Harrison is 37. Jarvis Jones wrist is still on the mend, and he has not offered much of a pass rush in his games played. Moats will likely remain a reserve.

I have never seen our OLB's in the 3-4 defense be this suspect as pass rushers. The way things look right now, the offense will win 9 games, but the defense will blow 7.

Yes--I think Dupree needs to make an impact as a rookie for the defense.

Since we already know what we have in Jones, and he's on the mend, why not let Dupree run with the first string defense and start 2 pre-season games?

If he's not ready, okay play Moats or Jones.

*I'll define an impact rookie OLB as 7 sacks, 2 passes defended, a fumble forced, 50 or so tackles, and a good number of QB pressures*

Depends, do you want the defense to improve or not. The days of grooming a first round pick are over. And frankly, that was because the Steelers took better athletes that didn't fit other schemes, but required time in the system because they didn't play the outside backer position in college or the system was too much more complex than their college system. You see first round guys making an impact across the league every season. So my expectation is that he has an impact. Does that mean he has to start? No. But you have to be able to see this guy looks like a starter FOR SURE down the road. A play here a flash there. I don't think this team has time (Ben's clock is ticking) for failed first round picks on defense or even guys like Timmons and Heyward who take three years to not look like a bust.

It would be nice but expecting him to start in game 1 would be way too much to expect. I sure hope he can split time to start the season and start by mid-season. 7 sacks would be great but I would think he would be under that number.

Certainly should be starting by years end considering he is a 1st round pick(todays NFL) and considered top 10 talent.

You nailed it. In Ben's time. If Harrison gets hurt or retires, we have very little. The Steelers are not going to sign a high profile free agent pass rusher. That player has to be found in the draft.

Dupree needs to be the real deal. Maybe not as a rookie, but definitely in his 2nd and 3rd season.

Someone's back from vacation...

Vacations are awesome for the most part. It might humor you to know that we have a seasonal pass to Disney and and have been there and done that 20 times in 90+ degree heat. Next time I think I'll try Bermuda and see those pink beaches.

Don't forget Shazier.....dos this mean he can play the other side? Does Jones play the other side?

oh shut the **** up

Yes. I am expecting a Kendrell Bell like impact year one. Not even joking - they need to unleash him on the league and just let him fly around. Don't fill his head with stupid crap and just let him go run and hit. And no, I don't care if he screws up or "is not ready" because our D is going to be weak anyway.

Is this a euphemism?

Outside of possibly being a little soft in the injured list department, Shazier did exactly what I would expect/ want from him. He flashed and at times you could really see the difference in pass coverage and closing. He just has to stay out of the track suits.

I agree with sask you can't wait on draft picks. I don't know... man with out crappy pass rush and jones looking more and more like a bust how do you pass on Randy Gregory to take a 175 lb db?? Gregory as a bookend to Dupree??? You kidding me?? With Tuitt and Ironhead 2 in front of them??? I don't know...

well see what Gregory brings to the team that signs him, I'm glad it was not the steelers.

You pass on Gregory because there is a strong likelihood that he will be out of the league w/in 2 years because of his strong relationship with Ganja. You also pass on Gregory if you believe or have information concerning the rumors that he is not wound tightly enough to survive in the NFL environment. Plus, there's the matter of Gregory not being able to keep weight on. It's amazing to me that folks thought Shazier was too light to play ILB yet wanted to draft an OLB who doesn't weigh anymore than Shazier does. Not saying this is you Mike, but others on the board took that position on/before the draft.

Bud Dupree needs to show he is capable of play. He needs to show stregnth, raw physical stregnth. He needs to show some brains, yes a mistake(s) along the way, but some brains as well. He also needs to show durability, not sweats n a bench. If these are exibited, then we made a great pick as he will get better and better each season. Here's to you BUD !!!!!!

Salute the nation

I think in the second half of the year he needs to at least flash some pass rushing pressure in sub packages. As was mentioned he is raw...doubt we see a lot from him early. Would be a pleasant surprise if he proved otherwise...

40 sacks should be the minimum you want. 50 or more is the goal

Here's the minimum we should expect
OLB 20
DL 10
ILB 8
DB 5
Total 43

Here were the sacks last year
OLB 19 - Worilds 7.5, Harrison 5.5, Moats 4, Jarvis 2
DL 11 - Heyward 7.5, Keisel 1, McLendon 1, Tuitt 1, Cam Thomas .5
ILB 3 - Timmons 2, Spence 1,
DB 0
Total 33

You see that last year the OLB barely did enough and the DL did a nice job. The ILB and DBs couldn't blitz much because the coverage was so bad.

They have to get 20 sacks from the OLBs. Harrison and Moats should be able to combine for 10. That leaves Jarvis and Dupree. How much does Dupree need to contribute? If Jarvis plays like a 1st rounder and gets 8-10 sacks, then Dupree doesn't have to do much. But if Jarvis stays at 5 sacks or less than we need Dupree to have a big rookie year.

So yes, Dupree needs to make an impact, unless Tuitt steps up and the combo of Tuitt and Heyward can get 15 sacks.

If the secondary is better, then that will allow some more blitzes from Timmons and Shazier. Timmons has had 7 sacks in a season before. He can have 4 sacks easily. Shazier is an athlete they haven't had at ILB since Chad Brown. 4 sacks is not impossible for him either. That give you 8 right there.

Add in a few random DB sacks on blitzes and there are your 40 sacks. It can be 50 if an OLB has an unexpected 10 sack season.

Finish Joe Flacco Mortal Kombat style...

I know he is raw but they are going to need him to step up. I didn't care for Worilds but he at least gave them OLB depth. Now with Moats moving over OLB is razor thin. Jones still has a wrist issue and Harrison is 37 years old. They are going to need Dupree even if it is spot duty early on.

If you have seasonal passes to Disney and you go in 90+ degree heat when you don't have to, .....don't talk strategy about football.

I am not disputing your numbers as far as what is ideal. I am, however, interested in how you obtained them. Are these something like league averages?
