After watch the Seahawks offense last night with Sam Darnold I'm all on board for Klint Kubiak as our Head Coach! Darnold is not a great QB and Seattle shredded a better than average NFL Defense!
Sell me on even interviewing Saleh. I know it's the Jets, I just can't ignore his 20-36 record, so I have zero interest in bringing him in. There aren't many retreads who performed that poorly in their first job who went on to success with a second or third team. Norv Turner, Mike Shanahan, and Pete Carroll (who was highly successful at USC). Typically, these coaches have been massive failures at multiple stops. Now that Robert Saleh is out of the PO, I hope he gets an interview. I will not let his time at NYJ derail what he has done in SF. He could bring an offensive guru like Mike McDaniels with him. He checks off a lot of boxes off.
Local guy who had three 12-win seasons with Dallas. Resume on par with Tomlin, Harbaugh, Carroll, and Payton. I get the interview, but wouldn't hire him.Steelers interviewing McCarthy, which is a surprise given everything Rooney said.
If the new coach wins a playoff game sometime in the next 9 years then he will be better than Shades.
That should be enough time.
Before his firing, Jets had one of the best defenses in the NFL. When they fired him, their defense regressed dramatically and fell to 26th. He had a 2-3 record and then went on a tailspin. They obviously were an even bigger disaster this past season. He did pretty well in SF again, with a banged up defense beating the SB champs in the their house last week.Sell me on even interviewing Saleh. It sounds like he's a very good defensive coordinator. Before his firing, Jets had one of the best defenses in the NFL. When they fired him, their defense regressed dramatically and fell to 26th. Some are fine with an aging Mike McCarthy that did nothing in Dallas but wont give Saleh an interview? Ok. . .
the same can be said about Brian Flores, but I wouldn't be surprised if he's the guy.It sounds like he's a very good defensive coordinator.
The new coach has to settle the QB position first and foremost before they can contend. No small task.
There is some younger talent on offense and defense to build around, but there is going to be a lot of questions about the "big money" guys that could cloud the transition from Tomlin over the next year or two.
Heyward and Watt, in particular, moving on could create somewhat of a leadership vacuum the new coach will have to deal with.
Despite all that, the patience of the Rooney's is probably what makes the Steelers job as appealing as it is.
Unlike with many other teams, the next Steelers coach pretty much has zero chance of getting fired within his first few years, no matter how bad things are.
Obviously, he won't be guaranteed 19 years, but will pretty much be given his entire first contract to install the roster and system he wants.
Definitely. The new coach will have to solve a riddle left for him at the QB position. That will be paramount and a larger part of the reason Art should be looking to add an offensive HC. A coach that can be trusted developing Ben’s successor. Sad that seeking Ben’s successor is STILL a thing.
Zero worries about a leadership void. Watt and Heyward have not been bringing that anyway…so no loss can be made from them. If we shed their contracts and their lack of leadership that’s likely a win. Watt was paid for past production and Scam Heyward is at the end of the line (never was a leader tho).
The stability and loyalty offered is the best Art has to offer. He’ll likely be cheap in his hiring and putting together a staff. Prove me wrong Art! Your next smart move will be your first smart move in a while.
The Steelers will have a cheap hire because it won't be a proven head coach. Hard to say ARII was cheap with the staff while making Tomlin one of the highest paid HCs in the NFL. Arthur Smith probably did pretty well as OC given his credentials as a former HC.The stability and loyalty offered is the best Art has to offer. Happier. It will be better. Better than we've had.True. But will that make us happy?
I think it was more Tomlin than Art. The Steelers routinely made their stars the highest paid in the league. Tomlin was one of the highest paid in the league. If he wanted to go out and hire a top positional, is Art telling him no because of a few hundred thousand dollars? Doubt it. Remember, the Steelers created a new coaching spot when they hired Brian Flores and he was probably paid well. That concerns me, that the best guys will not come here because of money, or lack of, to put a quality staff together. I'm not saying Rooney is cheap, but there are rumors out there that he is with assistant coaches.

you are right, it could have been more on Tomlin. He liked hiring his buddies who would never move into HC if he stumbled. No coaching tree has always been odd to me. Other than Bruce Arians, but he took a OC position with the Colts then became a HC.I think it was more Tomlin than Art. The Steelers routinely made their stars the highest paid in the league. It was no mistake his best teams also had the best coaches. LeBeau, Arians, Haley, Munchak...I'd even throw Butler and Smith in there. Hiring guys like Fichtner, Canada, Austin, etc., not only would no other team hire them to be a coordinator, but some of these guys are out of football the moment they leave the Steelers.you are right, it could have been more on Tomlin. Ben loved Bruce.Arians is Cowher tree, circa 2004; Tomlin was forced to keep him when he was hired.
Schefter says Ravens are interested in Saleh.
Ben loved Bruce.
God no, a twice fired/failed retread? A guy who failed coaching the Packers AND Cowboys with every resource available to him? I’ll need a new phone because I’ll smash this one if this happensSteelers interviewing McCarthy, which is a surprise given everything Rooney said.
