Steelers sign Gradkowski to one year deal

Nearly all available backups stink. The better ones go to teams with weak starters because they hope to play. If you were any good, why would you come here, instead of going to Cleveland, or Philly?

True, which is why I'm confused by Boykin and Vernon Adams choosing to sign with the Seahawks. Doesn't make much sense if you want a real shot.

As UDFA's I imagine they are more concerned with actually making a roster rather than being a prospective starter. According to ESPN and the Seahawks website Russell Wilson is the Seahawks only Quarterback, which means Boykin and Adams probably have as a good a shot at making the roster at Seattle as anywhere else.

So he signed for the vet min, and that means that any better option can still be brought into the mix. Now, ahead of OTAs, the Steelers have 3 QBs, and will probably add another arm.....I think we all understand that without Ben the big prize is gone. When that is the case, what is the point of not playing for better draft position?

If Gradkowski is healthy, he will move back to No. 2 ahead of Jones. He gives us the best shot to win games unless Jones improves a lot on last year.

Sad news .... sad news

Wilfred saying good bye to the Tenth Doctor (Tennant), neither of my eyes were dry I can tell you that!!

Who would be better? They aren't going to spend the money to get a guy like Ryan Fitzpatrick. And if they aren't getting a guy like him then they are picking among guys that are on the same level as Gradkowski, but Gradkowski knows the offense which makes him better than anybody else they could have realistically gotten. Unless they can get Matt McGloin because he's awesome.

Matt Flynn had a 500 yard passing game 4 years ago, that is worth a few million.

Landry won the game against the Cardinals that were NFC championship game team. He played ok against a pretty good KC team and lost. I think he is pretty standard fair for NFL backups. It seems to me that Ben likes to have a veteran journeyman guy that he gets a long with in the room. Gradkowski has replaced Charlie in that role.

Next year we will be looking for two backups again.

At one point Tommy Maddox was a backup that played well enough to work himself into a starter role.

I suppose he'd be your guy.

Batch was very good before he became old, very old.

By the last few years, he had a pure noodle arm out there. Hard to win with a BB gun for an arm. But I will give him this: His last win vs. Balt. was epic. I will always remember him for that win.

I don't think people are factoring in how important it is that gradkowski knows the offense. There is no other backup QB available who does. They have a lot invested in Landry and last year he did start to show a bit. I expect Landry to once again get tons of reps in camp because Ben doesn't need them.

Bring in a new veteran backup and you have to teach him the offense and give him a bunch of reps. That defeats the purpose of having a vet backup.

With Landry and Grad, the Steelers have one of the best backup QB situations in the NFL. Go find a better situation, and then see what that team is paying. Eagles and Rams may have better situations on paper but look at the cost.

For once, I have to agree with you. That was a pretty great moment.

WTF, he knows the offense yet has never thrown a regular season pass for the Steelers and his career stats are beyond awful. Funny it didn't take Ryan Mallett long to learn the Rats playbook and destroy us last year. The Bears with Hoyer are much better in the backup department than us as are most teams. relying on garbage like Jones and Gradkowski to win a game without Ben is a huge reach.

When your playbook is 5 steps, lob and pray, it doesn't take long to learn it...

Yep, have more faith in a great young arm like Mallet than the piece of garbage Jones and the awful Gradkowski, more of the same old same old.

Yeah, but Mallet is a whiny lil *****, so there's that

It is what it is.

No one else out there really worth a backup contract. Hoyer signed for $2 million. Gradkowski averaged $1.65 million over his last deal.

Personally, I would have rather had Hoyer at $2 million than Gradkowski at $1.5 million but we have to wait and see what Gradkowski ended up signing for.

I have all the confidence in the world Grado has plenty of familiarity with the playbook and is super tight with Ben. That's great. What we don't know, is whether or not he can still throw a lick. I presume playing QB in the NFL is not like riding a bike, where you can not do it for two years then just step right onto the field. So that's my prob with signing Grado, is that makes Landry Jones the clear-cut back up to Ben. Which is not a particularly comforting thought.

I think it's waaaaay to early to consider this situation settled, as far as which QB's may or may not be available when teams start trimming rosters.
