Shazier had surgery

The Bengals fans weren't just horrible in the game thread. There is still a contingent of highly gleeful dudes over there.

Report: Shazier showing gradual improvement post-spinal surgery
Michael McClymont Dec 10, 2017 8:35 AM
Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier is showing gradual improvement after undergoing spinal stabilization surgery earlier in the week, ESPN's Adam Schefter has learned.

Shazier remains hospitalized after suffering an injury in Monday night's game against the Cincinnati Bengals, however, his condition has improved to the point that doctors are controlling and limiting his movement, Schefter reports, citing sources.

More to come.

While it looks like ,by all accounts, that this young man will walk again and lead a normal life I think some of you have to come to the realization that even if Shazier ever steps foot on the professional football field he'll never be "Ryan Shazier" again.

He'll never be that 'hyper athlete' that he was previous to that play and since the entirety of his game was based on his athletic play he'll also never be nearly as effective again.

Don't mean to be a Debbie Downer but I think far too many of you are "Shalieving" in a fantasy. Anything beyond him just being a normal guy from that play is a pretty pipe dream.

Just my 2¢

Well, that's the hope with any surgery.......to gradually improve after.

Shazier expected to stay in hospital into next week, but prognosis remains optimistic
By Jason La Canfora 2h ago • 1 min read
Steelers star linebacker Ryan Shazier remains hospitalized after being injured Monday night at Cincinnati, and while team officials do not expect him to play this season, they are hopeful he can make a full recovery. Shazier had spinal surgery last week and is expected to remain in the hospital for several more days.
Doctors will not be able to make a more exact determination of the extent of his injuries until after swelling dissipates, sources said, but there remains every expectation Shazier will be able to walk and lead a normal life. The surgery he underwent back in Pittsburgh was a procedure doctors initially thought might be required on Monday night, when he was rushed to the hospital from the stadium. He remains in good spirits.
The Steelers would be quite surprised if Shazier is able to play this season, but are in no rush to make any decisions and have yet to put him on injured reserve (which would formally end his season). There is no expectation of him returning to the field this season, one source termed it "very, very unlikely," and Shazier will be better able to get a handle on any timeline moving forward in terms of his playing career perhaps as soon as this week.

The NFL and its medical team have been monitoring the situation very closely, sources said, with Shazier suffering a serious injury from what appeared at the time to be a fairly normal football play. NFL medical officials have been in regular contact with Shazier's doctors since Monday night, sources said, beginning with the staff at the hospital in Cincinnati. That contact has continued with the doctors at the hospital in Pittsburgh and with the Steelers medical team as well.

Shalieve isn't about him playing football dumbass. It's about him recovering enough to walk and have a normal life. Turns out football really is just a ******* game.

IMO Shalieve is all about him being able to walk out of that hospital and have a normal life.....football is secondary....

Reports today say that while its "highly unlikely" he plays again this year, the Steelers are in no rush to place him on IR... that has to be good news in some way...

Wig I don't think him being able to walk has been legitimately in question since Monday night.

Maybe you don't understand the injury, the treatment, or the prognosis but not since Monday when he was in the Cincinnati hospital has it been in question to anyone but the ignorant as to whether he would walk or live a normal life.

So to explain.....a spinal concussion isn't something that will prevent you from living a normal life, a vertebrae dislocation (without spinal cord damage *and there isn't*) isn't something that will prevent you from living a normal life after you undergo the surgical treatment (which he did). So no one who has been paying attention in the least should be wondering if he will ever lead a normal life again.....

He will.

The ONLY question left is to whether or not his football career is over. That's the only thing anyone needing to "Shalieve" in anything could be Shalieving in issss.......that he'll play again.

Dumbass.

I don't think it's that cut and dry. They perform the stabilization surgery either for cases where the injury is worse than anticipated (broken vertebrae, herniations, spinal cord damage) and needs added support. This is the most common reason. The 2nd reason they do the surgery is to help it heal quicker. In either case, he had metal or something else inserted into his spine and it will take time just for that to heal. Of course, we all hope the reason for the surgery is the 2nd reason but that certainly has not been stated publicly by anyone.

I had this injury back in 1993 in a car accident and had 2 broken vertebrae. They were stable so I didn't need surgery but I had to wear a back brace for three months. Again, hopefully, he had the surgery to speed up that 90 day process but I think it is quite a stretch to think he might come back this year. If he did, it would be well into the playoffs.

you are the only dumbass here.....

Point being........... it's not in question as to whether he's going to walk or live a normal life.

Point being, we DO NOT know that yet. No one has given any details that he will be perfectly fine and able to walk again. Sure, that's what we are hoping but to state that right now is very premature.

#1 takes one to know one

#2 I see you didn't say I was wrong

My point was that if you're medically literate you DO KNOW and HAVE KNOWN since the diagnosis of a spinal cord concussion and not a partially or completely severed spinal cord.

The only thing that the diagnosis of a dislocation of the vertebrae or the spinal fusion surgery he underwent can effect is his potential return to football, not a return to a normal life.

You shouldn't be calling me a ******* coolie you should be thanking me for informing you there's no need for you to "Shalieve" anything regarding that.

Not my fault that you're ignorant.

Hoping he recovers for a normal life and being able to play again dont have to be mutually exclusive. Of course his long term health is what matters. But you can damn sure bet he is hoping he plays again. So do I.

Me too, which is exactly why I said no one has to worry about the normal life thing...... it's a known quantity.

Time to start wondering if he's gonna ever be a active player again.

tweek I am not ignorant, but I do know that not everything has been released about his condition. While the doctors are hopeful he will walk again, it is no a sure thing until he actually does it. So until I read reports that he is well enough to walk, I will be praying for that.....you can drop your know it all attitude

All the reports I’ve heard so far have suggested he’d be in the hospital a few more days before getting to go home.

That tells me they’re optimistic on his surgery being successful and he should be able resume normal day-to-day activity after a period of rest and rehab.

Hopefully that’s the case. As most others have said, this is bigger than football.

You are ignorant or you would not be saying that it's not a sure thing that he'll walk again.

It's ok dude, you're allowed to be ignorant on a subject.

I am not being a know it all, but I do know about this.

I wonder if I'm a medical professional?????

I'll educate you again. He has not sustained injuries that would result in him not being able to resume a normal life.

Plain and simple.

It would be like if you were worried about Joe Hayden resuming a normal life after breaking his arm because you were ignorant of the fact that breaking your arm doesn't significantly alter your life in the long run.

Get educated.
