Report: Rookie Will Monday Informed That Punting Job Will Be Open Competition

BY DAVE BRYAN JULY 29, 2016 AT 12:20 PM
Of the several interesting training camp battles that are set to take place this year for the Pittsburgh Steelers at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe is the one between punters Jordan Berry and Will Monday. While Berry is the incumbent punter on the team, Monday is an intriguing undrafted free agent who was signed by the Steelers earlier in the offseason.

During his talk with the media on Friday ahead of the team’s first training camp practice, Monday said he was told that there will be “an open competition” for the punting job during the summer, according to Chris Adamski of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Overall, this is not surprising news as you would expect Monday to be told he has a fighting chance for a roster spot and especially as he only has one other player to beat out.

At Duke, Monday punted 260 times for 11,299 yards and a 46.46 yards per punt average. Additionally, he downed 88 punts inside the opponent 20-yard line against 33 touchbacks. He ended his college career with highest punting average in Duke history.

Berry, on the other hand, punted 59 times for 2,511 yards. He had posted a 42.6 yards per punt average with 39.1 net average. 28 of his punts were inside the opponent 20-yard line and he only had 2 touchbacks on the season. His long in 2015 was 79 yards.

Over the years, the Steelers have had a hard time finding a long term punter. Last year during training camp and the preseason, Berry won the open competition over Brad Wing, who was ultimately traded to the New York Giants just prior to the start of the regular season.

They knew Green had ankle surgery and signed him anyways. Hopefully he can get on the field sooner than later.

That's why his price wasn't higher in my opinion

He's always been thin compared to the other linemen on the roster.

True, but he was also sick and injured. He looked like a tight end in the photo I saw months ago. What's his weight now?

When was he sick?? You ever think that's how is body frame is. He not short and squatty. He carries his weight differently then other centers and lineman for that matter

Or he has been out of football for very long time and just isn't back into football shape.

We gotta find out who this year’s training camp BFFs are. No more Archer/Wing. This year, it might be Sammie Coates and Demarcus Ayers, who were the first two players onto the field today

good to see both of them were out early.....

I think Ayers will have to beat out Rogers for that final spot. Perhaps no easy task with Rogers taking first team slot reps already..........

Day 2: Coates shows off

By Dale Lolley July 30, 2016
July 30, 2016

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Sammie Coates (14) hauls in a pass from quarterback Ben Roethlisberger behind defensive back Jordan Dangerfield (37) during a practice at the NFL football team's training camp in Latrobe, Pa., Saturday, July 30, 2016. (AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar)
It was a good day for Steelers receiver Sammie Coates on the second day of training camp.

It was obvious that the Steelers wanted to test drive the speedy wideout on some deep patterns and he continually took off on go routes down both sidelines.

He and Bruce Gradkowski connected on one deep ball, as Coates beat Doran Grant - who was actually stride for stride with him down the sidelines before Coates gave him a subtle push and made a nice catch in the front corner of the end zone.

Montell Garner broke up an underthrown deep ball to Coates from Ben Roethlisberger, but Coates was easily behind him before having to slow down.

That twosome made up for that moments later, connecting on a long ball down the opposite sideline with Coates making a diving catch on the long ball.

The knock on Coates had been he wasn’t an accomplished route runner and he struggles at times with his hands. But he’s catching everything in sight in this camp thus far and he’s really improved his route running.

He’s paying attention to the details.

After Darrius Heyward-Bey turned a corner inside out, Coates exclaimed, “Great route,” high-fiving DHB when he got back to the offensive huddle.

The kid seems to get it.

• Le’Veon Bell practiced for the second consecutive day, a good sign for a guy coming back from a major knee issue.

That means he was no worse for the wear after practicing Friday.

• We had CBS NFL Insider Jason LaCanfora on with us on ESPN Radio today and he had an interesting comment regarding Bell’s possible suspension.

It has been assumed that Bell will be suspended for four games if he loses his appeal in two weeks with the NFL for violation of the drug policy for missing a test.

But LaCanfora said that while he expects at least a one-game suspension for Bell, he doesn’t necessarily see it being a four-game suspension.

The league does have some leeway on those things. So even if it does buy Bell’s excuse for missing the test but still feels it needs to send a message, it could do so without having him miss four games.

• Inside linebacker Jordan Zumwalt, who is back with the team after being cut at the end of camp last year, worked with the outside linebackers today.

• Artie Burns has some feistiness to him. He closed hard on a deep ball to Heyward-Bey and knocked the ball out of his hands.

Later, he chased a running back 50 yards downfield to strip the ball loose.

• Today was Ryan Harris’ turn to run with the first team at left tackle.

It appears the Steelers will rotate Harris with Alejandro Villanueva on a daily basis. We’ll see if that holds up once they start playing preseason games.

• Thus far, Senquez Golson has been the third corner when the Steelers go to a nickel package.

• Mike Tomlin gave Markus Wheaton some time off today, which allowed some of the younger receivers to get additional work. Eli Rodgers got plenty of looks in the slot.
