Hey guys, 1st time poster here. I stop in and read the boards often and enjoy the insightful posts by many of you. I am a die hard fan and I consider myself to be pretty knowledgeable, but by no means an expert. Hell I've never even played high school or college football so a lot of you have a leg up on me when it comes to schemes and how one LB projects better as a 4-3 DE with his hand in the dirt then a 3-4 OLB. Im completely lost when analysts talk about one player being a 2 technique and one being a 3 technique. So like I said, I'm not an expert, but by selecting an undersized corner in Senquez Golson, the Steelers have placed an emphasis on athleticism, speed and ball skills. I believe Golson was second in the nation in interceptions last year. Gerod Holliman, Safety out of Louisville led the nation in that category. The kids an absolute ballhawk. He had 14 interceptions last year and draws comparisons to Ed Reed. He and teammate James Sample are both still available. Sample is actually considered to be the better pro prospect because the big knock on Holliman is that he can't tackle, but with this shift in emphasis on turnovers and athleticism in the secondary I believe Holliman could be a diamond in the rough on the third day of the draft. We have thumpers at the safety position, but what we are lacking is a ballhawk that can take it to the house. The addition of Bud Dupree should help us force opposing QB's into quick throws and with a couple ballhawks in the secondary, especially in Nickle and dime packages, I believe we can improve on our pathetic turnover numbers. We have 5 more picks today and I would consider Holliman a great player to take a chance on in the later rounds. Opinions are welcome of course, would you guys consider this a wasted pick or value in the later rounds?

Welcome to the board.

Any ball hawk I would welcome. I don't know much about either safety from UL but I know Sample has some great size at 6'2. Seems like either one would be worth a shot.

This is what TMC says about your guy.

Gerod Holliman of Louisville has solid size at 5116, 218 pounds. He plays faster than his 4.62 forty time indicates. He shows better straight-line speed than change of direction. He is not a player I would trust through run support because he will take some poor angles, throw his body into the runner, and does not always wrap the runner and bring him to the ground. He shows some willingness to support the run, but Holliman’s best attribute is his ability to patrol the deep middle and force turnovers. He has the ability to get in position to affect many plays on the back end of the defense. He does show the tendency to gamble and can get caught moving forward to jump routes while allowing receivers to come open on the back end, and this could be a significant problem with the speed of NFL receivers. The upside to that is, Holliman tends to jump many routes and he has solid ball skills. He can be a significant factor in a football game, both good and bad. Holliman is a highly risky player, but for a team that is struggling to generate turnovers, he could be worth the risk. If he could channel that gambler’s instinct, hone his ability to make the right reads and remove some of the riskier decisions, he has the potential to be a turnover machine.

Welcome to the board!

I would like the selection, myself.

I think we will see a S or TE in 5, so it would not be a surprise to see Holliman picked. Or the Penn State S..... I would be slightly surprised if S wasn't the next pick...

welcome aboard, I would love one of these 3 in the 5th
S Holliman
S Harris
DT/DE Bennett
S/CB Amos

round 6
RB Langford
RB Brown
DT Crawford/Covington

Langford is drafted.............

I definitely like the idea of a ballhawk safety patrolling centerfield.. sounds like we'd be trading a couple deep TDs a year for some extra INTs. I'd be happy with either him or Amos in rd 5

Unfortunately the RB Langford is off the board

Gerod Holliman Steelers 7th pick

welcome aboard !

Gerrod Holliman - Welcome to the team BALLHAWK!!!!

I'm very happy we took him in the 7th round. Job well done, coaches and FO!!!

we created a thread at the same time lol.

ahh mods just delete mine.

A good pickup late as he is worth a look...........

Good god this kid is an atrocious tackler...

At least he's a ball hawk who likes to hit people.

Lets be honest, he dropped because he is a hothead and because he cant tackle worth a damn, but for a one year starter his ball skills were amazing... feast or famine and absolutely a great pick for the spot

Might be the worst tackler we've ever drafted

Holliman is an example of why film and production are not always the same.

I don't think this guy fits at all. He will frustrate NFL level coaches the first week he's in practice. He might be the first player that gets it's Tomlin's dog house during OTA's.

Gotta love getting him late in the 7th. If he can't play at the next level we didn't risk much, but if he can come in and contribute with some turnovers it's a great use of s 7th rounder. Nice pick at that spot

I like that they spent the last pick to look at him closer to see if they could tweak his game.......

I think you use him on the deep end in sub packages and see how it works out.... if it doesn't it is a 7 no biggie.

the instincts is what is intriguing

Hell, our front office throws away third round picks all the time on head scratching picks. It's the end of the draft, and unlike almost every DB we've had besides Troy for years, he goes after the ball. I'm willing to give it a year or two to see if he can improve as a tackler. Deion Sanders couldn't tackle my mom, he made "business decisions" when it came to tackling. First and foremost we need playmakers on that side of the ball. I'm not a big fan of some of the guys we took, this one is alright with me.

I think he fits in perfectly in the dime, passing situations right off that bat. Have Carnell work with him, he can become something special.

Tackling is about courage and technique. I don't thing this kid is a coward, so if he's coachable he could do something. But understand, BEST CASE SCENARIO he is a FREE safety. He will be useless anywhere near the line of scrimmage.

With Golden making 1.5M this year Holliman and Dangerfield should be a decent camp battle. We needed some competition for the depth at the position behind the 3 locks to make the 53 man. Doesn't seem like Holliman could play coverage unit on STs which could be an issue for him making the team.

Welcome Ballwhawk and good luck, as long as you're a Steeler. How bout picking off Landry so many times we can show him the door...

send him for a year to practice squad to teach him fundamentals. Next year he could be a real contributor
