We could lose kiesel, troy, taylor, harrison, and worilds. You can argue that they were not productive, but they are were starters at some point. Also we have no depth.
I did not think i was being overly negative. The d is what it is. Safety / OLB / CB is a mess currently. The only way i see to fix it quickly is add couple higher tier FAs, hit on draft picks, and hope jarvis somehow becomes productive. It is certainly no easy task for any coach
Listen to interviews with the coaches and you will hear it. They give their say but it is up to Tomlin and Colbert to make the picks. Even on game day, they don't always get the players active that they want. Both coordinators have said this numerous times. Makes no sense to me but that is what they always say.
If Tombert doesn't get him some better players (i.e. learn the difference between a good defensive player and a hole in the ground) the D won't be any better than 18th next year either.

Tomlin himself has said he has final say, Bruce Davis was handpicked by Tomlin, Tomlin said it himself.
Harrison was our best OLB, Keisel as a back up over Thomas should be a no brainer.
As for drafting 4-3 guys, maybe/maybe not, but how about we just draft guys that can play?

I understand them hiring butler but I'm not hopeful of improvement. Our back seven suks on pass coverage and we have no pass rush... How's he going to fix something an expert and hall of famer like lebeau couldn't fix.

I would like to see Butler design a scheme to fit the personnel heading into the 2015 season. Perhaps they feel that a 4-3 would be better with Jones/shazier/Timmons at backer (Speed) and we see true DT's drafted like McCullers last year to be the big Nasties in the trenches. It is kind of exciting to see what Coach Butler is going to do and what the defense is going to look like in the years ahead.
I'm just hoping Butler can polish this turd of a defense.

No one has said otherwise (i don't think). I just highly doubt they take someone that DL has said "I can't work with that", other than on a rare occasion. That doesn't have to mean that the guy they choose would have been DL's first choice.

Steelers name Keith Butler as DC
The Pittsburgh Steelers promoted Keith Butler to defensive coordinator Tuesday, announcing that the longtime assistant coach has agreed to a three-year deal.
"We are excited to announce Keith Butler as our defensive coordinator," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said in a statement released by the team. "Keith has been an integral part of our defensive game planning and schemes for several years and we look forward to him moving into the role of calling the defense. His passion and energy will be important to us taking the next steps to being one of the top defenses in the NFL."

Why was worilds dropping so much in coverage? That there was a common mistake on the scheming, the guy isn't good in open space, just send him blitzing and use the safety and ILBs for coverage duties.
every olb we've had did this, just with Worilds it's more noticable because he whines about it on social media, Woodley was a much better pass rusher than worilds and woodley dropped into coverage alot too, but he made more plays rushing the passer so it appeared he rushed the passer more.

Yeah this was one of my biggest gripes. We take our best pass rushers and drop them into coverage while blitzing troy who gets stuffed 99% of the time. LBs have to cover occasionally, but seemed to happen too often with us

Well that's like pounding the ball with dry archer just because every other rb we had did. If the guy completely sucks at coverage but is decent at rushing the qb you have two choices:
- send him blitzing most of the time and cover him with a safety or an ILB if it is zone.
- bench the ****** for anyone at least decent in all facets of the game.
You have to scheme around your weakness or you are toast

Q. What’s your reaction to being named the Steelers defensive coordinator?
A. It’s the thrill of a lifetime for me. This is a dream come true for me, and it would be for a lot of people. I’m just grateful for the opportunity.
Q. You had opportunities to leave the Steelers for better jobs during your time here. Why did you stay?
A. It’s more important to me to win Super Bowls, and I think this organization gives us the best chance to win Super Bowls. The Rooneys have always been solid, they’ve always been stay-the-course people. They never do anything based on a knee-jerk reaction, and I just admired the stability of the organization and the continuity of the organization. I wanted to be a part of that.
Q. You were hired here as the linebackers coach in 2003, and in 2004 Dick LeBeau came back for his second stint as the Steelers defensive coordinator. What was it like working with Dick?
A. Great man. Great defensive mind. Always tried to do what was right by the players on the field. Loved the players. Loved what he did. It was a great opportunity to learn from him.
Q. Who is the Dick LeBeau you knew as a person?
A. A very, very competitive man. A very competitive man. I played a lot of golf with this guy. A ton of golf, and he would get mad when I wouldn’t concede him putts. So we had some good times, some great times. I was his roommate for about 7 years at training camp, and he was just a great guy to be around. I enjoyed my time around him.
Q. Did you ever beat him at golf?
A. Probably out of the 10 years we were together, I maybe beat him at golf four times. Maybe four. And that’s like 800 times him beating me. I got lucky a couple of times.
Q. Do you have a coaching philosophy?
A. It’s not much different than most people’s philosophy would be. We definitely have to stop the run, we have to make offenses one-dimensional if we can, and we have to put pressure on the quarterback. If we can do those things, then we can help the offense. We have to get the ball back for the offense – that’s our main goal.
Q. Are you a 3-4 guy?
A. I would consider myself a whatever-it-takes-to-win guy. If it’s a 3-4, that’s fine, if that fits your players. I think you have to be able to fit your defense around the players you have. With what offenses are doing nowadays in the National Football League, they’re playing a lot of three wide receivers and a tight end and a running back, for the most part. In those situations, we’re going to be in kind of a 4-3 anyway, but we’re still going to be able to run the 3-4 also. It gives you a little bit more versatility, I think.
Q. So your feelings for the 3-4 are based more on what offenses around the league are doing now. Is that correct?
A. Yes. I also think there’s still a place for the 3-4, and the reason I think there’s still a place for it is because you also have to be versatile as a defense as offenses are trying to be versatile. So we don’t want to blow it up and say we won’t run the 3-4 anymore. We will run the 3-4, but we will run some 4-3 also, in our sub-package.
Q. Next year when the Steelers defense is playing well, what will we be seeing in terms of a style of play?
A. Hopefully we’re going to be seeing some guys really running to the football and hustling. There’s nothing that pleases me more than to see the guys surrounding the ball, and gang-tackling, and playing what I call team defense, and relying on each other to be where they’re supposed to be when they’re supposed to be there.
Q. In your mind, is it the scheme or the players?
A. It’s always the players. It always is the players. I’ve never seen a good coach without good players. In that case, you need to be able to teach guys to do what you expect them to do, and they have to have a clear understanding so they don’t have to think about it too much. They can react a little more quickly, so we can appear to be faster on the field.
Q. Is it the pressure or the coverage?
A. Both. It’s both. You have to have both to have the number of interceptions you want. You’ve got to be able to make the quarterback nervous. He can’t always be able to do what he wants to do, and so you have to make him move around a little bit. At the same time you have to have good coverage.
Q. Is it at least true that everything has to start with pressure?
A. I think it does. Everybody says the best pass defense is pressure on the quarterback, and that’s probably true. If the quarterback can’t get the ball off, your pass defense is going to be pretty good. You want to put pressure on the quarterback, but you still have to have those athletes along the back end who can cover.
Q. What does this defense have going in its favor moving forward?
A. I think it’s the way we finished the season – we won four games at the end of the season that we needed to win – and I think what we did a good job of was that we relied on each other to be where we’re supposed to be when we’re supposed to be there. It was a team defense.
Q. What about an area where it might have to improve?
A. I’m going to leave that up to the head coach and the scouting department to handle that. You have guys who play on defense and they leave it all out there for you, and I really don’t want to be critical of any of them right now. I’d rather do that in private, not in public.

He rushed the qb a lot more than he dropped into coverage, every team in the NFL does this, Suggs doesn't rush every time, Dumervill doesn't rush the qb every play, I've seen Ngata drop into coverage before. If Worlds doesnt like it or can't handle it then cya. It's not like every time he drops into coverage, that was the plan. If a TE goes in motion from the other side, or a RB shifts out to the slot, then there's a chance Worilds has responsibility there. That's part of having 4 Lbs.

It's not likely we switch to a 4-3 in 2015. The biggest problem with current roster is the one position we have a surplus of
players is the one that gets eliminated. What would you do with Spence, Williams, Shazier? Not sure if Williams could
move outside, but one of those guys could get traded if we could get a decent draft pick return.

I thought Tomlin said he wanted to go in a new direction, exactly what direction does this point. For as quick as Dick was gone why didn't the Steelers look for someone not connected so much to Dick.
