Brown calls Ryan Clark an Uncle Tom

Everything you need to know about what happens when they trade when... basically there is 21M of cap hit to eat if he's traded. Trade before June 1 and it all hits in 2019. Trade after June 1 and that is split over 2019 and 2020.

I still don't quite get this. 12+million of his cap hit is his salary. 4 million is a roster bonus due March 18th. If he's traded the salary goes with him and the roster bonus doesn't have to be paid. Why is there still a 21 million cap hit?

I think it has something to do with the restructuring he's done to push salary to bonus money.

No one is giving a top 5 pick for a guy who is 30 and causing this kind of trouble. I'm sorry, I heard this bullshit speculation with Bell.

I guess maybe his final 3 years of pro-rated bonus money is accelerated to this season maybe. Where the hell is TMC?????

Yes. All the pro-rated bonus from the rest of the contract counts as a cap hit in 2019 if he's traded before June. It is divided between 2019 and 2020 if traded after 1 June.

While they save the salary, they have to eat the cap hit from the rest of the bonus. Saves the team real dollars (salary), but accelerates the cap hit of the bonus which under normal circumstances is divided out over the length of the deal.

Finally...thanks Va.....
The peanut gallery applauds you. That explains it in layman's terms but I am sure that the lawyers can make adjustments and considerations to any possible scenario. It will be interesting to see how they work this out but I'm not sure that Tombert will get rid of him for any reason, AR2 will have to pull his ticket.

well no matter what, I'm not sure how they can keep him now. I mean the guys ego isn't going to allow himself to show up and give some sort of heart felt apology to the team. He's on social media getting giddy with other teams, mocking his head coach with another former player, but won't communicate with Tomlin or the Rooneys.

I know a secret down at Uncle Tom's cabin

I will say this. If anyone wants to trade a top 5 pick for AB 21 million or not, the ink could not dry fast enough for me on that deal. Dump Dupree, Gilbert to get under the cap. 2 top 20 picks. Get a playmaker on offense or two studs on defense. Hell I will throw in Tomlin and a bag of used Jock straps on that deal.

Haha. That old time **** was so greasy and violent. Like a bed time story for a kid where someone is getting put in an oven by a witch. Nice.
But AB better watch it cause Uncle Ryan knows where all the bodies are buried.

Three 1st round picks.

That's not realistic thinking. If we could get one high 1st round pick we would be fortunate and should take it. If we got a 1st and a 3rd-4th then we are more than fortunate and should take it. This guy is 30 so he is past his prime, his best years are in the rear view mirror already. Add in the public drama and you've now eliminated over half the league as potential trading partners. There are teams who just won't want his personality (for good reason). Yes, there are always teams like the Raiders, Patriots, Bengals, etc who will take anyone's castoffs and either regret it (Raiders & Bengals) or turn them into serviceable players to win now with (Patriots).

The only thing that makes a trade for worthwhile assets a possibility is the fact that the trading team would get him at below market value on their books. The team that trades for him is not responsible for paying any portion of the signing bonus, they only take on the salary portion of the contract. That makes him a bargain on their books financially. If they think they can manage his ego then it makes sense financially to the trading team. It's still a tough pill to swallow on Pittsburgh's finances with that massive cap penalty.

Hey, careful with that "old time ****". I heard that song live in concert and I'm not ready to admit I'm old!!!

The thing that surprises me the most about this thread is that Coach had to look up the meaning of an Uncle Tom...

Bouchette is wrong, unless moving Brown involves him paying back some of his signing bonus to get a trade. $21M is in stone, but there are instances where a player has paid back part of a signing bonus, and that reduces the cap. If Brown is going to get a brand new contract, possibly in the $100M range, he could conceivably give the Steelers $20M if he's getting over $40M in guarantees. He's still making out, gets a higher salary, and the Steelers are out of cap hell. The problem with moving him though, is value. He's not a 1 first round draft pick trade. AB is a GOAT. It's like trading Rice in his prime. What team wouldn't give everything to get a Rice in his prime? This can possibly be played like the Hershel Walker trade. Walker was a HOFer, and a GOAT at the time for RBs, Dallas parlayed that trade into 3 superbows. Minimum that I would take for AB is 3 1sts. 1 first for a pro bowler, 2 firsts for a franchise player, 3 firsts for a HOFer/GOAT. That is intelligent market value for AB.

And some of your numbers you're throwing around are off. The bonus is $2.5M not $4.

Nobody is giving up (3) First Round Draft picks for a 30 year old receiver with disciplinary issues that quit on his team. Everyone knows that the Steelers need to get rid of Brown, so we definitely don't hold the cards on the trade. Plus, you still need to be cognizant of what the precedence is when you become a disgruntled employee, if you are enough of a distraction, you will get your way, get to go to a new team, and get your money.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've heard the Steelers are projected to be about $20 million under the cap so if they take the huge hit of Brown against the cap and then add back in the savings of his salary, Pittsburgh would be around $21 million of cap space. If the Steelers can find someone that would give them a player and their top 5 to ten pick and the player is someone who can contribute, I think losing Brown could put the Steelers into a better position. They would just have to add him to the players they would have to replace with the cap space of $21 million. Then, the Steelers would have an additional $20 million to play with next year.

Brown should not be a Steeler next year.

No doubt Steeler Capologists dahn Heinz will be working out the numbers on their state of the art servers

One pick would not be the same value. You're trading a GOAT for a kid (see what I did there?)

It's why the best players at their positions rarely move. Their team doesn't want to lose them, or they lose who they are. Steelers are not a top 3 O without AB. He is that good. They don't lead the league in red zone scoring without his league leading 15TD receptions.

You are describing a trade for a pro bowler, not for the best in his position who is on pace to challenge the best ever at his position. And if you're eating $21M in dead cap, there is no value in it.

I wonder if the NFL will fine Brown for his remarks. I actually hope they do. One thing is certain, Tomlin can not discipline him.

I kind of disagree. If this spins out of control, a bidding war can ensue. While we do not have the "cards" we have AB.

You WANT AB, you will pay.....If not I will get on the phone with the next Joker GM. These fools will be drooling.AB is super valuable

Come on people....HE IS NOT PAST HIS PRIME....What games are you watching?

Get me Jerry Jones on the phone now....

Will be interesting to see who would take him after watching this fiasco unfold. Would be wild if he were to be released and nobody picks him up like Kaepernick. Not sure if the owners have enough solidarity for that or not but if this reckless behavior is rewarded, it will become standard practice and will hurt the league in the long run.

Difference is Kaepernick sucks and AB is at the top of his game. No way teams wouldn't jump all over a chance to sign AB.
