Lake opens up:Boykin had a degenerative hip, William Jackson would have been th pick

I'm glad we took a corner early. If I'm not mistaken, I don't think we've taken a corner in round one since the 90s, when we drafted the very disappointing Deon Figures, and the slightly better Chad Scott, neither of whom could carry Ike Taylor's proverbial jock strap. Hopefully, Burns will be better than those two.

First round CBs for the Steelers - not very much luck

1997 - Chad Scott
1993 - Deon Figures
1987 - Rod Woodson - one of the best Steelers of all time
1975 - Dave Brown - Don't even remember him in any way
1973 - JT Thomas

And our 2nd round DBs didn't do much better.

2015 - Golson - has yet to make the field
2006 - Ant Smith - a safety, but worthless
2005 - McFadden - I thought he was pretty good for a few years, but somehow he just got crappy.
2004 - Ricardo ColClough - never any better than horrid.
1999 - Scott Shields - big and fast, and terrible (zero instincts)
1987 - Belton Delton Hall - Was a hitter, but couldn't cover anyone to save his life.

I think cornerbacks are the toughest position to scout in football. Just my opinion from watching a lot of tape of players over the last 3-4 seasons.

What's to consider? We would of taken Jackson. Ok. But if he was gone we obviously were prepared to take Burns. Does it matter if Jackson was taken 10 spots 5 spots 1 spot before we picked. What difference does it make. In the pre draft process we had Jackson above Burns but also had burns part of the group of players we would take at at our pick. What's the problem???

The difference is Torry Holt vs Troy Edwards. That was a year when the Steelers locked in on a position and when the top guys were gone, they just went with the next WR on the list.

That's why it matters. If the Steelers had Burns rated close to Jackson, then Burns is a good pick, but if there was a big gap, then it was a mistake not to either trade up for Jackson, trade back and take a better value CB, or go a different direction, maybe take a shot on Miles Jack.

There is nothing to suggest that the situations are similar at the moment. Time will tell.

Dave Brown was taken by Seattle in the expansion draft. He played 15 years in the league, and was better than anyone on that list except Woodson. The Steelers were so loaded at that point, that they were guaranteed to lose a very good player in the draft.

Figures and Scott both looked very good early, then leg injuries totally changed them. Figures was shot, and Scott tore an ACL IIRC.

the fact Lake felt it necessary to mention they wanted Jackson over Burns does suggest that at least Lake had a significantly higher opinion of Jackson or else why bring it up?

Did he bring it up or was he asked a question? Not sure myself

I just want to know when we should or should not go by what the coaches/players say. Pretty confusing.

Pretty sure when it supports your argument it's OK
