Steelers sign Gradkowski to one year deal

WTF, he knows the offense yet has never thrown a regular season pass for the Steelers and his career stats are beyond awful. Funny it didn't take Ryan Mallett long to learn the Rats playbook and destroy us last year. The Bears with Hoyer are much better in the backup department than us as are most teams. relying on garbage like Jones and Gradkowski to win a game without Ben is a huge reach.

If I bother to analyze, I am sure lots of teams have better back ups than Jones and Grad. Bottom line, if Ben is out, this is a .500 team at best with those two bums.

...if Ben is out, this is a .500 team at best with those two bums.
For whatever it's worth that's probably true for 90% of teams that'd lose their starting QB. Still doesn't mean we shouldn't try to improve our back-up QB situation.

I have all the confidence in the world Grado has plenty of familiarity with the playbook and is super tight with Ben. That's great. What we don't know, is whether or not he can still throw a lick. I presume playing QB in the NFL is not like riding a bike, where you can not do it for two years then just step right onto the field. So that's my prob with signing Grado, is that makes Landry Jones the clear-cut back up to Ben. Which is not a particularly comforting thought.

I think it's waaaaay to early to consider this situation settled, as far as which QB's may or may not be available when teams start trimming rosters.

Normally, I'd agree, but this is the Steelers. We know how they operate. Odds are, we ARE looking at our entire QB unit, as is, right now. As someone else mentioned, odd how other teams can sign a new QB and within a week or 2, they are up to speed enough to run the offense. Why do ONLY the Steelers think you need YEARS for players to "get the system down" on both sides of the ball????????????????????????

well, maybe if our QBs' communication systems didnt turn off as required, unlike those of your familiarity in the upper north east

When your playbook is 5 steps, lob and pray, it doesn't take long to learn it...

Well, I don't know if that is an indictment on the Ravens O or on our D of 2015. Sad fact is, the 5-step-back-throw-deep-and-hope was all they needed to beat us. Losing that 2nd game to the, as we were fighting for our playoff lives, was really pathetic. How many other teams did they beat all year? Three?

PoPs,

That play is merely a look to the ref and give me the flag type play. Shimmer down there bud. Enough to beat us? Sure. But you make it sound so negative

He's a better option than the 2 from last year at least.

As long as he still has an arm. I like Gradkowski. Pittsburgh guy. Fun demeanor. But the Steelers need a quality backup at the QB position. Ben is not getting any younger and with his style of play, he really took a beating early in his career. Steelers have a couple of championship runs in them with Ben at the helm. Tomlin and his crew need to play their cards right

Here's the list of NFL QBs. Go ahead and find me these awesome backups all these other teams have. Gradkowski and Landry are better than most.

I have no idea what it is that people see in Gradkowski, even as a backup. The guy sucks. First of all, he's a loser. He's 6-14 as a starter. He's got a career QB rating of 65.8, absolutely horrendous for this era. His completion percentage of 52.9% is downright embarrassing. His YPA of 5.7 is laughable, and that number wouldn't even have smelled the bottom of the list of qualifying quarterbacks in 2015 (Nick Foles was #34 and last on the list at 6.1).

It would be a lot easier to tell you who I WOULDN'T take from your list before this clown. In fact, I'd take the two rookies in Seattle (Adams and Boykin) in a heartbeat before Gradkowski, and they're not even on your depth chart. At least there's a chance they might one day amount to something other than a pile of **** who is somehow still collecting an NFL paycheck.

not that it matters a whole lot, but Keenum is the #1 for the Rams, not Foles (at least until Goff takes over)

I see him as a vet with some experience that can come in a win us a game or two if Ben goes down for a game or two or three. Maybe four. As far as his numbers.....I am willing to be bet/hope with his current team he will be able to put up some better numbers than those teams he compiled his career stats from. Not too many QB's have winning records from any of those teams in the same time frame that he has been playing. So while you might want to throw all your chips in on a rookie QB on a SB caliber team if our star QB happens to go down for a bit of time. I will go with Grad. A Vet with bad stats from horrible teams.

I think the reason why we like Grad, is he does really well in preseason games and training camp. With the talent on this team, you don't have to be a great QB to be successful and get wins. Just ask Vick and Landry.

While there is some value to a veteran presence, I believe Landry Jones (now in his fourth season with the Steelers) qualifies with enough experience to come in and win a game or two. He showed as much last year.

Gradkowski's numbers in the season he started 11 games were dwarfed by Tim Rattay's:

Completion % 60.4 vs 54.0
YPA 7.4 vs 5.1
TD:INT ratio 2:1 vs 1:1
QB Rating 88.2 vs 65.9
Record 1-1 vs 3-8

Tim ******* Rattay.

In Gradkowski's "best" season, he did manage to compile a whopping 80.6 rating and outperform JaMarcus Russell, one of the worst starting quarterbacks in the history of the NFL. And that was thanks in large part to the anamolous game he had against the Steelers, which I suppose is what everybody around here chooses to remember.

At least half of those teams have better backups. Jones is flat out just awful. If it weren't for the Steelers need to protect their ego, he'd be out of this league. Bruce is a career joke. We might as well still have Leftwich and Batch as our back ups.

I'm not sold on Landry either and that is why Gradkowski is necessary. A veteran who knows the system is an absolute need.

Go ahead. instead of just saying half are better, throw out the specific name that the steelers should have somehow acquired this year instead of Gradkowski

Gradkowski has 20 starts under his belt. You can't just discount that. He has played well in this league in real games. Most of that list has no starts.

The steelers did want to draft a QB this year but it didn't happen. If they drafted one, i think they would have traded Landry away and signed Grad as a veteran.

...With Landry and Grad, the Steelers have one of the best backup QB situations in the NFL...

You been listening to a lot of Chris Brown lately???

of that list, id only want Glennon, McCarron, Mallet or Allen. Neither of the last two over Grad. Maybe one of the other two.

Nope. Landry would of been the back up and Grad would not of been resigned. Colbert said as much in an interview on SN radio right before the draft. And if Landry sucks as much as everyone says who would of traded for him?

Landry stank it up though. He had a promising game against AZ then gradually declined after

He doesn't break the budget and can manage a game. That's all
