Butler is the new Steelers DC !!!

Stupid not to at least outside the organization, expect more of the same old with Tomlin stupidly getting more involved.

You do realize the D got a lot better once Tomlin "stupidly" got more involved?
Also with Troy and Ike on the sidelines, sad as that is to say.

Time to move on.
The league has adjusted to the zone blitz, and you can't cover WRs in this league anyway, so time for a mix-up on D I say.
The switch to a 4-3 is probably imminent. We seem to rush 4 anyways when we don't blitz, it's about time the 4th guy isn't a LB anymore... OL are too big, we need a couple fast/good tackling LBs who can cover, but we need more consistent pressure from the front 4. It happened a bit after we mixed up the D a little bit, but it's not by design, yet.

PEACE

Totally agree Bleeds, nice to read a post which isn't based on the overriding premise Tomlin is the anti-Christ. I welcome and look forward to Tomlin having more input on Defense. This is the beginning of a new chapter, it will be tough to turn the page on the likes of the Beard, Troy, Harrison and even Ike Taylor, but 'tis is time. I think Tomlin and Butler together will be able to tweak the hybrid D into something that is more competitive in this day and age. I'm looking forward to a big turnaround on defense for next season, and already getting antsy to see who some of the new players will be....FA and draft.

A lot better? In the second half of the year, we were shredded by Zach Mettenberger, Matt Ryan (without Julio Jones), and gave up a 114 rating to Joe Flacco in Pittsburgh. Not to mention the struggling Saints.

That's a pretty quick hire to have been caught completely off guard by Dick's resignation.

Well, that's because it's been the plan for years. But doesn't this break the spirit of the "Rooney Rule?" They aren't even going to interview a black coach? I know that is for head coaches, but if black dudes don't even get interviewed for coordinator jobs, how are they ever to get head coaching gigs? They can't. The Rooneys are breaking the spirit of their own rule.

Also, how has our LB play been lately? Not very good, if you ask me. Our two first round picks have done virtually nothing. Out $9 mill man had a few sacks all year. Timmons is the only LB who was above average.

Tomlin was involved from the beginning this season when we sucked too, and last season.

I thought Tomlin said he wanted to go in a new direction, exactly what direction does this point. For as quick as Dick was gone why didn't the Steelers look for someone not connected so much to Dick.

really hard to tell whats going on behind the scenes...

I am sure Tomlin realizes his tenure as a coach depends success of his players /coordinators.

I know the owners want more than what the end result of the last 4 to 5 years......

If I was them my patience would be starting to wear.

Dick's departure might have played into that................

They have a black coach I think they lived up to the spirit of the rule.

i would have gone with schwarzer but i understand the promise to butler

The Rooney Rule only applies to head coaches. There are a lot of black coordinators.

And five years ago with the same coaches it was awesome. Players retired, moved on, or ate themselves out of a job and Tombert replaced them with vastly inferior talent. Can't make chicken salad out of chicken ****.

"Meet the new boss, same as the old boss."

Please tell me how this'll make our defense different next season?

He must have a mind of his own I guess

We'll see. There could be things that he wants to do differently that DLB didn't. I still think the talent level on D mostly stinks and he'll be lucky to be ranked 18th again, barring some magical draft picks and FA signings.

" I think you have to be able to fit your defense around the players you have."

is he hinting this wasn't being done?

How about just some progression from the guys already on the team? Tuitt being the main one. Shazier is another. Spence was basically a rookie also. I like Blake and McClain. Mitchell will be in his second year in the system. Big year for Jones upcoming. He has to play big.

I think he only means you can't live or die with the 3-4

Blake and McClain

both UFAs and I also would like to have both back...........

I agree plus McCullers could get better and play more but I think we've seen all we will see from Jones and someone will probably overpay Worilds and he'll be gone along with Ike and Troy, so there will be a lot of holes to fill on defense.

They did. But if the real end goal is to increase black coaching candidates, the rule should also apply to interviewing black coaches for coord. gigs, as everyone has to have a stint at coord. before they will have a shot at head coach. So, in order to really increase black coaches chances at getting a head coaching gig, you should mandate interviewing blacks for O and D coord. jobs as well. If not, you aren't doing enough to perpetuate blacks getting head coach gigs. If they hire a black DC, and he is successful, he will have a good shot at landing a head coach spot.

We might get worse before we get better. But, as Dallas has shown us, sometimes your D can get better even when it seemingly loses talent, by getting a younger DC in there. Dallas had a historically horrid D last year, lost some of it's best players (Ware and some others) but dramatically improved their D any how. It could happen to us. Personally, I don't consider losing Ike or Troy a bad thing, as a matter of fact. their replacements will be upgrades. Ike was playing like the worst CB in the NFL and every time Troy was on the field we got worse.

the guy waited years for the spot, the Steelers and him had a hand shake agreement since along time ago. Your post seems to try to stir some **** and nothing more

Argument goes both ways, with truth on both sides. A DC who connects with his players and simplifies things so they can play without having to think too much can get the same group of players to play much better. I am really hoping Butler doesn't need to feed his ego instead of feeding his family. Dick was far past the point where he could not let ego demands impact him. That is why he ran such a complicated system: to prove what a genius he must be. So we ended up with a program that made young guys worthless, and that is a losing model in the modern day. I really think this is part of why DL is gone: He was being pressured to use young guys earlier and he hated it. You have to be on the "I love Dick and worship him" ship before you get to play.

I personally think it should be the best person for the job. They could have interviewed 6 minorities and it still was clear who they wanted for the job. Why waste everyone's time for a coordinator position when the choice was made up already?

I don't know if Jones can play big unless he takes some "supplements." We will see if he does. He is too weak and slow as he is right now.

I have a valid point. If you want to really increase black head coaches in the NFL, you must ensure they are getting coord. gigs as well. It's not that complicated to grasp.
