Shazier had surgery

First and foremost I’m praying for the young man to make a full recovery with the priority on being able to walk and live without pain.
If football is in Ryan’s future it will be his and his family’s decision on what’s best for Ryan if in fact he can even be medically cleared. So forget football for him in 2017 at the very least and just keep the young man in your prayers that he makes a recovery.

I understand that some have had similar surgeries and are living a normal life. That is great and that is what Im hoping for Ryan. But football at the professional level is not a normal life. Very risky when you are in the best of condition.

Peyton Manning had all kinds of stuff done to his neck;;;fusion, screws...

From a 2014 article.

Less than two years ago, Manning had a fourth surgery to repair his spine that this game has damaged. The most recent forced a doctor to slice his neck open, remove a disc between two vertebrae in his spine, replace it with a piece of bone, fasten it with a titanium plate and screws and then sew him back up. Despite all of this, he has set career highs in yards and touchdowns this season and will be leading the Denver Broncos into the AFC Championship Game this week.

God damn, I hope he can still walk. **** football, just let him make it out alright.

So sad, though. He was on a path to the HoF, imo. An impact player from day one.

No news sure does not feel like good news.

mrs.shazier50Just wanted to thank EVERYONE for all the prayers and support for Ryan. So sorry I haven’t been answering phone calls and texts at this time . Please just keep Ryan in your prayers. This is honestly more than football. You guys honestly don’t know how much this means to us and our families. The love and support that has been flooded our way is something that we are truly grateful for. We THANK YOU! God is TRULY able!! #prayfor50 #shalieve #50 #steelers #faith #family

Had the opportunity to meet the kid this fall and he was incredibly nice. I wish nothing but the best for him and his family. By all accounts Ryan is highly intelligent and a great person...he will be just fine without football. The Steelers will take care of him and I suspect after some mourning, he will return to the sidelines in a coaching role.

...Football rarely lets you leave on your own terms.

Agree - prayers for him so he can make a full recovery. I hope if he does recover fully, he chooses to not play ball anymore. Just not worth the risk. Plus, even if he feels 100%, by the time he is in his 50's-60's he will suffer because of this. Good kid, liked him at OSU and was thrilled when the Steelers got him. This is all bigger than football though. The Steelers will be a much worse team without him, but it is what it is.

Isn't this what tiger Woods had

Swinging a golf club and getting blocked by a 300 pound lineman / tackling an NFL ball carrier are completely different

I do pray for Ryan. Reminds me so much of Gabe Rivera back in the dark ages of the 80s. Promising DT who was in a car accident and paralyzed and never played again.

Yeah I remember that. Wasn't Rivera the Steelers 1st round pick that year over some home town guy named Marino?

Almost certainly. No team or the NFL/NFLPA will bear the liability of someone playing after that type of surgery. Right now, I just hope he can resume a "normal" life and walk again.

This is what they said when Manning had his neck surgery even after his doctor clarified that he was not at any increased risk. Nobody knows if Shazier will play again, but surgery doesn’t necessarily put someone at increased risk.

Perhaps....but always tackling with your head down does. Ryan lacks good tackling fundamentals.

Im still disturbed by the gametime comments from gobengals and some of the other bengals boards... no other fan base, not the Ravens, Pats, Browns, Raiders... none of them had anything but shock, horror, and well wishes at that moment... then a bunch of bengals fans are gleefully wishing him paralyzed... it was beyond classless...

Has there been any tweet or comment that suggests Ryan can feel and move his legs. Are we sure at this point that he will walk? I cannot find anything except the “some movement” statement.

Dr. David Chao spoke on Sirius and stated essentially that the return of feeling in the first 24 hours was sometimes the largest return of feeling.

Yes, although had Rivera not been paralyzed the 80's may have been better for us.

I just saw Shazier was ruled out for the Ravens game. Of course! But I wonder why he hasn’t been out on IR yet? Could he return this year?

Whatever Peyton Manning had performed on his injury is irrelevant. He doesn't tackle players. So there is no comparison to make with Shazier.

I think you can forget about that, but all we hear is speculation - still no news even about what the extent of his injury was

Ryan Shazier injury update: Steelers coaches, players say football return secondary

In the wake of Ryan Shazier's spinal surgery, his Steelers teammates and coaches are more concerned with his ability to lead a normal life, rather than his return to football.

The team announced Thursday that Shazier had undergone spinal stabilization surgery the day before in Pittsburgh, seemingly putting to rest hopes that the Pro Bowl linebacker might return this season.

Although the team did not provide details of the surgery, or Shazier's prognosis, such procedures typically involve fusing vertebra together with rods and screws. Dr. David Chao, an orthopedic surgeon who writes on medical issues for the San Diego Union-Tribune, wrote Thursday that the surgery is not unexpected, but "does not rule Shazier out from football in the future."

"But without a doubt he is done for the season. Fusion takes 4-6 months for recovery," Chao wrote.

His mom was asking for prayers, and thankful for support.
Some times, no news is bad news.
Peace to the family; lets hope Ryan can lead a normal, productive life.

We do know he's got one of the top neurosurgeons in the world working on him. I'm going to assume he knows what he's doing.

Maybe, but many here seem to know more.................... GOD's speed Ryan.

Salute the nation

That's just Bengal fans. I'm never shocked by anything they say. The most vile, putrid fans anywhere. There isn't even a close 2nd. I think something in the air over that way rots their brains.

Ryan I hope you have a speedy recovery and get back to your team and brothers with the Steelers the greatest team in the world go Steelers beat the Dirty birds

Antonio Brown to feature injured teammate Ryan Shazier on cleats

PITTSBURGH -- At least one Steelers player will have Ryan Shazier on his heart and his feet on gameday.

Antonio Brown used Snapchat to showcase his customized Shazier cleats, which he can wear during warmups before Sunday night's game against the Baltimore Ravens at Heinz Field.
