Keith Butler hot seat?

Good points, but Cam made the pro bowl last year.

VERY true Cope but as each year progresses / pass it seems like someone has more hand in it. Butler's first year seen moderate improvement over Dick L's "D" but now that cool shades has entered the picture it seems the "D" has regressed. For what ever the reason weather Butler is to weak to stand up to CMVLT or is in the fire me now or at end of season mode, this "D" doesn't seem to have the Dick L. Protege written in it. That leads me to believe Tomlin is ******* this up. I realize CMVLT's teams are slow out of the gate and am willing to give it a chance but I can't believe they would come out worse than last year.

Salute the nation

Sure but he's a scape goat for Tomlin. Tomlin has been running the D since LeBeau left. We knew that last year.

Part of it is coaching, part of it is we lack the right skills to play defense the way the offenses are attacking.

In no particular order our problems are thus:

1 ) Stupid penalties. 12 men on the field, taking off you helmet. One Steeler player said there is a lack of communication. How can that happen?

2 ) We lack a true run Defending NT, and our ILB’s are a group are below average. Since Shazier went out, teams that wanted to run on us did, omit Cleveland.

3 ) Coverage underneath. A huge weakness. No one current starter can cover a Running back or TE. Our best coverage guy is likely Watt. Mobile QB’s kill us, as our LB’s are just too slow. The catch us in man defense, and get the green light to take off.

4 ) Only Haden is solid at outside corner. Burns is hot or cold, under focused, and not that fast. Hilton is s fine slot man, Sutton a good #4. With Haden out either Hilton or Sutton has to play outside and it’s a bad match up for us.

5 ) Our Safeties. Edmunds has a lot to learn. I don’t see our safeties being close to passes. Davis has a real bad habit of missing open field tackles that turn into long plays.

6 ) Berry sucks. We need a punter who can get distance, and hang time. Too often we give the other team good field position. With this defense field positon is very important.

7 ) The inconsistency of Burns and Tuitt. Both tend to disappear in games. Why? A good question.

So, can anything be fixed right now? Perhaps

1 ) Play big Dan more often on 1st down. He’s a zero vs the pass rush, but Hargave isn’t much better. We need a large body in there to at least prevent easy runs up the middle.

2 ) Insert Matt Thomas. The rookie has the coverage ability and the speed we need to help fix problem #3 which I think is our biggest weakness on defense.

3 ) Sign a new punter. Any good ones in the CFL, or older veterans that were cut? We should have kept Wile. Berry needs to go. Not only was Wile 1 million dollars cheaper, he was better in the pre-season.

The other fixes need to happen in the 2019 draft and in free agency. If only we spent 3 of our first 4 picks on defense, as I advocated, and traded or let Bell go, and used 14.5 million to fix the defense. This team would be much better off.

They need better discipline and better communication. This all falls on coaches IMHO.

"Big Dan.. zero pass rush..." He had the only sack last Sunday. Then after his sack, he plays like 3 more snaps after that. In sacks per snap, he is far ahead of Dupree I'd guess.

One thing I always wonder is why is Porter still a coach? What great strides has anyone made under him?

My remedy is this team needs a coach's enema - a real clean out - then they can start building something better.

I actually found this post to be one of his best. He stated his opinions well, and gave the reasoning behind them. Baby steps, but good ones.

You can't poop on every post he makes ;)

with lebeau we had 3-3-4 , 3-3-5 3-2-6 and 1-5-5
but with lebeau he made sure the NT wasa 2 gap Butler has 1 gap playing a position that requires a 2 gap, he is not a NT more a 3 T we should of drafted tim settle.

It’s the same BS he’s been saying for 5 years....

We need a 3:4 nose tackle. Scheme wise that position is getting obsolete with the spread offenses, but yet he wants McCullers to play more......he’s only good for 15-20 snaps a game. He got steamrolled on the important 1st down at the 1:50 mark. That was his play to make.

Coverage by LBs....who was available after Shazier was hurt? During the draft, FA? More or less last game, WHY were LBs covering WR? That’s the question I have.

He opined Thomas should have played LB. Ridiculous at this point in time. Hasn’t enough knowledge of the playbook. He doesn’t even know where to line up on special teams and was responsible for a big penalty on that unit.

The CB’s and comments Hilton and Sutton were solid. Last game, Sutton got benched and it was Hilton’s worst game as a Steeler. Yet Coach isolates Davis as the big problem at safety “missing tackles, allowing big plays. Of which Hilton and Burns missed a ton of tackles and were responsible for the big plays on the DBs.

He must have lost money to Davis for him to have such an opinion. Remember this guy still hasn’t admitted he was wrong about Polamalu. Enough said.

Draft picks on defense/offense. Again who was available for LB and what rookie is standing out right now at LB?

Punting.....forget it. It’s not worth the effort to point out his agenda.

Hahahaha....We fired the Offensive Cordinator & still have the same dumpy defense

Hahahahaha, who's the coach that made that decision?

Technically The Toddster wasn't fired, they simply didn't extend or renew his contract. If memory serves, they did the same to The Bruce before him. Difference being that The Bruce thought he was getting another contract, until he didn't.

I believe it was Hilton who said the defense spotted KC 21 free points off of blown coverages. Also a player last week(I forget who) stated that they have a very complex defensive system. I though they dumbed it down so the young guys could start playing a few years ago. Our defense has looked completely lost out there at times.

defense looks fine between the whistles for halftime and beginning of the third quarter.

But this time is was well articulated.

I had no problem with Butler getting the job. He had been waiting in the wings for a while. Now I did not have high hopes for him because he was basically running Dick's defense which was slipping but I feel he deserved a shot. I do feel that he should have been fired after last year and I feel bad for the guy. He was a hot commodity in the coaching ranks, but now he will be lucky to get a job coaching a HS team. I will be shocked if the steelers make a move mid-season. I feel a whole new scheme needs implemented which will be difficult during the season. So now we are stuck watching LBs try to cover WRs while our 2 DL get triple teamed.

That's is the whole reason I didn't want him as the DC. A Dick disciple....and since he was here before Tomlin that makes his promotion not a Tomlin decision. Which then buys Tomlin more time here. I would rather of had Tomlin hand pick his OWN Coordinators than them handed to him. Live and die by his own actions. It does seem that his current OC is one of his own choice. Looks to be his first Coordinator of his choosing since he became HC. Just weird actually. Some might say to much hands on by the Rooneys.

$$$$$$$$$$

This team isn't winning any championships and the worst thing would be to sneak into the playoffs and buy more time for the POS Tomlin and Butler, rinse and repeat.

If a Super Bowl title is the objective, a coaching change is needed. Plain and simple.

If anything, the Steelers should learn from the example the Penguins set by firing their "successful" but underachieving coach, replacing him and proceeding to win more championships.

Not really my point though he’d be huge star playing for ne or Seattle, philly where he could get freed up.... five men in the box just will not cut it in nfl.

KB was NOT a MT hire. He was the heir apparent DC period. You're spot on.
