Tomlin says defensive end Tuitt could be back for Ravens
Coach Mike Tomlin said Tuitt had started a rehab program Tuesday and will have an “opportunity” to play Christmas day in a game that could clinch the AFC North championship for the Steelers.
“We'll watch him participate over the course of the week and see what he looks like,” Tomlin said Tuesday at his weekly press conference. “The position he plays gives him an opportunity that would be less likely if it was a wide receiver or corner.
“We'll give him an opportunity for him to show his overall readiness.”
Without Tuitt, the Steelers were left with only four healthy defensive linemen, three when Ricardo Mathews injured his right ankle and left the Bengals game before later returning.
Tomlin said Mathews could be limited in practice early in the week but could play vs. the Ravens.
Tight end Ladarius Green, who was placed in concussion protocol after taking a hit to the hate late in the Bengals game, was examined Tuesday at the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program.
“We will follow the protocol to the letter as we always do,” Tomlin said.
Green had a history of concussions with the San Diego, sustaining two in a two-week period last season.
“His participation will be an indication of where he's going or not going,” Tomlin said. “We'll make the necessary adjustments to include him or exclude him depending on where those winds take us.”
Running back DeAngelo Williams, who had two full practices last week but didn't play against the Bengals, sat because of swelling in his knee. Williams has missed six consecutive games because of the injury that required surgery.
“Maybe it was a cumulation of the week's work, maybe it was result of the plane flight,” Tomlin said. “We decided to exercise caution and not play him.”
Tomlin said he “fully expects” Williams to play against the Ravens. Williams hasn't played since the teams met Nov. 6 in Baltimore.
Tomlin also said he is “excited” about the possible return of wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey (foot sprain). Tomlin also noted special teams player Shamarko Thomas could return, citing a prior knee injury but not mentioning the concussion that kept Thomas sidelined the past two weeks.
