Non-Exclusive Tag for Bell

Why wouldn't the Pats look into Bell? To get a young, productive back in his prime to further push them away from the competition. They will look into it. I would. Two late 1st rounders for that talent. Hell yes. Another reason to curse them.

No way they spend that kind of cache on a RB, esp when they seem to find exactly what they need in the bargain bin. Rex,Lewis, White Gillislee fit exactly what they do just fine. I mean, they are not dynamic on offense, but their execution is what matters.

Unless that RB is a special talent. Barkley is a special talent. He can split out wide and run WR routes. He’s good at pass protection. He’s a big back that is powerful, but also makes tons of people miss and he has breakaway speed. You just don’t see a RB with all of that rolled into one very often.

He also has no off field issues. He’s high motor, high character. He showed he has heart too by not just playing in his bowl but playing hard and wanting the ball even more.
And as far as I know Barkley is not injury prone??

C'mon, we can lose to the Pats no matter which one of us has Bell. If we can actually get two firsts, or even one, I say pull the trigger. Bell may have all the talent but he is a locker room cancer and is a poster boy for the undisciplined, me-first, unfocused attitude on the team this year. He has two strikes against him for substance abuse. Let him see what another team will offer. If he is given a multi-year contract, he will be another LaMar Woodley.
Don't forget INJURY PRONE.

that is like a second rounder. If you are letting Bell go you damn sure should get value for him. I would much rather trade him to a ****** team with a better draft selection.

Not sure he is a locker room cancer either.

Another Woodley ? Bell hasn't shown the lazy work ethic, or problems gaining weight.
Definitely to a shirty team that will have high draft picks.

The week before the first playoff game he shoots his mouth off about not playing next year for the franchise tag. We find out after the fact that was late for the most important game of the season and blew off the last walk-thru before that game. Coupled that with a couple of drug suspensions and giving the Jaguars bulletin board material about a meeting with the Pats. What else does it take to be labeled a locker room cancer? I put some of the blame on Tomlin for allowing this nonsense but if Bell shows as much commitment in 2018 as he showed in 2017 to the game and his team I still think we're better off without him.
Good points

K if he is so ******* special why won't the clowns just save money and draft him theirselves? They wouldn't be out two picks in the process. And **** a franchise QB and a shut down corner in the process huh?

Well, the Browns/Clowns have done some stupid things in the draft before, so, who knows??

ya can't just trade him. You have to sign him first, and not just the franchise tag signature, right? He signs the Franchise tag and then negotiates the LT deal or just negotiates the LT Deal and signs that. Once he signs the LT deal, you can trade him. What are the chances of him signing the LT deal if he knows you are going to trade him to a shithole?

Fournette has half as many TDS as Bell did this year... and he did that in 2 games versus our defense.

Bell isn’t worth what his ego thinks he is.

I believe if he's franchise tagged then the Steelers can trade him, ie no need to sign him to a LT contract to facilitate trade. Presuming he signs the franchise tag.

The exclusive tag means that player cannot negotiate with any other teams once the team applies it. The team owns that player’s rights as if they were under any contract so the team can trade them or resend the tag, but the player is stuck. The only choice the player has is whether to sign the contract or not. If they don’t sign it then they must sit out the entire season as they can’t negotiate with other teams until the start of the next football year.

I still don't understand this version of the trade yet. If we sign him long term I don't see us trading him. He is going to get a very large signing bonus and if we would then trade him that(Signing Bonus) would be on our books then. So this will never happen. For some reason everyone seems to think this is a viable option. Maybe I am seeing things wrong.

Couple of examples of franchise-tagged players getting traded:

Cassel sent to Chiefs
http://www.espn.com/nfl/news/story?id=3942130

Cassel's steady improvement sent his stock soaring as he entered free agency. So the Patriots put the franchise tag on him, requiring any team that signed him to give them two first-round picks. But that tag would have cost the Patriots $14.65 million if they kept Cassel as insurance if Brady's health was questionable.

Chiefs trade All-Pro defensive end Jared Allen to Vikings
http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...efensive-jared-allen-vikings-article-1.283433

The Chiefs designated Allen their franchise player, but Allen made it clear he wanted no part of the team's massive rebuilding plan. He told the team he wanted to play for a contender and was not interested in signing a long-term deal with a team that is embarking on a youth movement under coach Herm Edwards following a 4-12 season.

The bounty of picks obtained in the trade, and the cap space created by Allen's departure, could help expedite that process in Kansas City.

The Chiefs now have their own fifth overall selection to go with Minnesota's No. 17, six of the first 82 picks and 13 altogether in this weekend's draft.

Packers deal DT Corey Williams to the Browns for a second-round pick

The Green Bay Packers dealt franchise-tagged defensive tackle Corey Williams to the Cleveland Browns Thursday night, kicking off the free-agent signing period by acquiring an additional second-round pick in the April 26 NFL draft.

Is the tag still the same as when these trades took place. A new CBA has been signed since then ...just curious.

Good question. Hard to find specific info on this, but based on the blurb below, it's still possible to trade a franchise tagged player.

Cousins, 28, received the “exclusive” version of the tag, meaning he is prohibited from negotiating with other teams as he could with the non-exclusive franchise tag. The Redskins, however, still can a) negotiate a long-term deal between now and July 15 with Cousins, who set a franchise record last year with 4,917 passing yards, and b) discuss a trade with another team.

The *pats would never pay Bell $17mil, ridiculous. And why would Bell sign for less than 17mil if thats what he'd get after holding out and showing up for the first week of the season?

That said, I don't think he is worth $17mil. Eleven other teams made the playoffs without LevBell, and some of them even WON playoff games. He is definitely the best back in the league, but you apparently don't need the best back in the league to win a Super Bowl.

Bell will get $14.4 mill for the tag next season.

Do it! Put the non-exclusive on him. If someone wants him, we get 2 firsts. If not one bites, work with him to sign the tag and trade him to whomever. I'd still want a first this year and a first or 2nd next year.

Yeah, I'm starting to lean in this direction as well. I love Bell the player, such a unique talent. But given the tread on his tires, his injuries (at the worse possible times), his rap star, me first attitude, his lackadasical approach et al, it may be time to try to maximize the loot for him and re-build through the draft. I presume the Steelers will keep it close to the vest, but would not shock me to see him moved sometime before the draft. And at this stage, I would wholeheartedly agree with it.

Who are the scrub RB's the Pats made look good?

Sent from my LG-K550 using Steeler Nation mobile app

James White is the best example I can give, looks like a stud some games when schemed in to the plan, then vanishes for weeks....

The only RB who I wouldn't call a scrub (meaning low draft pick/little to no production except on P*ts roster is LeGarret Blount

Here are their RB's off their team roster online in the past 3 seasons
Dion Lewis
Rex Burkhead
James White
Brandon Bolden
Donald Brown
DJ Foster
Bount
Steven Jackson in his 13th year in the league
Ray Finch
Steven Ridley
Shane Vereen

None of these guys but Blount starts for 2/3 of the other teams in the league but they all look pretty damn good when the p*ts scheme them in....Even Blount being a top 15 back is a stretch...

All of these guys do what the p*ts want them to do for peanuts, there's no way they give PIT 2 1st rd picks and Bell 14.5 million
