Non-Exclusive Tag for Bell

FIRST OFF............. You can't do a ******* thing until he signs the TAG. Do you Remeber when he signed last year......The first day of regular season. If he signs and a team wants him you get their two first round pick (1st in 2018, 1st in 2019 or next available year pending on date signed). CLEAVELANDS first 2018 pick is the first overall pick in the draft, NOT the 4th. A friend of mine and many here, COPE. Wrote a great article about JUST this. I wish I had the link as I would POST it. It clarifies all this **** talking right up as that is what most here are doing, talking out of their *** without their mouth knowing better. (Rant over)

If Bell isn't offered a contract that he feels is worthy, he has stated he would sit out or retire. What makes you think he is going to sign anything for our convenience??? Also just because he signs doesn't mean he has to show up until week 10 as he ONLY needs to play or be available to play in six games to be considered tag fulfillment. The STEELERS hold a lot but BELL has a lot too. He isn't magically going to settle for a convenient contract from another team so not only do they lose their two 1st round picks but also a VERY heavy laden contract that many here aren't even willing to offer.........Kapish??????? It's a ****** up deal and if the steelers where wise unless a contract that is friendly to team is signed, I just take the tag and run his wheels off, our coaching Cool Shades is all about that.

James White is the best example I can give, looks like a stud some games when schemed in to the plan, then vanishes for weeks....

The only RB who I wouldn't call a scrub (meaning low draft pick/little to no production except on P*ts roster is LeGarret Blount

Here are their RB's off their team roster online in the past 3 seasons
Dion Lewis
Rex Burkhead
James White
Brandon Bolden
Donald Brown
DJ Foster
Bount
Steven Jackson in his 13th year in the league
Ray Finch
Steven Ridley
Shane Vereen

None of these guys but Blount starts for 2/3 of the other teams in the league but they all look pretty damn good when the p*ts scheme them in....Even Blount being a top 15 back is a stretch...

All of these guys do what the p*ts want them to do for peanuts, there's no way they give PIT 2 1st rd picks and Bell 14.5 million
No, they would not give up 1st rounders for a rb.
But, those RB's you mentioned I would not say are scrubs. They may be avg.
But, The Bus was in that same category until he came to Pittsburgh.
Willie Parker could not make starter at UNC Tarheels. Undrafted Free Agent.
Both of these guys came to a team that knew exactly why they wanted these players and exactly how they would use these players. That is what happens with the Pats.
And
Ridley looked good with the Steelers in one game this year.
It will be interesting to see how this works out.
I don't know what the Raiders would give to have a back like Bell.

Nearly 100% accurate DIC, The only think that I need to clarify is that Bell doesn't have to sign the non exclusive tag for the Steelers to be able to trade him. Here's a link to the article on our home page:

https://www.steelernation.com/cap-class-leveon-bell-franchise-tag/

And I will add, Cleveland's 4th pick in the draft is not in play, and can't be in play for trading a franchise player. Only their #1 if they want to deal, and if we get that pick, I take the best QB. Though I wouldn't cry if we took Barkley.

The only way the #4 pick could be in play is if the Steelers sign Bell to a long term contract BEFORE the start of free agency March 9th ish. And that is not going to happen, but if it did, the Steelers could work out any trade, but would have to eat some dead money as well, which won't happen either. The NFL does not have sign and trade deals like other leagues, so you will be on the hook for a portion of the signing bonus.

Danburg1 you make a good point about Parker, but I still think the redskins paid him pretty well after PIT, but of course he flopped there

I'd argue Bettis is a stud, a Hall of fame talent the Rams were wasting tho

You're probably right, the NE backs are better described as average than scrubs, but to my knowledge the only one who produced anything tangible outside of NE is Blount, and the pats toss them out at a whim.

I'm not optimistic about Ridley, I hope I'm wrong

Barkley could fill KR and also replace what Bell can do. However i can't think of any realistic scenario where we would be able to draft him.

Peter King: Watch for Raiders on Le'Veon Bell

Peter King expects impending free agent Le'Veon Bell to "go to the highest bidder" and names the Raiders as a team to "watch" for Bell.

King doesn't do much reporting in terms of breaking news anymore, but he still has many connections throughout the league. The new staff in Oakland has been mum when it comes to Marshawn Lynch's future with the team, so Beast Mode could very well be one-and-done for his hometown Raiders. Oakland could use that money to go after a younger stallion like Bell, but he'll have no shortage of suitors should he reach the open market.

It's going to be tough for the Steelers to use the franchise tag on Bell again this year since they have very little cap room at the moment. However, creating cap space is a relatively simple task.

So tell us why exactly will the Browns not just draft Barkley then themselves?

They might. Or maybe they don’t think he falls to #4 but want to go QB #1. Maybe we trade and he doesn’t fall. But let’s say a Minkah Fitzpatrick is there at 4. Then get a ILB like Edmunds or Jefferson at 28 and come back in round two with a Sony Michel.

Couldn’t the Steelers sign him with a future roster bonus like 5 days out. Trade him to whom ever which then takes that roster bonus and turns it into a signing bonus.

There are two franchise tags, exclusive and non-exclusive. The non-exclusive lets other teams negotiate and
offer a contract to the player. The tagging team can match or receive two first round picks for the player. This might
be the way to go with Bell. If teams aren't willing to negotiate with him, he might realize his real value and sign a long
term reasonable deal with Steelers, if someone wants him Steelers get 2 picks and cap space to continue to improve
the team.

Be nice but I don't think any team in their right mind would trade two #1 picks for Bell, given his injury and weed smoking history.

there is a few dumber teams out there, never say never

Peter King claims the Raiders may be interested. I wonder if they might package some interesting picks for him.

81 said he's start banning people if we mentioned Cleveland though.

Jesus Christ. They are not trading Bell to the Browns. I'm gonna start banning people for suggesting it. Never happening. Not in a billion trillion years.

Seriously doubt Bell would't be tagged....

I was thinking Raiders as well. If you get their #10 you have a good shot at Roquon Smith. If someone took Bell on the non-exclusive
you essentially get 4 or 5 players. 2 with the draft picks and you can sign 2 or 3 with the available cap space. You fix the defense and pick
up another back. You can replace Bell with 2 backs. A 1st and second down back that gets you 1000 plus rushing and a 3rd down back
that can catch. Duke Johnson didn't carry much for Browns in rookie year but he caught 74 passes.

I was all for keeping Bell but he seems to be the lead discipline problem on the team. Eliminating just that improves the team.

Clarify something for me here about the exclusive tag. According to the article "Worst case, I would tend to think that Bell could hold out a few games, and then come back to play out his franchise tag. This way he can still maximize his productivity and his one year salary. The contract is fully guaranteed once it is signed. So the Steelers would have to pay $14.4M whether he plays 16 games or 6 games". If he signs the franchise tag, he can still hold out up to 10 games and be paid for the entire season???? That sounds insane from a team perspective but I can see Bell doing it to screw the Steelers.

A team who picks late every year might take Bell for two first round picks.

Suppose the Packers who have the 14th overall pick in 2018, and likely be picking MUCH later in the 2019 draft offered this years 1st and next years for Bell?

I think he'd fit with what they like to do, and they really need a back..

With the 14th overall pick the Steelers could pick RB Derrius Guice

http://walterfootball.com/scoutingreport2018dguice.php

And of course with the cap savings Colbert can go shopping for the defense in areas of need.

Not to mention, because he would be on the franchise tag, what team in their right mind would give up 2 first round picks for a 1 year contract?

Another team can sign him for whatever they want, it doesn't have to be the franchise tag amount. One of the Steelers' problems is that they are almost always pretty close to the cap.

The estimated cap space is: -$14,194,707

Bell wants 17 million? HA, trade him.

Total 2018 cap liabilities: $186,078,086

Dead money: $956,175 (This is included in the above figure.)
2017 carryover: $4,040,611 (This is included in the above figure.)
Projected top 51 2018 cap number: $178,386,911
The following are not yet included.
Pittburgh’s six draft picks: $4,933,532
52nd and 53 roster spots: $1,110,000 (This is minimum but those two spots will be taken up by draft picks. The remaining four draft picks, for simplicity, will bump off four minimum salaries of $555,000 each.)
The 10-man taxi squad: $1.4 million (estimated)
The 2019 carryover: $3.5 million (estimated)
The estimated cap space is: -$14,194,707

While the Steelers will not be over that full amount, they are currently over the cap. This is not a big deal right now, but they will need to get under the cap by March 14 for compliance

I believe that is why you have to put the non-exclusive tag on Bell, so he can negotiate a long-term contract with another team.
If the exclusive tag is used he can only negotiate with the Steelers.

If a player is on the tag and sits out, I believe the team can fine him, which can be a games pay for each game sitting.

However, doesn't that money still count against the cap, even if the team gets the money back, or is the fine amount subtracted from the cap?

His pass catching is suspect IMO. And what we have in Bell is a known. How he converts to the NFL isn't. Plus that high of a pick I am picking a shutdown corner or QB.........

You may be the only person who thinks Barkley’s pass catching is suspect. He has lots of film running WR routes, not just easy RB checkdowns and he has made several over the shoulder catches and others that require adjusting to the ball. He’s way ahead of most college RB as a receiver and it is extrememly rare for a back of his size to show so much as a receiver.

i really hope Barkley doesn’t land in cleveland.

If the NFL AGREED to that they need a new negotiator lol. Ya, play 6 games and get paid 120% of the best players at your position do for 16.

Honestly, tag him and see if you can work out a trade. If you can’t rescind the tag and move on with Connor, Ridley and draft pick.
