At least Dr. Maroon is the best there is.

Spinal surgery is a last resort. They didn't even give the spine time to fully heal. If he's not in any serious jeopardy of being paralyzed....which he is not....they should have waited.
Spinal fusion should be last resort only. That's goes for everyone. Seek every other possible avenue as an option before a spinal fusion.
Shazier's career is over! Sucks because ou defense without him is in trouble.
Anyway I hope he comes through ok and can get on with his life. His career is done!
“It’s not good,” Alessi said. “We’re not to going to see him [play] again this season. He may not play football again.”
the surgery, as previously stated, could have been minimally invasive. Though it was telling that we were not being given a lot of information from the start...even after his parents made their way to the hospital. What we do know he had:
- feeling
 - movement
 - surgery

from that we an guesstimate that his vertebra were cracked or broken. surgery may have possibly been putting something in to hold the bone fragments together.
we do not know how in-depth the surgery was, or what was done. It's a near certainty that his season is over. Given his youth and healing ability associated, he may make a full recovery. however, his best decision - even if he's 100% recovered and cleared - would be to not play again. Maybe hit the sidelines as a coach to stay in football. There are other things in life besides football. We know this because we are not NFL players. For NFL players, it's a difficult decision.
Spinal stabilization surgery is done with the intent to stabilize the spine when there is some evidence of instability there, according to ESPN injury analyst, Stephania Bell. The procedure involves the insertion of some internal fixation, using hardware, to stabilize a segment of the spine, which presumably gives a person the best opportunity to allow the neurological recovery to continue.
Top ten dumbest posts Ive ever read. So you are a world renowned neurosurgeon? You looked at his charts, MRI and CT scans. **** off.His career is over! One they fuse something you are ****** for the rest of your life! Not just your athletic life either.
Worst decision he could have ever made!
Spinal stabilization surgery is done with the intent to stabilize the spine when there is some evidence of instability there, according to ESPN injury analyst, Stephania Bell.
Shortly after the Steelers made news of the surgery public, ESPN’s Michele Steele spoke with neurologist Dr. Anthony Alessi, who consults with the NFL Players’ Association about what he makes of the surgery.
“It’s not good,” Alessi said. “We’re not to going to see him [play] again this season. He may not play football again.”
What’s the long-term outlook with spinal fusion surgery?
In most cases, the long-term outlook for patients with spinal fusion surgery is very good. If you had chronic back pain before surgery, you may still have some afterward. Losing weight and getting exercises increases your chances of feeling better.
After spinal fusion surgery, the area that was fused together can no longer move, reducing pain caused by excessive movement of the vertebrae.
Sounds like it would take a miracle for him to comeback and play football. Even if he could give it a go, the risk is too high.
I hope he saved his money. What does the NFL pension plan offer to players that were forced to retire early?
Isn't this what tiger Woods had
