Steelers pick Edmunds in round one

the last time Coach **** himself over us taking a safety in the 1st, we turned out pretty good.

I obviously did not do my normal scouting on defensive players this year (just felt like a chore more than enjoyable so I quit mid way through the process). But here is some film on him:

Here are some of my thoughts, positive and negative:

Positives:

1. Exceptional athlete that will not be "outclassed" physically by players in the NFL. Has a well of athletic ability to fall back on if he makes mental mistakes.
2. Young and still growing into final product. This has been a growing M.O. of the Tombert regime to select very young junior prospects. In fact, when they FAIL to do this is normally the bigger busts (Hood and Jones for example). Can be molded into what Tomlin wants.
3. Position versatile and might even move to linebacker in the long run. Allows "big nickle" to almost be run as our base defense if Tomlin/Butler choose.
4. Good open field tackler when playing downhill. Can make plays in the intermediate range of the pass game. Good length and hand size.
5. Pedigree and comes from family that knows what being professional athletes is all about. Will not be intimidated by the stage. Will not rest on laurels of just "being drafted and getting that first paycheck". Competition from brother, who is fellow first round pick, should be good motivation.

Negatives:

1. Not the sum of his athletic talents on film. Left some plays on the field in my opinion in that West Virginia tape. Slow to read/react plays down the sidelines when playing the deep half and despite speed gets there a step too late.
2. Might lack the size/physicality to be moved to linebacker.
3. Feels like a "forced" pick by the Steelers based on need/desire to replace Shazier's athleticism and role in the defense more than best football player available on the board. The decision to pick more of a strong/box safety over equally talented free safeties raises question marks to me about how Tombert envisions this defense next year and their faith Sean Davis can be a true center fielder (which I don't think he has done to date) or will that responsibility fall to mid-level free agent Burnett?
4. Consensus in "draftnik" community seems to be this is a reach pick and Edmunds film/talent was better suited as a round 2/3 picks than the #28 overall pick. Should the Steelers have traded back out of the first round and maybe still been able to get this player?

Overall, it's typical Steelers. Underclassman/young? Check. Slight reach? Check. Stay in their slot and don't trade/move around? Check. Need has strong influence over pick? Check.

Will be interested how rounds 2/3 work out tonight. You have to assume Edmunds, with this type of athleticism, will get his chance on the field with Tomlin (for good or bad). But rounds 2 and 3 are where the draft is often won/lost in the long term because finding production can really boost a roster.

After sleeping on it, I still give the pick a B/B+. He fits an area of need and is very versatile. He played corner and can play both safety positions along with a hybrid LB position. I think that versatility is why they had him rated so high. That and he played through an injury last year and still looked good on tape. And, like Watt, he comes from a great NFL blood line. So, welcome to the best NFL franchise on the planet!

I’m excited about this kid. I think he has tons of upside and fits Butlers scheme diverse system. The kids going to play FS, SS, ILB and CB depending on what the defense needs from him. That’s exciting.

Now I can’t wait for tonight because the Steelers have 3 more picks. My guess is the Steelers go offense in the second then double down on defense in the third.

Round 1-3? Wow Walter went out on a limb there. No one here had Edmunds rated over top safeties disused. Which web site had him in round one without a range to round three?

Was Terrell Edmonds even in Mayock’s top 100?

I did say I liked him for round 3.

To someone who is so “in tune” with all the draftniks thoughts you didn’t even realize Edmunds was in Mayock’s top 100 at 73.

He was obviously their #1 available DB with their pick.

I think Edmunds strong character & work ethic pushed him up their board.

The Steelers love strong charactered individuals and Terrell has tremendous football character. Justin Fuente could not stop talking about him:

“I think athletically he’s just different. He’s an incredibly hard worker but I’ve never seen a guy that can’t get tired. He doesn’t. We know about the family, just great people in general but there’s just something different about him,” Fuente added about the middle Edmunds brother, “his stamina, his strength, his work ethic, his intelligence. He’s pretty special. When they go run in the summertime and we go do things and you’re playing games and he’s covering punts and playing safety and covering kickoffs, he’s the fastest guy out there every single time, every single rep, it’s pretty fun to watch. He can do about whatever he wants really. He’s pretty talented.”

after a night to think about it, all I can think of is that they felt that hadn't he injured his shoulder this kid was a top 20 pick so they are betting on getting a stud that was affected by an injury (you have to be a serious competitor to play Safety with a bummed shoulder).

The guy also has good instincts and active hands, he's a playmaker with athletic abilities (unlike Dupree coming out of college who had the athletic part but not the technique and awareness) giving a ready to contribute player to the team D. Let's hope he delivers or KC and Tomlin will be bashed for a long time

Will be interesting to see if he can make the transition and be a difference maker for the Steelers. Being from Virginia and an ACC fan I am excited to he's a Steeler.......but using their 1st Round pick on him...not that excited.

Strengths
One of the team leaders on defense
Impressive combination of NFL size and quick-twitch movement
Quick change of direction
Former cornerback with sudden burst from lateral transitions
Has size and cover talent to carry pass-catching tight ends around the field
Reliable hands to take it away when in position
Desired pursuit speed as chase defender near the line
Looks for work as tackler
Plays with energy and smarts
Handles contain when called upon and lets teammates flow to the ball
Has size and speed to offer immediate help on kick coverages
Athletic bloodlines from father to mother to siblings

Weaknesses
Will do the work as tackler but can take the worst of the collision
Missed open field tackles have dogged him
Takes inconsistent angles to the ball
Lunges rather than sliding his feet to close distance on cutting runners
Too aggressive in response to route fakes
Bites and gets forced into recovery mode
Lacks desired instincts and feel for deep coverage
Doesn’t get enough depth to help on deep throws
Slow to read quarterback and get the jump to range over top
Fails to find football when his back is to the ball
Missed the end of the season with a shoulder injury that will have to clear medicals

That is NFL.com's eval. I am so sure everything they wrote is spot on.

Some of yinz go on my ******* nerves....

I think part of this could also be that the steelers couldn’t get a top tier ILB. Edwards and Burnett can play in the box and maybe that is the solution to replace Shazier on passing downs. Quite a few teams are now using Safeties to play like LBs and the steelers may be planning that as well.

i don’t think this means they are done at Safety. If they could get a ballhawk like Bates, or a smart player like Iguebuike from Northwestern in the 3rd, that could be the pick.

Maybe roll the dice on the combine phenom Troy Apke from Penn State who ran a 4.3 forty. He’s raw as a safety but would likely be an impact special teamer from day 1, at least until Goodell outlaws kickoffs.
