Gerod Holliman

That video just proves how hard it is to draft based on what they do in college. Half that Louisville team was drafted and they tackle like school girls lol. Did our guy ever wrap up and tackle anyone??? I love the human canon ball technique lol

I think Troy had that technique perfected.

I am not concerned about his 40 time that much because he is a 4.6 guy in and our of pads.

He had hamstring issues that likely effected his time and actually wanted to wait until after his pro day to perform his 40 test because of the bad hamstring.. Wonder what his college 40 times were?

Of course it's a highlight reel but what I like is he jumps routes and can actually catch the ball. He does a nice job anticipating the pass and jumping in front of the route. He might not be the fastest guy but 4.6 can get it done. Ryan Clark was never faster than a 4.6 and Lee Flowers was closer to 5 than 4.6.

There was one player in this draft I hoped the Ravens would not get - and that was Holliman, because he reminded me so much of Ed Reed. Now maybe he doesn't have Reed's savvy or discipline, but he looks a similar type, And Reed made the Ravens D exceptional because he could do the one thing the other players didn't (look for the ball) and didn't have to do any of the dirty work because the other 10 players always got there first. I don't think the Steelers will use Holliman in that way, and nor is the front 7 good enough to do it, probably. But if The front 7 picks it up, the luxury of having a specialist ball hawk in the secondary would payout big time.

Steelers seem to rotate their S's. Pull one off bring one in........With Holliman I would just leave him deep and let the other S play short. ( still teach him the run drill etc.... but doubt that will ever be his strength)

Lets see if I can put this in here.

Now I know Hines is gone but one thing that Coats has is the mind set of a willing blocker and I think he might be a little bit bigger than Hines. So maybe we added both things in this draft.

goodell would ban Ward out of football for that block if it happened this season.
Or at least punished as domestic violence, cause Ward made reed his ***** right there

Steelers have used 3 safeties before...in the 2005 Super Bowl run, we moved Troy into the box as basically a 3rd linebacker and let Chris Hope and Tyrone Carter play the traditional safety roles in the nickel. It was a 4-2-5 but again Troy was one of the 5 DBs but in more of a linebacker role. Perhaps Shamarko could play the Troy role and Mitchell and Holliman could play deep?

We'll see...Holliman needs to play special teams to make the 53 and if he can't tackle that won't happen...

I just looked at some of his game film. His tackling, or attempt at tackling, is nothing short of shameful. He makes Deon Sanders look like Jack Tatum..

As for tackling?

“The scheme I was playing in college wasn't meant for me to tackle,” he said.

He had almost half as many (20) misses as he did tackles (44). If the ball is coming his way he does very well. If someone catches the ball in front of him or the running back breaks through then he's in trouble. His tackling form is reminiscent of pee wee league players. He takes bad angles (to the point some thing he does it on purpose) and looks like he doesn't even want to try to tackle. But he was only a 7th round pick so the Steelers took the chance because of his ball skills.

I like the pick guy has solid coverage skills, his tackling issues can be coached. Far better than drafting someone who's a good tackler but bad in coverage.

7th rounder. If he makes it out of camp, it's a bonus. If not, he probably makes the P.S. based upon his playmaking potential (assuming he flashes that during camp). If he ends up totally sucking, the Grant pick takes on added significance because Lake has already stated that he sees Grant as someone who has the ability to make the switch to FS.

So, say Shamarko stinks up the joint at SS and Holliman does the same at FS. You have Will Allen man the FS position while (hopefully) Grant pushes him for playing time and the eventual starters position. Under this scenario, Mitchell moves to his more natural SS position.

(And yes, I know that I'm being a bit of a Buckeye "homer" here .. lol)

In Today's new NFL tackling is overrated people. I am sorry but in Rog's vision of the NFL you sack the QB and intercept the ball on defense other than that it's all offense all the time. His tackling is down right sad but in the 7th round what do you expect? If he would have had 14 picks and tackled like Calvin Pryor he'd have been a top 5 pick. The dude can cover and might actually be the BEST cover safety in this draft and we got him in the 7th. Of course that means there's a glaring hole in his game. I personally only get upset with the lack of effort. I don't care if he comes up and tries to take the guys legs out every time. 9 out of 10 times that works or it at least slows them down enough for someone else to make the tackle. My problem is he gives half assed efforts at times and takes poor angles. Lake definitely has his work cut out for him but if anyone can teach a guy to tackle it is Lake. It wouldn't surprise me if Holliman made the team as a dime back. I'd love to see him in passing only situations. I bet he would help that 11 ints we had last year.

He struggled tackling against college players. Against NFL players he'll be even worse. Also he only ran a 4.63 and can be moved by the QBs eyes too easily. Again, as a 7th it is no big deal. However I think he is going to struggle mightily as a DB in the NFL. Not sure I want a feast or famine DB in today's NFL.

If he can't play special teams, he's got no shot at the 53. His best shot may be to spend a year on the PS gaining strength and confidence in his shoulder. He only started 1 year at Louisville.

Of course he will probably have 3 INTs in the preseason and become the next savior in the eyes of Steeler Nation...

His ball skills are very good. I wouldn't be shocked at all if he picks off a few in pre-season against 3rd stringers. I understand why he dropped. If you watch the film his tackling is below horrible. It's really hard to watch. Not sure I've ever seen a worse tackler.

I don't know how he is going to play STs if he can't tackle.

Apparently he also had a hurt arm last year that added to him not wanting to tackle. It must have hurt when he tackled. Not and excuse, but it adds to it.

yes but in this case we are short at cb again

Oh, I didn't say it was the optimal situation. Just that it was a scenario that very well could play out.

I don't get the issue with Holliman, seeing how 4th, 5th, 6th round picks regularly don't make the team. The kid has one shot at it, either prove everyone wrong and show acceptable tackling skills in camp and pre-season to go along with his stellar ball skills, or he'll be getting on with his life's work in no time. There's no way the Steelers keep this guy if he's going to be a liability on the back end or on ST. So let's wait to see how it plays out.... I for one hope he can get over his weaknesses and goes balls to the wall this summer, we could sure use the depth in the secondary.

4.63 is not really that slow for a safety. Ed Reed ran a 4.54 at the combine and that was plenty of speed for his game. From what I read, Holliman was injured when he posted that 4.63. We get way to hung up on 40 times players post at the combine. This kid looks fast enough on tape to me... Hell he was fast enough 14 times that we know of. Injured or not, he plays faster in pads than that time would indicate. Worth a shot in round 7.. We may not get much from him this year, but I've read a few places that he's our safety of the future. If he ends up being that, we got a steal. Don't forget that Antonio Brown was a 6th rounder...just because you get drafted towards the end of the draft doesn't mean you can't be a star in this league.

Don't get it wrong, most of us root for each and every draft pick and a few UDFAs to make the team every year. We want them to succeed. We also appreciate their strengths while (mostly) reasonably acknowledging the areas that they have struggled in while playing college ball and how that may affect their chances of making the team. Holliman has a shot. What he does with that is entirely up to him. Hopefully he is able to show the play making ability that put him on the Steelers radar and put aside the fear of injury or whatever it is/was that kept him from being a good tackler. If he's able to do that, I think he will have taken advantage of his opportunity.

If he doesn't make the team, i don't think he'll make the PS. A part of what the PS does generally is to help the O out by pretending to be the next D it will face. If Holliman fails, I think he will fail because of lack of effort, not lack of ability.

Injury played into some of his issues. I am looking forward to see if he can turn it around.
