The head coach search

After watch the Seahawks offense last night with Sam Darnold I'm all on board for Klint Kubiak as our Head Coach! Darnold is not a great QB and Seattle shredded a better than average NFL Defense!

Now that Robert Saleh is out of the PO, I hope he gets an interview. I will not let his time at NYJ derail what he has done in SF. He could bring an offensive guru like Mike McDaniels with him. He checks off a lot of boxes off.
Sell me on even interviewing Saleh. I know it's the Jets, I just can't ignore his 20-36 record, so I have zero interest in bringing him in. There aren't many retreads who performed that poorly in their first job who went on to success with a second or third team. Norv Turner, Mike Shanahan, and Pete Carroll (who was highly successful at USC). Typically, these coaches have been massive failures at multiple stops.

Romeo Crennel
24-40 Browns
4-15 Kansas City
4-8 (Houston - interim HC)

Dick Jauron
Bears 35-45
Lions 1-4 (interim)
Bills 24-33

Pat Shurmur
Brown 9-23
Giants 9-23
Eagles 1-0 (interim)

Todd Bowles
Dolphins 2-1 (interim)
Jets 24-40
Bucs 35-33

Norv Turner
Redskins 49-59-1
Raiders 9-23
Chargers 56-40

Mike Mularkey
Bills 14-18
Jaguars 2-14
Titans 20-21

Mike Shanahan
Raiders 8-12
Broncos 138-86
Redskins 24-40

Pete Carroll (97-19 at USC)
Jets 6-10
Patriots 27-21
Seahawks 137-89-1
Raiders 3-14

Before his firing, Jets had one of the best defenses in the NFL. When they fired him, their defense regressed dramatically and fell to 26th. He had a 2-3 record and then went on a tailspin. They obviously were an even bigger disaster this past season. He did pretty well in SF again, with a banged up defense beating the SB champs in the their house last week.
Some are fine with an aging Mike McCarthy that did nothing in Dallas but wont give Saleh an interview? Ok. . .

It sounds like he's a very good defensive coordinator.

The new coach has to settle the QB position first and foremost before they can contend. No small task.

There is some younger talent on offense and defense to build around, but there is going to be a lot of questions about the "big money" guys that could cloud the transition from Tomlin over the next year or two.

Heyward and Watt, in particular, moving on could create somewhat of a leadership vacuum the new coach will have to deal with.

Despite all that, the patience of the Rooney's is probably what makes the Steelers job as appealing as it is.

Unlike with many other teams, the next Steelers coach pretty much has zero chance of getting fired within his first few years, no matter how bad things are.

Obviously, he won't be guaranteed 19 years, but will pretty much be given his entire first contract to install the roster and system he wants.

Definitely. The new coach will have to solve a riddle left for him at the QB position. That will be paramount and a larger part of the reason Art should be looking to add an offensive HC. A coach that can be trusted developing Ben’s successor. Sad that seeking Ben’s successor is STILL a thing.

Zero worries about a leadership void. Watt and Heyward have not been bringing that anyway…so no loss can be made from them. If we shed their contracts and their lack of leadership that’s likely a win. Watt was paid for past production and Scam Heyward is at the end of the line (never was a leader tho).

The stability and loyalty offered is the best Art has to offer. He’ll likely be cheap in his hiring and putting together a staff. Prove me wrong Art! Your next smart move will be your first smart move in a while.

That concerns me, that the best guys will not come here because of money, or lack of, to put a quality staff together. I'm not saying Rooney is cheap, but there are rumors out there that he is with assistant coaches.

The Steelers will have a cheap hire because it won't be a proven head coach. Hard to say ARII was cheap with the staff while making Tomlin one of the highest paid HCs in the NFL. Arthur Smith probably did pretty well as OC given his credentials as a former HC.

I think it was more Tomlin than Art. The Steelers routinely made their stars the highest paid in the league. Tomlin was one of the highest paid in the league. If he wanted to go out and hire a top positional, is Art telling him no because of a few hundred thousand dollars? Doubt it. Remember, the Steelers created a new coaching spot when they hired Brian Flores and he was probably paid well.

Darnold led MIN to a 14-3 record last year
Led a new team to the 1 seed this year.

Starting to think maybe the Jets and Panthers were just horrid situations when he was there, maybe he needed some time too.

Given his last 2 years he’s definitely showing he deserves to be in the top QBs in the league convo.
Averaging 4200 30/13 with two different teams (1 year in both systems) is pretty good. Maybe next year we start talking about how great Darnold has become.

He’s better than anything we’ve seen in a LONG time

Chris Shula showing us how smart he is already.

Steelers Coaching Candidate Turned Down Browns Job

As Art Rooney II, Omar Khan and the Pittsburgh Steelers continue their search for a new head coach, it appears they don’t have to worry about one AFC North rival competing for one of their candidates.

Chris Shula, the grandson of legendary Miami Dolphins head coach Don Shula, has spoken to the Steelers, but hasn’t met with the Cleveland Browns, who, according to Mary Kay Cabot, were interested in him.

“Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula wound up doing five HC interviews—he met with the Steelers, Ravens, Dolphins, Raiders and Cardinals,” Albert Breer wrote Saturday on X. “He’d gotten seven requests. And the three Rams assistants (Shula, Mike LaFleur, Nate Scheelhaase) did a total of 11 interviews.”

The Browns also requested to interview Chris Shula on Wednesday. Despite his ties to Ohio — he attended Miami (Ohio) and started his coaching career with John Carroll — it appears he wasn’t interested in possibly succeeding Kevin Stefanski.

you are right, it could have been more on Tomlin. He liked hiring his buddies who would never move into HC if he stumbled. No coaching tree has always been odd to me. Other than Bruce Arians, but he took a OC position with the Colts then became a HC.

It was no mistake his best teams also had the best coaches. LeBeau, Arians, Haley, Munchak...I'd even throw Butler and Smith in there. Hiring guys like Fichtner, Canada, Austin, etc., not only would no other team hire them to be a coordinator, but some of these guys are out of football the moment they leave the Steelers.

Arians is Cowher tree, circa 2004; Tomlin was forced to keep him when he was hired.

Schefter says Ravens are interested in Saleh.

Make it so !!!

Please take him off the market before the Steelers can.

Ben loved Bruce.

7 second drops and long throws, Ben was making history early in his career for record length of completion average.

BEN would have also had the shortest career in history due to the hits, remember the OL play combined with holding the ball.

Steelers interviewing McCarthy, which is a surprise given everything Rooney said.
God no, a twice fired/failed retread? A guy who failed coaching the Packers AND Cowboys with every resource available to him? I’ll need a new phone because I’ll smash this one if this happens
