The head coach search

They’re bringing Flores in for a 2nd interview now, in person. Looks like they’ll probably be who they hire. Being the starters of the Rooney rule, I think they have to stick with a minority as HC.

Obviously, I approve, though it is inevitably going to be criticized for all the wrong reasons.

Not surprised at all the Steelers want to spend more time with Flores.

I'd still be kind of surprised if he gets the job, though.

The best Black man for the job

Couldn't be because they sincerely believe Flores could be the man for the job, could it?

Not everything has to be an agenda.
I’m not suggesting it’s an agenda. Just don’t think he’s the best man for the job.
I like him as a DC but not as my HC. He did ok in Miami but I think this franchise needs a lot better than that at this point.

Flores has improved the defense at each spot he's been HC or DC. In Minnesota, he's recognized as one of the best DC's in the league as they've had one of the best defenses the past two seasons.

His defense helped Minnesota finished with a 9-8 record despite poor QB play. We saw similar results in Miami where subpar offenses with a lack of weapons and mediocre QB play (Fitzpatrick/Tua) led to 5-11, 10-6, and 9-8 finishes with no playoff appearances.

Over three years as head coach, his draft picks have played in a combined 3 Pro Bowls. Flores was the coach that traded Minkah Fitzpatrick.

My concern with Flores is that he's the tough guy version of what we've already had. He's who's proven he can have his defense carry a bad offense to a near .500 record and be a borderline playoff team. He's also shown to be a coach who has not elevated an offense.

Do I think Flores could come in and keep the Steelers non-losing streak going? Yes. Is he going to be a coach that modernizes the offense and the overall philosophical approach of the team? Eh, not sure about that.

The main guy no interest in. Mike McCarthy. Not a whole lot different then Tomlin in my opinion. Had HOF QB in his absolute prime. And a pretty talented team in big D. One title. And who did he beat.......

Whom ever it is they need to get a long term answer at qb.

6 opportunities 0 playoff wins. We actually want that to change in Pittsburgh not continue.

It would just feel too much like what we've been watching for the past 5+ seasons.
Exactly. For me I only only only care about winning playoff games and being competitive to having a chance at more. I only want ahead coach that can keep up in this new NFL a young bright mind. Someone that has wowed people with his X and O ability and leadership.

How fair is that, though?

Just look at this season. The Vikings were 7th in scoring defense and 26th in scoring offense.

Seems like Flores more than did his part to contend. It was his wonder boy boss's side of the ball that failed the Vikings this year.

I think as a DC what you say has some merit.

But as a HC he changed coordinators didn’t win playoff games . Some of that was on the Dolphins owner and some was on him.

It is fair to question it with 6 opportunities. It is also fair to question his head coaching ability . Just because he can be a decent DC doesn’t mean that will ever transfer to being a top HC. And if he is a good HC? We want better than good right? We want the opportunity for greatness.

I get the sense if they go with a DC, they'll continue to focus financial resources and draft picks on that side of the ball while we try to watch an offense out of the stone ages.

I am hoping a new coach sways that outdated approach.

Heard from a friend that the Steelers are talking to Mike McCarthy AND Aaron Rodgers. That would be an unmitigated disaster. Hope it's a false rumor.

I'd rather roll with Skylar Thompson and Flores, if I had to choose. That will be sure to get Steeler fans excited with MM and AR. ZZZZZZZ.
