo.

I think that Shades gets (got) what Shades wanted.

IMO, I don’t think it is any harm to just talk to him. Perhaps he may give an experienced perspective to Omar and Rooney whether or not they hire him. I doubt he would entertain being offensive coordinator

Man this team has some terrible contracts to deal with.
TJ Watt, DK Metcalf, Jalen Ramsey.
Have to try and clean some of these up.
I think they let Ramsey go. Maybe trade Watt…

I doubt Rooney allows anything that diminishes the chance of winning next year and I think they both stay unless they ask for a trade, even tho Rooney probably should

Ramsey would be ok as an in the box strong safety for a few more years, he takes too many chances to be a FS. Dude was getting torched late in the season

They’re bringing Flores in for a 2nd interview now, in person. Looks like they’ll probably be who they hire. Being the starters of the Rooney rule, I think they have to stick with a minority as HC.

I’d trade Watt. Probably only get a 2nd at best, probably a 3rd, but if you’re gonna do it now is the time while you have decent depth at edge.

See I don’t get that one bit! Why would they have to stick with a minority candidate when the rule states a team must interview a minority candidate?
Doesn’t say they have to absolutely hire a minority candidate but they must interview him.
I would hope that this is not their guiding light to hiring a coach, Hire the best candidate for ***** sake Rooney.
