Gimmick QB? The guy has been in the league for 4 years now! What? GM's dont have tape on the guy by now?
Weapons? His #1 receiver (Tedd Ginn) is most notable for having hands of stone! People kept saying Brady/Rodgers lacked weapons this year- but compare their skill players to Cams.
They have a great running game? They have a great running game BECAUSE of Cam. J.Stewart only had 989 yards this season- Cam had close to 650 himself. In fact, Cam averaged 4.8 yards a clip!
Instead of using the lazy logic ("Oh he's just another XYZ"), some of you have to watch him play. Its quite impressive.
And the people arguing that he has NO weapons around him, need to stop using the lazy logic that Ted Ginn was his "#1 receiver". Who do you guys consider the "#1 receiver" for the patriots is? Is it Edelman? I know it's not Amendola... But most people who are smart enough to understand football realize that it's Gronkowski. Much like the Panthers true #1 receiver is Greg Olsen.
Also, whether or not Cam is the reason for their solid run game or not, doesn't diminish the fact that they DO have a great running game, finished second in the league in rushing yards per game. They have a great defense that creates A LOT of turnovers, they are put together well.
Yes, Cam has made strides. No, he is not the "new prototype" QB. How do you beat the Panthers? Shut down the run, force Cam to sit in the pocket and beat you with his arm. Can he do that? He has been able to do it in spurts but not consistently. He's had three games over 300 yards this season, 7 games over 200 yards, which means he had 6 games of UNDER 200 yards passing. That tells me (and not just from stats, I've watched several Panther games this year), that teams are having problems shutting down the running game and forcing Cam to beat them with his arm.
Cams had four games this year that were atrocious, three of them came against top ten defenses in both yards and scoring, and one was the Eagles game (his absolute worst of the season).
Against Seattle, he didn't have to throw much, the defense created turnovers and points, and they got the run game going early. Once they had the lead, the defense sent to work. But lets not forget that Carolina did absolutely NOTHING in the second half of that game offensively. He played well in the Cardinals game, but so did the defense and special teams. This is not a knock on Cam that he is "stuck" with a great defense and solid run game, but they are contributing factors to his success this year.
His accuracy is directly related to his throwing motion. He uses his whole body, throws from a side arm position, and can be erratic at times. He has a cannon for an arm tho, can really launch it and put some zip. But he needs to tighten up his motion, throw from the top. He did lead the league in passes batted at the LOS after all. Has Cam improved? Yes he has. Does Cam have no weapons around him? No, he actually has decent weapons, nothing like we have, but he also isn't struggling like the Rams or Titans. Is he the new prototype? No, prototype would insinuate that there are other players out there very similar to him, and there just isn't. Russell Wilson would be a close comparison, but his size eliminates him from being able to withstand the hits that Newton absorbs on running plays, Russell is also a much more accurate passer than Newton is right now. In fact, Russel Wilson stats closely duplicate (and even bests him in passing yards, completion percentage, rating, and yards per attempt) everything Cam was able to do this year. The one spot Cam stands out more so than Russel is rushing TD's, and that comes from being 6'5" and being able to go over the top as he so often does.
I'm not going to say that Cam is a flash in the pan, but we've had these conversations before one a QB that is able to run and pass makes a big run through the season or into the playoffs. There were certain talking heads that were saying Kaepernick would be the best QB in the league within 3 years not that long ago. The one thing that Cam did well this year compared to previous years is cut down on the turnovers, which translated into more TD's. Aside from that, his numbers aren't that much different than his first four years.
