Butler is the new Steelers DC !!!

That's a pretty quick hire to have been caught completely off guard by Dick's resignation.

You mean pretty obvious one right?

6 yds off cushion should be a huge improvment if we can trim DL's 9 yd cushions down to 6 and once we get better CB's and if Cortez starts next year well let him play press or man man

I swear this was announced 48 hours ago with LeBeaus resignation.

The ONLY person claiming the Steelers organization was caught off guard is that ***-clown Rappaport. Butler's contract was up: Rooney's knew it, Labeau knew it, its just time to give the man his shot whether its here or somewhere else. Now we know it here!

Literally the only person. Anything that he reports on the Steelers I ignore. Say what you want about the local guys, but they get the stories and they get them right.

Unlikely a 78 year-old quits to look for another job and couldn't the Steelers block him from doing so? How is that caught off guard?

Look, the guy stuck around when he clearly didn't have to... if they felt he was next in line they kind of had to move fast or lose him.

.....also according to the chat from the "Evil" paper today those hoping for a switch to the 4-3 best not hold their breath either... and one other point, a couple weeks ago I went through and found threads and articles from various fan blogs and messageboards criticizing almost every team's D for "10 yard cushions on third downs" so I wouldn't hold my breath on that going away either, since we as a fanbase ignore every formation that doesn't have that and only gripe when we are in it and someone catches a pass and seem to think every other team runs press man coverage every play....

Almost as quick as when they run up to the podium on draft day. But that being said....we are all about loyalty,he has earned his chance. This is what makes us the Steelers. Welcome aboard as our new DC Mr Butler!

I think Lebeau agreed with this.
**** isnt get fixed until we start drafting better players. The thing that worries me about Jones is that no matter how difficult everyone says Lebeaus defense was, when you're a pass rusher and your told the rush the passer you should be able to do it, Jones hasn't done anything when rushing the passer.

Sure beat me to it. I, too, disagree that Jarvis is a complete bust - yet.

Now to the new news...

I pray that Coach Butler has learned (some say "learnt") ONE THING - NO CROSS BLITZES on third down PLEASE!!!!!!!

Cmon the man waited years for this position..they were never going to interview anyone else. Maybe and i hate to speculate maybe the Steelers asked Lebeau to stay on but take a lesser role so they can promote Butler. He said no. From reports the split was amicable. No hard feelings on either side.

The student takes over from the teacher. How are things going to be much different?

Butler is set up to fail. We will likely lose almost half the D, and most of the ones left are not very good. The expectations can not be too high, but i hope Butler is better at maximizing talent. I wonder if the organization will have him on a short leash? If the D doesn't start to turn around in 2 years i wonder if they will axe him...

Lets not think too far ahead. Lets just give the guy time to run this machine and figure out if it's the driver, the mechanic, or some parts need to be swapped out to get the machine running as it should.

Why would we lose half the D? Butler has been here for a very long time as well, the players know him. The only ones we're likely to lose are ones either not on contract anymore, and Troy (who was considering retirement anyway).

Hopefully, Butler is taking the job with the commitment from Tomlin and Colbert to re-tool the defense with draft picks and FAs. I'm sure he has a vision and will need the horses to make it succeed. Ike and Troy most likely will be gone. Worlids, Harrison, Keisel, Will Allen and McCain are still question marks to return. Regardless, they need capable bodies. More question marks are Jarvis Jones, Shazier, Cam Thomas, Mitchell, Shamarko Thomas and Cortez Allen. He has his work cut out.

If he can take the best from LeBeau and add his own nuances and schemes to that, it will be good to see. I guess we all knew it would be Butler. Let's just hope they actually give him a true say in who is drafted. It didn't seem like LeBeau had much say in the draft.

Wow, hard to get more negative than that unless ya throw in a bus crash or two.

Based on what???? Dick wasnt golfing on draft day.

He's in his 70's, he was napping. Dude had 50+ years in the NFL and they didn't consult him on picks. Didn't you know that?

When a son takes over his dads business, do things always remain the same...? No they dont...innovation, and creativity are the lifeblood of success...not adapting is the recipe for failure....just ask Blockbuster.

As a fan I am pretty sure from what our ownership has showed me they will give him a very good chance. As we know the Steelers are a very loyal group and Butler has been very loyal to them he has passed on a few jobs just to stay here and take over. With that said he does have his work cut out for him with a lot of holes but that could be a good thing, addition by subtraction. No disrespect to Troy and Ike but at this stage in their careers them not coming back is a plus. Sad but exciting times for us...........
