Cam Heyward wants a new deal

I think fans just care about things that don’t really matter at this point, and it’s fueled by others who don’t really understand the financials behind NFL contracts.

It boils down to one question for me - do you see him as a top 15 DT in the NFL right now?
If you say yes, which most of us will, then he’s underpaid.

The money wouldn’t even be a conversation if the media didn’t want it to be. We wouldn’t even know contract numbers and you wouldn’t care.

And there’s no other free agent that giving him a raise would hinder us from signing.

So in summary, who cares.
How about not acting like a little baby for starters, that's why the fans are pissed.
-They gave him the biggest extension in NFL history for a non QB 31 years or older in 2020.
-He had two sacks in 2023 and was injured and still gave him a 3 year extension last September, even after he mentioned going to play in Cleveland, first time they've ever given a non QB a multi-year extension that was 35+.
-Now he's bitching about not being valued.
-He and his agent F'd up not asking for incentives
-He runs his mouth about Bell and Rodgers, then he turns around and does the same thing.
-Now he's getting team mates to whine for him.

Has nothing to do with fan not understanding financials.

So every player that ranks higher than where their contract ranks them should hold out? Where did he rank after 2023? I bet it was a lot lower than the contract extension.

I just flat out disagree. It does have a part of it.

But I don’t love the principle, but the reality is players want to be paid fairly for their performance. I’m not against that, but to directly answer your question. Yes, that’s the world we are in. Record breaking contracts are signed every year.

Agreed, everyone wants to be paid fairly, but then don't sign a multi year deal. If he thought he had a lot in the tank, then 1. ask for incentives, 2. don't sign a multi year deal, which he did in case at his age he didn't have it anymore.
I think this wouldn't be nearly as bad if he'd just shut his mouth and quit whining and having team mates whine for him, especially when he's called guys out for this exact thing.
And how many players have held out the following year after signing an extension? Any?

record breaking contracts aren't being signed by 36 year old players. As it was pointed out already, where did he rank after 2023? The season he flat out said "Screw anyone talking about me taking a paycut". Then shortly after that, signed an extension that averaged $14.5m/year. He was valued then, and if he REALLY felt this disrespect, he wouldn't have waited for training camp to pull this nonsense. He's a hypocrite, and that's what the fans are upset over. If he had signed for one year last year, it would be a different story. He could have played out that contract and hit FA and tried to cash in then. But he signed a pretty substantial contract last year...

Hargrave was out of our price range this off season for what they were looking at, and only signed ofr 1/2m more than Cam did, and he's FOUR YEARS younger. Do we have the money? Sure do, does it set a bad precedent to other players? Absolutely...

It all boils down to what would happen to YOU.

If you signed a contract last year, some company would hold you to it,, and tell you piss off if you didnt like it.

But this is different.

Same as why everyone wants to see the Epstein list. They could give two ***** about the victims or Epstein being dead or who he worked for.

But we sure as **** know that if there was a list for us poor folk. That would be public information and evidence. And heads would roll.

Pisses us off that our captain is acting like a Dallas Cowboy.

You have some odd examples, but hey, I suppose it works, or not…

One thing you’re right about, is this is different.

If I signed a contract last year at my job, I would be held to it. But so would my employer.
NFL contracts simply are not the same. Neither players nor organizations abide by them. Teams can trade you, cut you, or hold you hostage.

I’ll always be a supporter of the players, but I absolutely love the debate and hearing both sides.
But the “your job….” Argument is a lazy one.

Then don't be a football player, they know going in that teams can trade, cut, hold you hostage, etc, that's part of making millions and millions of dollars
Again, how many players have signed a multi year extension then turned around a year later and held out?

No, pick a side. You either want everyone to stick to contracts or you don’t. You can’t pick and choose, that’s not how contracts work either.

Heyward got his 2024 money turned into a signing bonus to guarantee it. The next 2 years of said extension included a salary of like 1.5 million.
That’s quite literally a restructuring that just looks different. It almost looks like the Steelers version of void years to me since they don’t use those the way other teams do.

On top of that he even said himself that he told the team he was coming back to the table for more money if he had an all pro season which he did. If the team wasn’t ok with that, they wouldn’t have signed off either.

This to me sounds like the team expected it, can expected it, and my original point - fans are the only ones surprised and blowing this up.

But he signed a contract he had both full knowledge of and tge way the team does business. If you go down this road its endless. There are guys on UFAs that are important players. They dont make Cam's game cheque. They will all line up if you give in. And you are not paying for what you got. It's what you think you can get.

I actually think this opens up another conversation which is guaranteed contracts. All other sports do full guarantees, which I believe is coming for the nfl very soon.

So get the angry posts ready for that.

Because he is a "Hold-In" does not mean he isn't a distraction.

By bringing these other two players to his pod-cast, he is (whether intentional or not) putting a divide3 in the locker room.

If this persists, I see a trade coming. You can't start a season with a player bringing divide into the team.

Cam or no Cam, that is coming sooner than we think.

Salute the nation
Screw trading Cam, I would just suspend him for max allowed time and wait to see if his attitude changes. If not suspend him again after a week or two. Trading him means he gets what he wants.

Players know going into the NFL how these things work, if they don't like it, go get a 9 to 5 job.

He signed the contract, if he really thought he was going to have an all-pro year, he could've said I'll play out my deal and see what happens, or put some incentives in the contract, Rodgers has incentives in his deal. He took what he could get because he was 35 just in case he was over the hill.

Maybe like someone said its all a ploy to skip camp and maybe get some money out of it.

Whos side is the guy cam walks off the field with after every game on?

And teams know how it works too. Stop living in the past, players asking for contracts before their current deal is up is just part of the league now.

Steelers typically don’t do incentives. It’s not common.

And if you really think he “took what he could get,” then we are just on different wavelengths here and there’s no point of a conversation.
Nobody’s signing him to a 4 year extension at 35, but to think another team wouldn’t sign him to this or more is just naive.

So Cam, who has been here since 2010 can't get incentives but they'll give Rodgers incentives?
Again how many players hold out 1 year after signing a new deal? How often does that happen? Have examples? Yeah players ask for new deals with 1 year on their deal is normal, who has done this 1 year after signing a new deal?

Come on man, don’t do that.

I very clearly said it’s not common, not that it can’t happen. Sure, they could’ve, but they didn’t.

I just told you how this contract was a 1 year deal in my eyes, and some others as well. I absolutely get why people are upset about the 1 year later thing, but it was literally not a clear cut new contract extension. We’re dancing around the same response at this point.

He signed the contract, if he didn't like it, don't sign it then, but he did.
Don't ***** about other players sitting out, then turn around and do the same thing.
Don't talk about playing for a division rival because things aren't going your way.

If we made a poll I'd really like to see how many agree with your point of view.

Oh I’m sure I’m in the deep minority here, I’m talking more outside of this group.

I realized a long time ago that we have a lot of “get off my lawn and oh by the way, go back to the old days,” people here.

I’ll disappear for my yearly season break from the constant complaining soon enough.

I dont think anger can come of that. Honestly the only resolution to this is to open up his snd Bos contracts to insentives. You cannot guarentee more money. It will be endless parade after that. But that could be a possibility. You play top 10. You will be compensated as such.
