After Ben

I don't even want to think about the current Steelers without Ben. That would be a train wreck. We have him for several more years

Why can't we have a Ben predissessor? Ben's replacement cant just come in without learning as much as he can from Ben. I mean we meed a real QB like a first round. Any college QB's comimg up? I don't really know College football but getting into it. Plus I'd feel a lot better withca real QB comimg in if Ben goes down again. Not these guy's we have.

Hahahahahaahahahahahah You're asking this team to have some foresight? Hahahahahahaha

I think Mettenberger might be the new modern day Tomczak. As much as the Steelers say they may draft a replacement for Ben, I honestly don't see this happening for a few years, even after Ben. I hope we don't go through another 30 years before drafting a QB in the first round.

Stick with Mettenberger and see what he has and maybe a very late draft pick this year or an undrafted free agent. Maybe in two years if we don't seem to have that long term solution on the roster and Ben is 37 draft a QB higher to groom. But at 34/35 it's just a little too early. If Ben plays 4 more years we might have to pull an Osweiler and either break the bank on an unknown commodity (besides practice and limited games) or let someone snag him up. If you draft a guy and have him on the roster for 2 years with 2 years left on his contract you can groom him a little but still get to see what he can do before having to pony up the big bucks.

and, if you think about it, it wasn't some drafting genius that got Ben. He, literally, fell into our laps. Maybe the genius was to suck the year before and draft 11th?

I believe Cowher was hellbent to draft Javon Kearse. I remember Dan Rooney playing the rare owners card during the draft and said take Roethlisberger. He wasn't going to pass like they passed on Marino

Totally different drafts. Yes, Cowher was wanting someone else, cant remember exactly who, but the Rooneys said "Big Ben end of story". Kearse was already in the league at that point

It was Shawn Andrews OG Arkansas taken by the Eagles

Sent from my HTC6535LVW using Steeler Nation mobile app

Cowher wanted Kearse, Donawho took Edwards, Cowher wanted Andrews, Rooney's stepped in and made him take Ben.

Chuck Noll wanted Robert Newhouse, not Franco.

Yes, I think Kearse was in the same draft as Edwards. I heard rumors some wanted Kearse and I heard rumors some wanted OT Tait but in the end they took a need vs the board and drafted WR Troy Edwards.

If memory serves me right Cowher fell in love with Rivers and when he was off the board Cowher didn't want a QB. The QB coach at the time Mark Whipple went to Roethlisbergers pro day and it was horrible weather with strong winds and Ben cut the ball thru the wind like butter and he came back and said Roethlisberger could throw a ball in a wind tunnel.

I remember thinking no way Roethlisberger would fall to us even though TMC said there was a chance. He was right that time. I really thought the draft was going to be Manning, Roethlisberger, and Rivers 1, 2, 3.

I like the kid Eason from UGa. Dude has an absolute hose for an arm.
He was only a freshman. Maybe he stays two more years?

We definitely need a better backup than what we have now. Maybe Mettenberger is that guy for another year. I would definitely like us to take a look at a QB in the 2018 draft. We have much more pressing needs this offseason, like OLB.

I know this is not a popular position..and I mentioned it once before...

But the Jags will probably let Bortles walk when his contract is done..he will be an UFA in 2018..
Good timing considering Ben's end of career timing, which is probably after the 2019 season...

Believe this guy can get it done with a better support group and organization around him....and he will not be a rookie "project"...

This of course is a moot point if we unfortunately have a Top 10 pick in the next couple of years...and can possibly address the QB situation through the draft..

Be ok with him as a backup or a stop gap until you groom another. He has some things to like. But not sure he is a long term answer. I don't like how any INTs that cat is prone to throwing.....
