Steelers select Dri Archer in Round 3

Well, I'm not sure how to respond to this topic anymore because the only alternate explanation to the evidence presented on both sides is...

Either our scouts/coaches and FO guys are complete idiots for NOT seeing the things you did/do OR you can see them better from your living room?

I am sure they can see it better and do a better job. They never miss. They never take smaller runningbacks and watch them fail. Ever. Not in the 3rd or in the 5th.

I do know this though, prior to announcing the selection, the Steelers PR people handed out bios in the press room for Martavis Bryant. It was on twitter that they did this, so the initial call was to take Bryant in the 3rd. Someone banged on the table and they changed course. Maybe it was a scout, maybe it was Haley, maybe it was Tomlin, but I would be willing to bet that all it takes is ONE guy to scream loud enough to get a guy they may not be completely sold on.

Doubt it? They had Adams OFF their draft board and one letter and interview later, he was taken in the 2nd round. He went from "Do Not Draft" to the 2nd round off a letter and an interview. They also drafted Ziggy Hood, Limas Sweed, and a bunch of others that failed, but hey, they are flawless and I am just some schmuck that cannot see ****. I get it.

Very interesting info TMC...wonder who was the table pounder? My guess it was Haley with Tomlin agreeing...

Also, kind of off-topic, I belive Ziggy Hood will do well with his new team...In the right system, I think this guy will show the upside the Steelers projected when they drafted hiim.

Or as a collective they decided to take Archer and take a chance that Bryant lasted til their next pick. Thinking that Archer wouldnt. Maybe they got wind someone would take Archer. Who knows????

Well then that team would be going to the SB instead of us. -sarcasm intended

All things considered and just from being around here a long time, I would venture a guess that TMC spends damn near as much time researching and doing homework as NFL scouts do. And considering that, he still doesn't attempt to act like he has been 100% correct on every projection he has ever made. That right there along with the work he puts in, is why he has a lot of credibility IMO. He doesn't feel the need to puff himself up and pretend he's infallible.

Well, I think that the drafting by the Steelers is showing some improvement. Last year we had long threads about drafting a guy in the first round that we should not have drafted and there were lots of folks on board with a different selection. This year after a bit of study it took till the third round before we had the arguments over the pick. See definite improvement. As to the corners after the first three or four corners were picked it did not seem like there was much left that was special to me. I am basing that on what was posted on here. So there may have not been much value there. I am not sure after looking at what was available that I would rather have had a corner that was available over our first two picks. Archer is a wild card and odds are against him, however if he works out nearly as useful as the person that wanted him thinks he will he could be special. He just might be something we benefit from every game. In reality had he been our fourth rounder it could have been him vs a player that has a slim chance of playing. As it stands we had a guy drop to us in the 4th that looks better than we could have hoped for. I do know what tight ends were available to us at the bottom of the third and it seems the guys that were looking like the could be real good for us were already gone. The corners had been hit heavily in the earlier rounds. So we had the option of an additional wide out or a different running back. It looked like everything that was left was a bit of a project as all of them had some big things that would need to be improved on, again that is from the discussions on here. Also every pick we have from the third on seems to be a project for someone on the staff and it looks like we got one for nearly every coach.

No it doesn't. I guarantee you Archer would rather be hit by another 173 lb player than by a 230 lb player.

I think some of you fail science class and probably watch no football. It's like saying a 4.8 guy can run just as fast as a 4.2 guy.

It's mass time acceleration, that's why a bullet can kill you, but a big old rock thrown by someone just hurts a bit. If the 250lb guy AND the 230 are moving at the same speed, then yes, the force is greater, based on weight, otherwise it's not.

I'm rooting for Archer to hit the ground running and make an impact in multiple roles on O and special teams. Can't wait to see this kid turn on the afterburners...

The difference on the field of a 4.2 guy and a 4.7 guys is miniscule. You're looking at hundredths of a second in 40 yards. The fact is that Archer getting hit by anybody on an NFL field isn't going to be good. Archer even look afraid to take a hit. Here is a 189 pound CB coming up and Archer looks like he wants to hide... he just drops the ball. He isn't even hit that hard:

If the Steelers hit on 2 of their top 4 picks I am happy. 3 of 4 and I am ecstatic... If this pick falls by the wayside so be it. its a high high risk pick, IMO, but if Bryant pans out I really don't have that big an issue with it. Haley is a smurfaholic, he needed his fix... I get it...

Running back/wide receiver Dri Archer didn't have a lot of options coming out of high school, but things are different now.

There was a time when Dri Archer wasn’t sure if he was going to have the opportunity to play college football, let alone make it to the NFL.

Coming out of Venice High School in Florida there wasn’t a lot of interest from colleges, no recruiters banging his door down offering him scholarships.

That was until Kent State came along. And they pretty much waited until the last minute to give Archer what would be the opportunity of a lifetime.

“Kent was the only school that gave me a shot and chance to play at the collegiate level,” said Archer. “I obviously took it and ended up having a great career.

“Kent came on pretty late. I took a visit like in January. Everything happens for a reason. I took what they offered me and ran with it.”

He ran all the way to the NFL, thanks in part to his blazing 4.26 40-time that he turned in at the NFL Combine.

Archer was drafted by the Steelers in the third round, going from a high school kid that nobody seemed interested in, to a running back/receiver that could have an impact on offense and special teams in Pittsburgh.

“It’s a great feeling,” said Archer. “I worked for this for a long time. It’s been a dream of mine since I was a little kid. To be able to reach my dream is a great feeling. All I can thank is the man above.”

Archer’s size, 5-8, 173 pounds, is what he feels deterred some of the bigger colleges, but it never deterred him. He caught 99 passes for 1,194 yards and 12 touchdowns in 21 games at Kent State. He ran for 2,342 yards on 325 carries with 24 touchdowns and added four kickoff returns for a touchdown.

“I used nobody else offering me a scholarship as a chip on my shoulder,” said Archer. “I always play with a chip on my shoulder and try to show the world what they missed out on. Kent was lucky enough to have me on their team. There are always going to be people that doubt you. They tell me I am too small. I am too short. I am not going to be able to play college football and I did that. They told me I wouldn’t make it to the pros and I got drafted. I just play with a chip on my shoulder now to try and prove everyone wrong.

“I like being told those things. It motivates me. It makes me want to grind harder and try to motivate myself.”

That fumble is almost funny considering it wasn't even on the ball side. Being small is one thing, having fumblitis is another.

If that is the same one I saw earlier it looked like he did not even get a chance to secure the toss before he was hit. Most folks in the nfl would have had a hard time with that one, ball and defender at nearly the same time.

Is Dri Archer the most controversial draft pick in Steeler Nation history? I've been here since the 90's and don't remember this much discussion (mostly negative) on a pick - Kordell yes, a draft pick no.

You don't remember the Pete Gonzales thread?

Idk people roasted about Jones last year and are still going..

Can't be the case. He took three steps, tucked the ball by his side, then turned his hips to get ready for the hit.
