Looking ahead

Roethlisberger is going to count $33 million against the cap in 2020.

Wow, I love Ben, and as we've witnessed this season without him, his value is clear...but man, $33 mill against the cap is an ugly number to look at.

If only Ben had some sort of business to funnel like 15m of that through... ya know, like that one cheating team.

You're right about Tuit, we would probably take a $8 million cap hit cutting him.

Try 15 million. To me you need to bring back as much of the defense as you possibly can. I would do what I have to in terms of guys like Barron where you save about 5m to get Dupree on the Tag. Extend some contracts, and Duct Tape it together and hope for magic with an up and coming defense and a last chance HOF QB. If next year was like this year with Ben, you tear it down and save 20m on the 2021 cap by cutting Ben. And hopefully if it went sideways we would be talking about a new coaching staff and a rebuild.

Going into next season, the Steelers "should" have the bare minimum needed to contend for a Superbowl with good QB play and a strong pass rush.

The rest will be up to the coaching to maximize the strengths and minimize the weaknesses on the team overall

That's a concern.

It is a lot. 12M in salary and the rest is amortized signing bonus money. To compare with other top tier QB's not under rookie contracts:

Wilson: 31M
Rodgers: 36M
Goff: 36M
Ryan 33M
Cousins: 31M
Stafford: 31.5M

Brady and Breese did cap friendly deals or they would be up there as well.

The next tier runs low to mid 20's. What is going to be scary is when Mahomes gets done.

Remember, they did BB's deal expecting to have Bell and AB on board as well. They put a lot of capitol into making one last run with Ben. Despite what people think of Rooney and KC, they both know how hard it is to find and develop an elite QB. They were all in and then Bell chased green and AB went stupid. Fans didn't seem to mind throwing that big money at the 3 B's then. Pay the Man was the call by a lot of fans (not saying you were topseed, i have no idea what your position was). Problem with Pay the Man is that the rules of accounting make you show those expenses at some point. Just in case anyone doesn't know, the Grim Reaper is a CPA.

Tuitt costs the team over 2M to cut. not gonna happen.

If they close a deal on Bud, Chick is done. That is 5M in savings right there.
McDonald is 5.6M in savings. Love the guy, but injuries are an issue.
Foster is 4M savings. Love what he has done for the team, but it is time.
Berry is 1.8M savings. Not worth that hit.
McClures is 1.5M savings. Gone.
Nix - 1M.

All that on cuts only, no restructures. There is room to move.

.

Many think Mahomes is going to end up signing a bigger contract than what Gerrit Cole just signed with the Yankees.

That would be interesting to see given how the NFL is different from MLB with the salary cap and how it does not fully guarantee its contracts.

Regardless, Ben is really not making an obscene amount relative to what QBs are currently making and set to make in the near future with the salary cap increasing.

There's also the chance the cap may not be around much longer. The players have had it with it, and the likes of Jerry Jones and Daniel Snyder want to do away with it as well.

Ending the cap will end football as we know it. I am down to just Steelers football as it is; that might push me the rest of the way out.

I agree, but I can't see the lower tier owners ever agreeing to no cap. No cap will put a ton of pressure on the draft picks to perform immediately

In a perfect world you retain Bud and Javon. But you just can't. However, Mike Hilton is an absolute no brainer to keep. Matekevich as well. You can't expect to improve your ST unit if you get rid of the best coverage tackler in the league over the last 3 years.

And tomlin will refuse to use 3 dl the most they did with the 2-4-5 nickel set is they use watt at de and on the dl heyward and Tyson but watt and Dupree are blitz on the loop

I want abs I think many would like to see a 4 man front in the nickel of de watt ng heyward dt Tyson de tuitt lb bush lb Dupree

Dan the Steelers have already said Bud is a priority . Javon is possibly gone but you can bank on Bud being around at least next year.

I know Tomlin said he's a priority, and they will work to make room, but he's gonna test the market and there's a good chance he gets paid elsewhere. Given the choice though, I'd keep Hargrave over Dupree.

I am not even convinced that will happen.

If the team has to the tag will be used.

I wasn't a fan of a long-term deal with Ben at the time -- I thought he had gotten beaten up pretty badly earlier in his career, and his strong production wasn't going to continue as long as Brady's had. But hopefully he'll be able to bounce back after missing almost a full season.
