Coates out for a few weeks

You subtlety disagree with anything you don’t like. It’s not unnoticed or slick. Drop it. We will see if they decide to take a close comparison to MB, or keep Ayers, or keep and old one trick pony in DHB. Coates is GONE. We will see who’s right... because apparently I know nothing.

many of us have said Coates is likely gone. I have posted lists of those making it that include hunter and not coates. All I've said about Hunter in all the threads is that he has to prove himself in camp. He has been a huge disappointment since he was drafted, but he has not played with a QB anywhere as good as Ben....

but Hunter is not a close comparison to Bryant.....and no where have I said you know nothing...

Way to take what I’ve said to you before and throw it back at me as if it was your original statement. You said hunter didn’t even have a foot in the door to even make the roster.

please find that quote and copy it here. I have posted several times that AB, Bryant and JuJu are locks and that Rogers is a step ahead of the rest based on last season. Behind them is the group of Ayers, Coates, Hunter and DHB, and as many have said, Coates' injury puts him behind the rest of the group....

your first post on this was on 7-26...we have been discussing our WRs way longer than that......

Hunter is in no way a shoe in to make the team.....he has under performed so far in his career so he has a lot to prove in camp...

And then I came back to say he has never been with an elite QB. It’s easy to count a guy out if he hasn’t been given the tools around him to be successful from the jump. Tyrod is not an elite qb so don’t come back at me with that bs. Hunter will continue to turn heads and “prove his worth” to everyone. Day 2 coming to a thread near you.

All I’m saying is Hunter is legitimate and you continue with skepticism that he might not make it. That would be silly af coming from the Steelers. If we keep 6 WR, I can see Ayers with Hunter all day being rotated with the other guys. I LOVE DHB. He’s showed loyalty to the burgh and for that I am forever grateful. He also seems like that guy who would understand the situation and take it for what it is if he doesn’t make it.... but god knows if **** ever hit the fan with injuries, he would answer the phone. That is a belief I stand by. He is a Steeler just like DWill. I believe he would answer the call, but we don’t necessarily need him because he’s older. Coates is a hot mess and always has been. I’m frustrated for him... but how long can you give a guy a second, second, second chance if he’s just going to find a way to blow it.

This might be my first post concerning Hunter...way back in May..I posted a poll about which second year WR was going to have a breakout season....the only choices were Ayers....

but in a reply I posted the following....

I am well aware he is going to be in a battle for a roster spot.

Brown, Bryant and JuJu are the top 3 (as long as Bryant stays clean). Rogers has the inside track for the 4th slot, but he and Ayers are very similar...

so if those 4 make it...that leaves Coates, Heyward-Bey, Ayers and Hamilton fighting for what is hopefully 2 more spots.

Heyward-Bey is valued on special teams and as a veteran in the clubhouse, but does anyone get excited when you see the ball thrown his way? Cobi is pretty much a lesser version of Bryant and Coates Both these guys could be cut

Coates is going to have to show his alligator arms are cured and the ability to fight for contested balls...he is very good going deep as long as he gets behind the coverage...and his fingers have to be healed...

Ayers is a future HOF wr who was limited by high and low ankle sprains in training camp. He showed some flashes when injuries opened up a spot for him on the roster. He is going to have to show he can replace AB on punt returns and continue to do the little things like solid blocking when called upon to have a shot at sticking on the roster.

Then there are the other two...Justin Hunter and Severin....both have talent and could get in the mix....Hunter has under performed but he has not had a decent QB...now he will, if he gets time with Ben....Severin had a shot at the roster last season before being sidelined with a shoulder injury....

The battle is likely going to come down to who stays healthiest and who can also help out on special teams...and who can stay off the weed.....

Ayers has a shot...but right now, at best, he is on the bubble.....

so what exactly was new about you saying he was finally with an elite QB????

I have posted more than once that I want the 5-6 guys with the best hands to make the team. That likely leaves DHB out since his hands are questionable at best.

Coolie, I’m not going to sit here and scroll through months worth of forums to verify yourself. But good for you man. We’ve accomplished nothing and continue to argue over narrowly similar claims.

there is a simple search feature.....plus I already knew the thread that likely had my first thoughts on Hunter so it was simple to find. You claimed I stole the thought of hunter finally having a real QB from you, when you just joined the conversation two days ago....

I think that twitter shot illustrates when I broke down Hunter's film. He high points the football, by jumping and extending toward it, with both hands. That is the slow motion version of his highlight reel.

Today, I have Hunter as receiver #7, just behind DHB. Since Sammie is PUPed, DHB is the best ST wing we have on the kick coverage teams. He has an advantage because of it. I will break down DHB next to see how he compares technically to Hunter.

Hunter now getting 1st team reps with Bryant and Coates out and JuJu injured on the 3rd snap in practice. And, all indication is he looks pretty good. Keep that up and Coates may never get back on the practice field, let alone the team.

First day of practice. No pads. I would think I would look good under those conditions.

cut him

Steelers WR Justin Hunter has been making the most of his time with the starters, catching a few big throws from Ben Roethlisberger.

One intriguing connection to watch is Ben Roethlisberger and Justin Hunter, the lanky free agent signee who hasn't maximized his potential in four NFL seasons, all without a top-shelf quarterback.

That changes now. Roethlisberger and Hunter connected on a slick back-shoulder play in individual work, with Roethlisberger explaining the play to Hunter in detail beforehand.

In "seven shots" -- offense vs. defense at the goal line -- Hunter got loose on a crossing route for an easy score.

While this sounds like it could be the start of an intriguing duo most of Hunter's work with the first-team is coming due to Sammie Coates being sidelined and Martavis Bryant unable to return from suspension.

Pads or not, he's getting good reps in and Coates is doing nothing to help regain what he lost - the confidence of the team and how to catch a football. Even JuJu can't afford to miss much time or he will get pushed down the pecking order (not off the team but reduced playing time).

Coates gets a bad rap for trying to be #2 last year with broken fingers but I think we all wondered why they weren't playing Ayers more. Ayers wasn't even active for every game.

I agree Ron. We (including me) tend to ***** a guy out for being a Duce Staley and then when a Coates makes an honest effort to play through he gets **** upon. However, the timing of this latest injury is about as bad as it can be. What is he? The first 4 games? I don't know. I don't know how they could know. And there is tough competition at WR.

Ayers left training camp with high and low ankle sprains....when he was healthy it was a numbers game,,,someone had to be let go in order to bring him up. He would have been active a little sooner if Boz hadn't gotten injured so we had to have two kickers on the 53 man roster.

Hunter looking good again in day 2. Ben targeting him twice in goal line drill.

I also think the Steelers would have called up Ayres over Hamilton, but Ayres was banged up at the time on the PS. So Hamilton got the call up first. And Coolie is right, they would have called him up if our kicker wasn't hurt.

Coates gets a few points for trying to play while hurt...but those are far less than the points he loses for not making the plays with the injured hands....if he is well enough to be on the field he needs to make some plays

Hines Ward seemed to shine without a big time QB....it happens all the time.
