Are we allowed to discuss Tomlin yet . . . .

No, I said I liked what I heard and trusted the Rooneys. Belichick didn't exactly light it up as head coach in Cleveland, so stats don't always tell the story, especially when Tomlin only spent one year at MInn. Anyway, I've been consistent about my opinion of Tomlin over the last few years. You won't get any argument from me. You were right if you really felt that way back then based on one year at Minn.

Checked the record. Sure, in one year at Minn his defense was last in pass defense, but 8th overall. When he was D backs coach at Tampa before that, they led the league in total defense and won a Super Bowl. Decent creds. Still, Tomlin sucks.

I understand.

But if you're relying on total defense stats when he was a DB coach, liking what you heard was kind of a reach.

To me, finishing 8th overall while finishing last against the pass (his supposed area of expertise) wasn't a good thing...rather, it exhibited a concerning lack of balance.

Of course, now, the Steelers can't stop the run or the pass.

I remember I liked his run D, but the pass D of the Vikings was a concern.

But with a young unproven. I think most simply didn't know.

I don't think Tommy Tom was Steelersnation's first choice thinking back.(for most fans)

And I don't blame posters for hoping Tomlin would work out.You have to hope for the best, until proven that it isn't for the best.

And now I feel like it has been proven it isn't for the best.

That Vikings defense was great against the run due to Kevin and Pat Williams being in the middle of it.

In fairness to Tomlin, however, that defense gave up a lot of passing yards because teams did not even bother to establish the run against it

It was basically average/middle of the pack in terms of yards per pass play.

The Pens fired Bylsma and brought in Sullivan. Contrasting styles and they immediately win two straight Cups. A disciplined, strategy-driven coach would do wonders for this team. The talent is there to make another run, but not with the current leadership.

I agree, largely, with your post, except for the last part. I’m January, we were in a very similar situation, and Tomlin elected to go for the onside kick. To nobody’s surprise, it was unsuccessful, as onside kicks rarely are. Not sticking up for him, but this is a perfect example of “when it works/doesn’t work, the coach is a ...........”

I was wishy washy on the onside kick decision. The part that made my decision is when the announcers mentioned the new rules about kicking where the kicking team cannot start running until the ball is kicked (or whatever the exact rule is). That ought to make the onside kick much harder to recover for the kicking team.

I did not like the decision to punt on 4th down, although, I did expect a punt from Berry which gave some chance of downing it instead of booting it way out of the EZ.

Game 1, Hunter was targeted 5 times with one completion. In game 2, Washington was targeted 5 times with 1 completion. I have no idea why they didn't use Washington instead of Hunter. It could be any number of reasons about which we know nothing.

When Tomlin was hired I thought he was a good hire. He acted and sounded like a good coach. The first year I gave him a pass because he was a rookie coach. Second year we won the Super Bowl, but I was still not impressed with his actual coaching abilities. It has basically gone downhill for me since then. Just the same things year after year. We have under achieved given our talent level.

Agreed. Not much coaching abilities. Each year we regress. He took over a super bowl winning roster with a franchise qb. As the roster dwindles it shows more and more. Once Ben is gone it will really go south. The.difference is we used to laugh at teams like the bengals for taking low character guys. We as an organization only took good character players. Not the lagarret blounts, martavius Bryant's and mike Vicks. We had a standard as an organization of excellence and now we have no accountability only tomlinisms and excuses.

We helped create these guys. Whether he was part of the problem or exaggerated his story, James Harrison hinted at it. AB does what he wants. Bell showed up late to meetings. The defensive staff has the players believing the scheme will work, they just fail to communicate. Bud Dupree, who's done nothing, is running his mouth on Twitter to fans. Joey Porter can do what he wants with no ramifications. Love it or hate it, Ben is always stirring up something on his radio show.

Can you imagine what TJ Watt thinks, a guy who live and breaths football, when he steps into that locker room. Ramon Foster who is on the backside of his career trying to win a title and he's got all of this going on around him. It's something else.

Wait just one minute. Dupree the flailing stork to coin a phrase had the most qb hurries week 1.

I will be in the stadium for the Tampa game. If we lose to the Succaneers then we can write off the season.

I remember the Harrison debacle began with Porter, not Shades, Porter announcing we were moving on at OLB. That we had 2 young guys ready to step up. Who the fk was Porter to make such a public announcement? Shouldn't Mike T make a call like that? If I were Harrison, I'da been pissed too.

Something about Shades/Porter friendship really smells.

Was gonna drive down but the value has nose dived for me.

It took me awhile to jump aboard the "**** Bell" train, but I did.
It's taken me awhile to jump aboard the"**** tomlin" train, but here I am.
This cluster **** of a defense, cluster **** special teams, cluster **** locker room, cluster ******!!
If there is one thing a ****** coach should be able to handle, it's the locker room. Tomlin can't even keep that together. I know Art isn't a knee jerk guy so I guess it will take 5 more years of this **** before anything changes.
What a waste.

Any fans of the Candy man song? Just cue the music, and tolerate average lyrics if you can....

Who can take a season full of promise? Sour all the joy. ( Chorus sings sour all the joy ) Mix in some lousy game decisions that will surely annoy. Its another loss with 42 points against oh boy. The Tomlin man can. Oh, Tomlin man can.

Who can hire coordinators? Turn them into goats! ( Chorus repeats turn them into goats ) Have them exit Pittsburgh on a sour note. The Tomlin man can. The Tomlin man can 'casue he'll fire those he hired to make himself look good.

Oh, watch him argue. Hem and haw. ( Chorus sings Hem and Haw ) Get busted for stepping on the game field & it's just another flaw. The Tomlin man can. Oh, the Tomlin man can.

Who's has a team full of divas? ( Chorus repeats full of divas ) That don't respect him at all! He'll take away the locker room games. And threaten to unleash hell. Like broken record it won't go well. The Tomlin man can, oh the Tomlin man can.

Let's talk about clock management. Or the lack of making coaching adjustments on the fly. ( Chorus sings lack of adjustments on the fly ) Lose to teams with bad records like stinky lemon pie. The Tomlin man can, Oh the Tomlin man can. The Tomlin man can. Because he'll make changes without any change at all.

Who's 3-6 in his last nine playoff games? ( Who's 3-6 in his last nine playoff games ) And nearly impossible to fire? ( Chorus nearly impossible to fire ) Make the fans bleed black and gold, he's like a vampire. The Tomlin man can. Oh, the Tomlin man can.

Remember the last super bowl win? With Bill Cowher's players an all. ( Chorus repeats with Bill Cowher's players and all ) That was in 2009. Ten years later sunglass like Darth Vader still in charge. The Tomlin man. Oh, the Tomlin man.

If we have a losing season. After going 13-3 ( Chorus sings 13-3 ), Maybe Mr. Rooney will grow a pair and let the fans shout with glee. Then the sun will rise. I see another Lombardi in my dreams. It can happen with some action, make addition with subtraction pretty please. Yes Art Rooney can. Yes Art Rooney can.

Coach, you crazy *******! Only you would come up and ruin a classic Sammy Davis tune.

Well, I’m trying to stay positive but we cannot lose this game. I don’t believe in this Fitzmagic bullshit and it’s time we start playing as a team and show some urgency and kick their *****.

I actually have a good feeling about it and think we’ll come out of there with the win.

The key to beating Fitz is getting pressure to him early. He get really happy feet and stops looking down the field and looks for the rush. So long as we run Tomlin's 2DL formation, ANY QB will have all day to sit back and rip us apart. Any QB that is given 5-6 seconds WILL find an open receiver.

No, he was not. His qualifications at best were sparse and lacked any real proven success.

Prior year with Vikes his only as a defensive coordinator that defense ranked near the bottom. He blew the Rooney’s away with his smooth talking and the fact he was a minority candidate made the hiring even more attractive to the Rooneys,

This was such an important time for the Rooneys to succeed Cowher with a young, innovative, strong personality type coach. One that would have been opportunistic enough to realize what he had and to build on that existing team. Tomlin was not that coach. Tomlin had two strong coordinators and a team loaded with proven veterans led by a young, talented QB. He got much more credit than he ever deserved early on which played nicely with the Rooney’s hiring a minority candidate. Now from 2011 when all those seasoned vets were pretty much gone or at their end, look at the results. Missed playoff years and early exits from the playoffs. Making one AFCC game getting blown out. Now to 2018 where it looks like the wheels may finally fall off. Who could possibly be surprised. The defense instead of progressing has been getting worse.
The sad part of all this is that this is Tomlin’s blueprint the last eight years. And his arrogance and ego continue to stand in the way of him ever improving himself and the team.
Until Rooney can see the big picture this will continue to get worse.

And any other coach outside the organization if they were worth anything would have wanted to bring in their own guys for the OC and DC positions. Again. Tomlin with his lack of experience was perfect for the job. He was basically told who his OC and DC were going to be. And to a degree he still is. Butler was promised the DC position before Tomlin arrived. Haley? Was he a Rooney hire? Maybe. The only true coordinator he has hired is our current OC.

Excellent points! New coaches almost always bring in their own guys.

Cohwer's defenses loved rookie QBs, ate them for snacks. Turned them into mistake ridden fools......... Now we just have a fool pretending to be a defensive guru.

I'm coming from Las Vegas, any chance they fix the defense before Monday? Spending a lot of money to travel across the country to support the black and gold. It's already a long flight back, an ugly loss will make it longer.

And that is what gets me. Shades first order of business when he got here was to fire / cut Cowher's guy (Peezy) to show who's boss. How are they so tight?

Despite Harriaon going to the cheating dogs i feel he was robbed of what should've been a finale for the ages. That's how my storybook ending for him was written anyway. I felt we did him dirty. That sucks big time.

Kids are near same age & play on same PeeWee football team / school team. Porter had a "bad parent" day a couple years ago and the game had to be stopped due to jaw jacking referee by Porter. Cool shades was in attendance and did nothing. This occured near the time of Joey's famous BAR incident and yet NOT one single ounce of dicipline that I have heard of or published.
