Steelers vs. Bills game day thread

Jordan Berry, Steelers Digest player of the week...LOL. Anyways, I hope he beats out Wing. Wing has a good leg but is really inconsistent with it. Looks like we are going to need big kicks to help out this sorry *** defense.

Do we have any scrub receivers we can trade to Green Bay? Cobb just busted his shoulder, so they don't have anyone to catch Rodgers passes. Maybe if we put lifts in his shoes, we can convince them that Dri is really a receiver.

Family reunion today. Didn't get to see the game. It was pretty bad eh?

Damn .... maybe I'll try to avoid the replay on NFL Network then. Already too much bad news today. Go to reunion to find out that my uncle has been in critical condition for a couple of days and my "aunt" didn't think it was important enough to tell anyone. Big hulabaloo there.

sorry to hear that, hope he recovers

Vick looked decent, three days of practice with a new team and he's better than Jones already.
Defense looked a little shaky in the first half and fell apart in the second half.
Another kicker got hurt.
Durpee hurt his foot but it's not expected to be serious.
Basically the preseason predictions that the offense would be fine and the defense would look like **** came true.

Sorry to hear about your uncle.

I tried to watch the whole game and it was tough. The defense looked pitiful. Offensively Martavius Bryant was a 1 man show. Michael Vick is a solid #2 who can win you a few games if Ben gets dinged. Really concerned about the kicker. Does NOT look good.

If this Defense doesn't man up we are going to have to score at least 40 pts a game to be competitive and we all know that isn't going to happen. As I see it right now, Fright Nite in Foxboro.

Buffalo had just 3 incomplete passes all game.

one of the worst pass offenses in the league, missing their top 3 WRs and their 4th best was injured in the game, looked like the greatest show on turf.

I get it that they are trying some new schemes but this "new" scheme is the cover 2. It's pretty much the most basic coverage and our safeties act like they never heard of it. You can go watch high school kids play a cover 2.

No Shamarko, you can't try to jump that curl route, you have to cover a deep half.

Mike Mitchell - clean the sand out of your vag and get out there.

Jarvis is a waste of a roster spot. He is lost of he finds himself in space. His pass rush is nearly non existent and shows up only when the OT makes a mistake. Jarvis either runs himself out of the play past the QB or he just gets engulfed at the line with no push.

If Archer can't win a return job then what good is he? They keep forcing him out there on offense but his speed doesn't translate. He has no vision as a runner and he goes down so easily.

I always hated Cover 2. Just saying. It works when you have a good secondary. Well...the steelers don't have one of them right now

maybe if they took that $60M they gave Cam Heyward and bought a secondary it would have been a different story

I get that the cover 2 is looking awful but does the team really have a CB that can play man? Say what you want about Ike taylor but in his prime he could play one on one against the opponent's best WR leaving the safety free to help everywhere else.

The scheme won't hold without good pass rush (like probably any other scheme)

Jarvis had a solid game against the Packers. Maybe not as solid against the Bills, but other factors like poor execution of the cover 2 with players being out of position contributed to the loss. And it's time to insert big Dan in the middle and make McClendon his backup, giving up too much run yardage.

Cover 2 also helps when your best so called safety, Mitchell, isn't injured all the time. "Injured" all last year and now during the camp we need him to gel with Shamarko and he has missed pretty much all OTA's and camp. He better show something or he needs to go also.

OUCH!!! I have only one hope, preseason. Shows more and more not Dick's fault, no support for defense and now we are in for a long one.

The cover 2 is talent driven more than other schemes (IMO). Really it only works if you have very strong secondary play (not as much the DBs but both safety positions need to be on point), consistent pass rush, and a player like Derrick Brooks to own the middle of the field from 5yds to 25yds. The Dungy era Bucs could play it because they had such a long era of sucking that they piled up some exceptional talent that was ideally suited for it. The 70s era Steeler were similar in that they sucked so in the late 60 and early 70s that they started piling up talent and used it to dominate. The Bears ran it with Urlacher in the middle for a while.

Our secondary stinks, we have a very inconsistent/non-existent pass rush, not even going to start on safety play; but, Shazier does remind me of Brooks. Not saying he is going to be an 11 time pro bowler and first ballot HOF player like Brooks, but he has that similar sideline-to-sideline skill set.

The other thing that bothers me is that our version of the cover-2 shell does not make any attempt to jam the WRs at the line. We still play off in an obvious zone, which makes no sense. Perhaps this will change when the season starts but I don't think we have the players to run it so I doubt we see that much of it.

Pretty much all of that.

Jarvis was going against a 2nd string RT moved to LT when he played the Packers. He was stoned against a real LT in the Bills game.

I'm watching the game now.

I am reading a lot of complaints, as usual, about the defense, but so far that same defense (w/o Timmons) held the Bills to 13 points in the first half (5 minutes left).

Yes, there we're mistakes. But guess what - Mike Vick was awesome in his debut.

So how is that going to help this pathetic defense from giving up 35 points a game?

The offense scores at least 36. Which they'd better. Every week.

Not that it would have mattered much. How was the Bills completion not overturned . The receiver bobbled the ball twice clearly with the 2nd bobble definitely being out. You can't see that in a review ?. What is this, the Mickey Mouse referee league.
