Steelers wide receiver Sammie Coates injured his knee while training during the off-season according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Coates had his knee scoped last week and could miss several weeks.

The Steelers may elect to place Coates on the physically unable to perform list. That would clear a roster spot so they could get a look at another player. Coates could be activated at any time from PUP.

This is a bad break for Coates who has plenty of competition for his roster spot. The wide receiver room is jam packed and a slow start could open the door for free agent signee Justin Hunter to make the roster.

Have to think this means Coates is on his way out, barring injury to other players. Per local sportscasters, he was still having trouble catching passes during OTA's. Missing 3 weeks will put him way behind the 8 ball.

put him on IR already, maybe that way he has a chance to make the team next season

This is the best thing that could have happened to him. He wasn't going to make the roster IMHO, but now he can be PUPed.

He's a free roster slot to break the glass in case of injury to Bryant or Hunter.

After reviewing the film, Hunter had a big edge to taking his spot.

Cope, not only do you post to fast but you"re mostly right most of the time. Sorry Sammie but this the best thing for your pass dropping @ss. Being on the PUP list will help insure you a back up roll which is something you may not have gotten outright. I wish him well and quick recovery.

Why wait so long to get it scoped? He should have done that months ago. I'd figure he's in a really bad spot now. The Steelers have a lot of wr talent on the roster.

This comes down to the doctor's recommendation. The doctor thought it would get better with rest. And it is always better to try rest than to go under the knife. It didn't get better, and he got it scoped. Honestly, scopes are not a big deal arthroscopically. It's a 4-6 week recovery for an NFL athlete. This puts him ready to go for the first game. So if anything, he did the team a favor doing it now than waiting for it to make him miss actual games.

The only problem is, he's fighting for a roster spot.

Done like dinner. Too bad. I went to the Jets game and was sky high about his talent. Didnt know it would be his last game of consequence.

If the receiving corps is healthy and not suspended he is gone. 4 weeks still gets through the 3rd preseason game. The minds are made up. 4 spots are sewn up. There are 4 guys fighting for 2 spots. Realitically barring unforseen circumstances you won't see him in Steelers uniform for a regular season games again. Not a chance.

If he misses preseason games I do not see how this ends well for him. How do you keep a guy who was injured last year, injured to start this season, over a healthy able body?

You don't............. Sorry Sammie but it might be time to start your Life's work.

I wouldn't say he is a definite cut trade but it sure doesn't help his cause.

I tellya though if I had the season he did last year. I might have pushed for a earlier scope to be ready for training camp.

He could still catch fire late and squeeze himself on the roster.... but this injury took a hit toward that goal regardless.

Waiver wire or trade bait for a late round pick. He ain't making the team

Tough to make the team if you aren't on the field. I hope he can make a quick recovery because he's shown he can stretch the field when healthy. There's always room for that type of talent on a roster.

I am really pulling for Coates to be that player he showed he can be the first 5 weeks last year.

I agree but it seems his physical issues/injury quickly morphed to mental issues and that is harder to overcome.

He’s gone. It’d be silly to keep his injury prone *** when we have 4 solidified receivers. There’s only one spot to fight for, and Sammie just lost. AB, MB, Eli, JuJu and Justin Hunter will be our stellar receiving corps this year with it always rotating, keeping everyone fresh.

I think the Steelers keep 6 WRs. So that would leave one spot for?

Ayers. Young, talented and always trying to improve. Watched his work ethic over the offseason. Hunter will make it. He’s been slept on only because he hasn’t had an elite quarterback throwing to him. Wait for Ben to see what he’s capable of. He’ll want him.

I have to agree. Ayers would be the guy I'd take a flyer on.

2 catches over the last 2nd half of the regular season.

for 14 yards.

That's a LOT of non-production and a great deal of opportunity for the corners to cheat up on Brown as well as a safety.
